American Combat Engineers: You will find that you have more needs for these units than you actually have. I would make a list of them all and double check to ensure they are being used in the most important places.

Most of your large divisions will have TO&E upgrades that place significant combat engineer squads in them.

OT - we need Alfred to put out an "Allied Player Guide for Dummies - Invasions."

In my Tracker, and granted this is a stock Scen 2 game, but I see the following groups as "Upgrade to" the J2M3:

302 Ku S-1 (arrival March 2, 1944), 36
332 Ku S-1 (arrives ~09/44), 36
352 Ku S-1 (arrives ~09/44), 36
381 Ku S-1 (arrives ~09/43), size 27

So...if his units are the same, none can upgrade. Unless I fail at using Tracker, but the "Upgrade to (path)" option shows so many more units that I figure that's gotta be the PDU On version of the screen.

Thanks!

That's probably why I haven't seen them yet even though they're in production. Also probably why he pushed the A5M line so hard in RnD.

I think reading Jocke's AAR was more informative than anyone player could put together. Lots of info there from everyone.

The key is having time to do it right. I know what to bring at this point, and the amount of bombardment I want to do before landing, but I don't necessarily think it's more prudent to do that if it puts my ships, (high VP ships like BBs and high value ships like APAs) into jeopardy. I've basically made the choice to go on the cheap in Cent Pac, so the timeframe is not ideal, with only time for one or two bombardments just before the invasions.

This last one the bombardments by embedded BBs did a lot of good work, but the cruisers failed to hit the base as scheduled (I had them on a daytime bombardment and they were in hex but didn't bombard, not sure why). That could have pushed the edge a little more in our direction. I also intercepted some Mavis-L at Mili, so he may have been flying another unit in, (or something out), during the turn. I had thought there were two naval guards there but found three at landing.

As it is he could reinforce but he must know this will most likely end like Nauru, with a complete annihilation of the garrison. The Marines there will recover unless really severely bombarded, and to do that he's going to have to put high value ships in the firing line. That's fine with me!

Getting the afternoon bombardment to work is always a crap shoot.

You are doing really well in this game, but you will have to start putting more at risk and Japan is strong. Can't wait for the clash of the carriers. Where will it be and who will win?

I would vote, but I am reading both sides.

Set "Remain on Station" - they'll bombard in the afternoon. If you don't set that, the code will instead calculate how to get them to sail to the location, bombard at night, and retreat.

At some point I may, but I also haven't been forced to put more at risk on the Oceans yet. I don't even have to move through the Cent Pac area, but I'm doing it to build an understanding of what my forces can accomplish and also to see what he'll risk to stop me from going forward.

In So Pac/SW Pac the going is pretty easy at this point, and that could change whenever he decides a line has been crossed. I have experience on the other side though, and I know that even though I had even more time to set up good defenses on New Guinea and around Rabaul, I couldn't hold back the Allies in later 43.

I just want to be in shooting distance of the PI and Marianas by early 44 for my own sense of accomplishment.

May 9, 1943

Finally got a few minutes to give an update on the Mili invasion and the fighting above Paoshan.

SUBS: Two subs damaged and one confirmed sunk (with Glens on ground losses list). Our got a chance at a CA but couldn't hit with 4 fish.

INDIA: I've started flying out Chinese units that could have HQ changed. Just realized this was a possibility, so I can get one big Corps plus some smaller units and two HQs out this way.

CHINA: The congestion at Paoshan is diminishing as troops leave and some begin to walk into the wilds to starve. I'd like to get out two of the Brit base forces other than the vehicles and AA guns and fly in a Marine MAG to run the CAP. Then hat will give me some room to use to get two Indian brigades with 43 squads in the place. I just need some time!

SO PAC: Building up Buna.

CENT PAC: Mili holds on but many of the guns for the fort and units look to be destroyed. The AA seems lessened as well. Now it's a waiting game until the Marines recover. I'll see also if his CA TF pursues our invasion fleet, which is reorganized into combat groups, the BBs taken out of the amphib TFs and all combat ships assigned to follow one of the TFs of APA/LSI. All will race South.

SIGINT: Yes, I know this already!!

a Aoba class CA is moving to Maloelap (136,117).

Yep. I had this set and it's always worked for me including a few weeks ago in this game at Nauru. I had day recon floatplanes set and a good commander with high aggression, set to absolute threat tolerance. No idea why it didn't fire this time.

Hence my post that afternoon bombardments are a crap shoot. You can do everything right and they don't shoot. Perhaps the local commanders where worried about that heavy cruiser you spotted to the north...I dunno, but I won't rule anything out.

Can weather like "heavy rain" prevent a bombardment? If you can't see what you are shooting at ...

For the recent non-bombardment it was light cloud. I doubt weather is a factor. It's not listed above in the invasion landing bombardments CR.

I've had night bombardments not go before, but it's been because they TF never moved there... 8 hexes out, 8 hexes for a single phase of full speed movement, and yet they won't go in - instead choosing to move to within 6 hexes, which is 2 phases of cruise, before going in for the bombardment.

I've never seen a day bombardment not go before. Odd.

I can now see into Truk. I actually have been able to for a while, but didn't use the F4F-7 from Ontong Java until now, since supply is topped up there.

Not much here other than support, but the nice thing is that there is no CAP, and the turn after there was still no CAP.

Maybe later I'll be able to take a LR risk here.

Do you believe there actually is a CVE nestled in port there with the AKEs and AGs?

SUBS: A few more interactions between Allied subs and the IJN combat ships in the area, but no hits. The I-28 tries for our cruiser TF and misses. Two subs find wounded IJN DDs but can't get a hit. They did confirm 'heavy fires, heavy damage' though, so it looks bad for the little ancient DDs.

INDIA: Troops are streaming out of Tezpur toward Dimapur and Silchar. It looks like IJA forces are moving out of Silchar, but we'll probably get there while they're still in the base, which could be interesting. Forces are moving on Dacca and Comila, and once they're close I'l paradrop Chittagong. I can then move troops with motorized strat movement on major highways into the area. Dacca is key as it's another level 4 base in range of transports to Paoshan.

CENT PAC: Everything gets away clean. He did send cruisers to Mili, but they must not have had orders to pursue past that point. three old IJN DDs were caught one hex too far to the South of Mili though. The DBs from Makin launched and put two bombs on one and one 1000 pounder on each of the others. They all might go down, but they're only Momi class, so not too great a loss. I don't use these at all in a surface combat role, only as escorts.

The 4E Libs and 2E Mitchells launched and went for the cruisers at Mili, under a large LR CAP, and only scored one hit on the Kako that looks like it bounced.

CHINA: The Japanese are ratcheting up pressure in areas outside my CAP zones. On the 10th they sent 257 bombers on strike missions.

He tries a DA at Paoshan and the results are still far in the negative zone, which is great for us. He also managed to help ease the overstacking by taking out one of the small Chinese units in move mode trying to get out.

Getting some good recon in China now. So far, very interesting. Chikhiang has also been looked at and had 41 fighters, while Hankow had 120 bombers and no fighters. I'll keep looking around.

CBI

Here is a better shot of the CBI area. Paoshan has the 6th Guards Division, an experienced veteran unit late of India, sieging.

The Allied goal is to drive toward Dimapur to lock down the 65k defenders there as armor drives past on the yellow road to Ledo, which currently only has 5k defenders. Kohima has another 20k that could be railed back, but I'll theater that with a crossing as forces move on past as well. As usual the first goal is to create a trapping and encirclement of Japanese forces, but Nick is usually very quick to move out of those kinds of situations, and so then the secondary product is often a Japanese withdrawal.

I want Ledo while the fields at Chungking are still open so I can fly supply in, some free units out. I want it now.

Silchar is about to be invested along the rail to Chittagong and paras will take Chittagong in the next days. The Japanese at Silchar are moving back to Imphal, but if they're in combat mode once we arrive, we could get a shot at them moving slowly.

The one Guards Division in Paoshan will not likely be able to take the base soon without help from the air force to close the bad and then bomb everything. I've got Hellcats and Corsairs there to make sure it's hard to do that. The overstacking is slowly being remedied by gargantuan resupply efforts and withdrawal f some of the free units, both Chinese and Allied. With two more weeks this could get interesting. Nick has to act fast I think.

What will he do?

The 13th starts with a bang! I'd moved some ships up with the idea of bombarding Mili. Since his CAs appeared to be within range, but at Roi Naumur, so requiring perhaps a long dash in, I thought we might get an advantage in a battle there. I sent 5 DDs to escort the bombardment with a 2 hex react so they might get to the cruisers first and see what they could do.

What I didn't expect to find ...

... was all of this!

Two of the DDs were sunk and we only got a few hits on one DD of theirs. That is a lot of CAs!!!

Then our CAs reacted and got the surprise on the IJN. It didn't give too much of an advantage, but may have saved the TF from disaster. As it was, Salt Lake City took a pounding.

SUBS: Silversides gets a nice big TK in the sights and then ... launches just two torpedoes!

INDIA: Silchar is invested and we'll bombard tomorrow. Chittagong and Comila are taken and Dacca is a functioning airbase now. Troops will get to Dimapur in a few days.

CENT PAC: Well, it was a good effort but resulted in the loss of one CA, the Salt Lake City, and two DDs. I think maybe we scored one DD as I heard a sinking later in the turn. This should set up things for later when I might be able to lure his forces in for similar kinds of reactions if I can stay patient and disciplined. I'll wait a few days now before sending in the other CA TF from Tarawa, which is already on station there.

I do like so many ships burning so much fuel out here, and I'm sending a few subs at both the cruisers at Malolap and the tankers I can see at Roi Namur, hoping hither base is mined and taking my chances anyway.

SW PAC: Finally loading up for PM now that Buna has a level 2 field. it'll likely be level 3 by the time of the landing, plenty big to support a small invasion of only one supported division. I have two prepped, but I only see 6k troops here according to recon.

CHINA: Japanese CL and DDs now bombarding Wenchow on a regular schedule. Not doing too much to the base though. I have some ideas here.

Near Kweiyang Nick moves in a bunch of tank regiments to fill out the hex. The Japanese AV now equals ours at around 1000-1100. I've got a big Corps ready to move in after the first attack to trade out units, if possible.

CHINA: Interesting things going on here. Nick moves in the tank division in addition to the Guards Division at Paoshan!!! This should mean he's well over-stacked. Here will be a test of the benefit of possibly over-stacking a hex to get a momentary combat advantage.

My troops being overstacked by 50% (30k in a 20k hex) resulted in disruption and fatigue rising to around 15 disruption and 5 fatigue for the Burma division, but that's in my own base hex and with some good support there. The base supply requirement went from around 1.5k to 5k. So the Burma Division suddenly had 400 supply out of 2k required, or there about.

If the same thing happens to his troops an attack could be problematic for the Japanese, unless he gets control of the airspace. I currently have about 70 Hellcats, 10 operational Corsairs and 12 Kittyhawk III on CAP at 70%. I'll have more soon once supply gets built up in the base and damaged planes are fixed up. Previously this CAP held off 250+ sweeping Japanese fighters. We'll see if they can do it again.

If he closes Paoshan field we're in trouble. I'm flying in an Indian brigade with 43 squads (75/20 anti armor/anti soft). I have a few questions about what can be air-lifted. I'll make another post on this. I'd like to essentially 'replace' the Burma Division (now the Indian 39th division) with three Indian brigades all using 43 squads. To me it looks like I can transport everything other than motorized squads in a C-47.

Is this true? 6 pounder AT guns, 25 pounder arty, 3.7inch mountain guns?

If so, I could get about the same AV in here for less stacking cost but much better hitting power than the 200 Burmese rifle squads and Indian and Brit 41 troops. I'm starting today sending in the first brigade while still pulling an RAF base force to equal it out for stacking. If he strikes immediately hopefully he'll kill off some Chinese support squads in move mode and find the going tough against the new 43 squads, making it easier for me to then send in more troops over the next few days. We'll see.

Forts here are level 2 but building again at 21% now.

I've flown in 3 B-25D1 groups to Wenchow. I'm trying to catch the CL and DDs bombarding the base lately. I've got two groups on naval strike low, and the other set to bomb Shanghai port from 8k. I also threw some Wellingtons into Chungking to bomb Hankow which still has no fighters, but some 70 other planes, according to recon.

SUBS: Big contact for the Seadragon!!! The KB is found moving through the Java Sea! No shots fired, but it's great intel. Confirmed by the screenshot below showing fighter numbers, but the Kirishima and good DDs here, plus the CLAA Tatsuta all point to the real deal. Toying with sending search to guide subs into a secret base we're developing in the DEI. We'll see where it heads tomorrow. Shhhhhhhhh!

INDIA: At Silchar I've found a division and a bunch of AA. Once my second Indian division arrives I'll DA if they're still here. In the meantime I'll try to slow things up with some bombardment.

Nearly to Dimapur.

CENT PAC: Bombardment will head to Mili tomorrow. Had good bombing results destroying guns on the base and adding two new B-25 groups as well plus a lot of LR CAP.

SO PAC: PM invasion moving forward.

SIGINT: Still getting these. Still getting subs to intercept. No sightings so far.

Lots happening at Saipan. I wonder if the SIGINT is actually for this TF which is given a waypoint of Saipan and a destination of Babs, but is now unloading that division?

21/16th Division is loaded on a Gozan Cargo class xAK moving to Babeldaob.

Maybe. I've thought about moving Wasp up, but it's such a lone wolf I could easily take a Nettie hit too, so I've hesitated. It's enough now that he's got 6 CA in Cent Pac making full speed runs over 15 subs and then going up against much more numerous Allied assets. Still, I don't want to lose these cruisers either! I'll try to get more subs in the way and planes hunting from Makin.

I haven't yet, but I could throw some FP onto my new naval search base near his return path after these runs and see if they stop short and take a few 500 pounders.

As the Allies, you can more than afford to exchange three or even four cruisers for one Japanese heavy cruiser. I don't need to tell you the value they have to the IJN - Japan doesn't have enough fast battleships to risk them in combat except under ideal circumstances, and the IJN light cruisers are more or less oversized destroyers, so almost all the Japanese capability to fight surface actions depend on their heavy cruisers.

If I were you'd, I'd stack the hex with several heavy cruiser forces - The Salt Lake City and company might not have gave a good performance, but all's it takes is a single good engagement to put a major dent in Japan's ability to fight surface actions.

I tend to use the pre-war American CAs as CV escorts and allow just my modern CLs and CAs to take on the Japanese CAs.

How many Clevelands, Brooklyns, and Helana Class CLs do you have in the Pacific??

Check to TOE of the 39th before flying them out. I think it might be that one that upgrades to a really crappy TOE later on. Basically they convert to a Brigade sized Division with just 109 squads and some mortars. If that is the case you might as well get rid of them at Paoshan.

He's playing fast & loose with those cruisers - if you had a carrier present, it could have turned into a really bad day for him....as it is, I think you gave him a bit of a bloody nose (nothing serious), but it may just make him a bit more careful next time around.

Maybe. I've thought about moving Wasp up, but it's such a lone wolf I could easily take a Nettie hit too, so I've hesitated. It's enough now that he's got 6 CA in Cent Pac making full speed runs over 15 subs and then going up against much more numerous Allied assets. I'll try to get more subs in the way and planes hunting from Makin.

It was more averting a catastrophe the first tie around, as we were severely outnumbered. But I do know the mortice of the CAs for sure, and that's partly why I might not sour like I care enough about losing the Salt Lake City. I do care. I don't like losing any ship. But having 6 CA out here wen I know two are in the bag make me drool over the possibilities.

I've decided to bring mobile air support, but kept at a distance for now.
