Okay! I am sitting here pondering my moves; listening to a YoYoMa Cello solo and I need to cobble together my response to the Allied fleets off Marcus.

Hmmm., it really is quite a weak force. The KB matches up well, and throw in the numerous airports at the Marianas one could not ask for a better clash. But is it an invasion or a raid? There is only one large BB/CA fleet and no indication of an invasion...and therein lies the rub.

For, if it is only a raid, I would rather fight the Deathstars planes with my my land based planes and not risk any of the KB. Even a 1-2 trade in carriers would greatly benefit the Allies and without the lure of an amphibious invasion I just don't want to tangle with the Allies. Remember, one of my goals is to have a fleet in being to delay invasions which means that can't fight now in Oct of 43 and expect to remain a fleet in being.

Now adding to the complications the 46th Division is unloading at Tinian today, arrived yesterday and is definitely within an airstrike range tomorrow, although it is not spotted today, it has had two run ins with subs on their approach. Is this simply a raid in force an attempt to get some transports? If so he would pay a heavy price in lost planes I think.

Now, on the other hand, if there are 3 divisions enroute, this would simply be the gift that keeps on giving unless he is bringing a whole lot more to the fight than what I have spotted.

Thanks for letting me ramble here, helps me to make up my mind.

Do I have enough time, or should I simply just siege it and save the supplies?

Grit your teeth and do it. Those 72 units will need to sit at Chungking to keep the Chinese penned in anyways, so you'd be as well having the city (and the VP's, industry and strategic freedom that does with it).

The date is late, but at the very least you should close the hex sides and maybe probe his forts. Beginning the investment now, at this date... I'm not sure it's worthwhile. Then again, maybe.

You wouldn't need your entire army to keep the Chinese cooped up in the Chungking valley. Only a few thousand AV at most if you pick your hexes carefully.

I put the fighters up in the Marianas, and left some dangling bait just in case the Allies come calling with the deathstar. Plenty of bombers are resting today, just in case things heat up. Enhanced search some.

I have very close to 100 Georges flying CAP, not to mention all the A6M5cs, Oscar IVs, and Tony KI100-I flying lower CAP. If the Deathstar comes their airforce would be severely mauled at which point I can exercise lots of options.

Personally, I think it is a move to Bombard/Invade Marcus or perhaps a raid on Truk/Eniwetok. In which case, I am just a little slow in getting the heavy infantry to Marcus (they are loading on the HI now), but the construction engineers are leaving --one unit is unloading at Saipan, the other is getting picked up tonight and heading for Iwo so a Naval Guard and IJNAF group is pretty much it. Not even mines, not that they ever did me any good.

I have a respectable surface fleet hanging back 6-7 hexes from the Marianas and a lesser one from Marcus...if the opportunity presents itself they could race in for some torpedo strikes tomorrow.

A new deliberate attack at Trinkat against the Chindits and paratroopers there after a bombardment by the Fuso I hope. Fuso has to run the gauntlet of Allied subs...

I have a plan for getting a surface group to stand off from Ceylon 5-6 hexes and make runs into the southern tip of Ceylon each night looking for either cripples or reinforcements. I will need to use some cargo ships for fuelers, but I have the area under observation by both Norms and Glens and I feel there is an opportunity there. It would probably take three or four runs before an engagement unless my timing is superb.

The Tone is getting their RS forward torpedo tubes fixed at Singers and she will be ready for service in 3-5 days. The next up will be Musashi for some pierside repairs...while the Yamoto heads back to the fray.

Chungking, I am going to bombard again, and bomb the airfields. I suspect forts are respectable...they have been everywhere in China.

New Milestone: A squadron of Mustang's swept some Oscars. 7 Mustangs downed for 4 Oscars. That won't last, with newer models coming online down the road, but I will take it!

Nick D factory repaired and researching.

Peggy T still has one factory to repair and then they can r&d. Been at 1 factory for 2 months now it seems.

Next Jill arrives, still have 10 engines to use up for the last model and then we will advance the factory.

Should have my only Sentai of Jacks up and running about sometime this month. Probably send them to big base in Marianas.

Oct 2, 1943

No night bombing.

The Fuso goes into bombard the Chindits at Trinkat, and after three other ASW teams clash with subs, there is a Dutch sub in Trinkat itself and lines up the Fuso for a shot and hits.

The bombardment goes off, and only 25 casualties inflicted, bombing by Helens very low inflicts 6 casualties and a 1-2 attack nets no advantage for Japan on Trinkat other than the Paratroopers are starting to rebuild their assault value.

I managed to look at the Fuso, after the turn, and surprise, surprise only 6 flood damage 2 of which major! Imagine that!

Elsewhere, it looks like the Allied fleets are all headed to Marcus, where I successfully fast transported off another construction unit, but Marcus is doomed with 60 AV defending. I would put up a picture, but I accidentally closed out of the program before saving, and now I have to watch everything again.

At Hanoi, I guessed right from looking at the detection levels and moved the transports and sent in 2 Sentai of Oscars and 1 of Nicks, it works out kind of...trade 14 Oscars and 4 Nicks for 12 Lightnings, but the Oscars are too high to hit the 4Es that follow much and 3 Oscars are destroyed on the ground. My bad for not putting in a sentai of Georges at high altitude. It really is a black science, combating Allied 4Es.

And then the Allies moved their tanks forward, no artillery, and they trash the remains of the troops east of Tuang Gyi, who retreat towards Chiang Mai (but whether that is into the jungle or across the river I have no idea yet). Racing troops there, but I simply can't stop his tanks -- they have trashed two divisions, two regiments and a tank regiment. Running a tank army down a dirt road in the height of the monsoon against decent IJA infantry (43 squads). Wonderful.

Love the pagoda!

The monsoon is still with us, but it really only seems to hinder me.

Still haven't found any good news yet...I will keep looking.

Proposed next two defensive lines in Burma. Already have some engineers and AT guns digging in. Fresh 8th Division arrives shortly, bolstered by the 2nd Division (fresh, 43 squads) and with a strong ART contingent from Rangoon should make for a good roadblock I hope.

I suspect the Allies will attack near Prome where I have the Guards Division and a 2nd Tank with level 2 forts. I won't move them yet, hope to bloody their noses a little, but more likely will bloody mine. I could send the 2nd Division there, but don't think they would make it in time.

Indochina airfields have bases and in someplace troops to watch out for parachutists. I really need to hold at Moulmein/Trinkat/Chiang Mai until 44.

Sadly, yes. Since this is a no stacking game, it simply boils down to who can get the biggest stack in place and supplied. I think we know what the answer is already.

Moulmein - The Allies can base 2 BB (bombardment) TFs at Rangoon with CA/CLs to bombard base daily after minefield is cleared. This will raise ALL troop disruption values to the point that he will push you out easily and leave those troops non-combat effective.

My fear for you will be you NOT seeing all those American troops in combat reports in Burma. To me, that would mean they are going to prep for another place and not remain in this theater.

Not true, BBs can,t use Rangoon, it will have to be CAs. I guess that is what you meant.

Other than Marcus falling tomorrow, and the Allies bombing everywhere and the troops near Prome getting mauled by 2800 AV, the interesting thing I am doing is trying to slip Tanaka with light cruisers and destroyers unspotted close enough for a run into Rangoon harbor.

Even if they are spotted, I put a fair amount of lrcap over them, and hope to whittle down Allied anti ship land based air some more.

The 46th Division is fully unloaded at Tinian; Most of the bases at the Marianas have decent Allied detection levels, so he can count up to 900 planes stationed there. Hopefully that will be a deterrent, unfortunately, it will make him look at the Bonins more closely.

Georges will fly a LRCAP over Trinkat, with a squadron of Oscars low. Hopefully I can either ambush his sweepers or transports or both.

I am putting pieces into place for my next move in the Andamans...and hoping I can get land reinforcements up the dirt road to stop the Allied tank army. How many heavy artillery pieces and AT units will it take to stop 1700 tanks?

I am still looking for something positive to come from this most recent turn, and I guess the Fuso being so lightly damaged is about it, and also how well the Oscar IV continues to do against the Lightnings.

I have been rethinking Jack. Too late for this game, but the beauty of the Jack is the available dates for the last version, 1/45, meaning you can get the first Jack early, and the final Jack in 43 very early.

Nothing really can stand toe to toe with the P47, and only the first George can fly almost as high, but Jack looks to be not terrible in comparison to the P47. Throw a good helping of Oscars in low, suffer the dive, and you might do not so bad.

CV Capable Corsairs means my best CV fighter groups get them first and I use them solely for CAP while Hellcats are used for escort. It will mean any air strike on the DS will become more and more risky, Larry. Second, extra Hellcats go onto CVEs and nothing but Corsairs and Hellcats on any American CV/CVL/CVE in a few months. Not good for the Empire.

Aussie Spits will be about one air group per month, so those will take some time to be felt.

All this is bad enough, but your defeat in the air will be from those nasty Thuds!!

Jacks - Good for CAP due to their superior climb rate.

My regular coffee mug is the Stooges. One of them was my on-air moniker during my radio time.

Chungking forts begin the game at 6. He may have been able to build higher if he could get the supplies there.

I would not put your J2M2 any higher than the third altitude band, as their maneuver will be penalized against the P-47. The J2M5 you can fly wherever, as it has much better higher altitude maneuver. I'm unsure of when the penalty kicks in, and the Frank may be able to fly at its highest band but it still can't go to 42K so that's kind of a moot point.

Another plane comparison. Since my Oscars fly low, I guess not all of their maneuver advantage isn't being nullified by the Lightning's speed advantage or the Allies are using lousy Pilots. Of course all engagements are at the Lightning's extended range with drop tanks, but I never thought Oscar would do so well.

Very Pleased.

I am only going to have one squadron of Jacks for the entire game, unless they see very little losses, and I will not be accelerating any of the other Jack versions. Currently I have 0 squadrons, and 9 in the pool. Next month I will get one up and flying.

Gotta run the supplies out of Chungking, before I do anything.

Winning as Japan - This is one of those questions that I think each player has to define. Is it by VPs?? Is it lasting past the historical surrender?? Is it getting to 1946?? Is it inflicting a crushing defeat on Allied forces at some point during the game, even if you lose??

I've made it to April '44 as Japan (Scen 2) and just recently to August '44 as Allies (DBB 30) but my opponent had RL issues. I learned a lot playing both those games, but at some point I want to go the distance on one side or the other. Only hit April '42 vs Cribtop so I have a long ways to go. Once we get to August/September, I'll think about another BTS game. Might even go back to the Dark Side!!
