I don't even think that scenario modifications can access the hex side color. That blue color is the same as when the F6 key is toggled to show hex side codes (white=ground and sea units pass, blue=only sea units, green=only ground units, red=neither), rather than the w key toggled to show hex side ownership.

How that hex side is blue in your pic I don't know.

The scenario can't vary it, but a new hex file for a new map could. That's what I meant by the DBB map. It's not the stock map.

A blue side shows if the side SHOULD be blue both when the F6 key is used (preference for hexside detail is ON) and when the 'W' hotkey, for hexside ownership/control, is pushed. The blue color should never change. It's a water-side hex. It's in the map design.

I think we're saying the same thing. Just wanted to be clear on my part.

No, I don't think a hex file could. It can vary the hex side definitions (make this one a river, change that hex to mountain, etc.), but not the color code the game engine uses when the toggles are pressed to display things. Is that what you are saying?

Nope. The color calls are, I think, in the EXE. Maybe not.

I'm saying the DBB map could make the hex definition of that one hexside throw a blue color to indicate the river there was impassable to Ground (rapids, a dam, rocks, what have you) because the graphics don't allow for fat and narrow rivers. You have to put in a pretty big lake, a la some on the fringes of the Himalayas.

I don't know the DBB map at all. I'm not saying that hexside was altered in that hex file. But if it wasn't I don't see any way that side should be blue.

Brain fart. What I get from looking at obvert's close up. It's a road, not a river. So I have no idea AT ALL why it's blue.

Blue is a primary color. It can't be from a mix. So I'm guessing a bug or corrupted save.

It's definitely not part of the map, it's only present when hex side control is keyed using the 'W.' Sorry, I should have mentioned that but I did explain it in the original post when talking about how this was a path that my unit moved through, now which it's unable to move through, and which is blue. Only blue on both sides which is also interesting. the road goes from one hex to the other and the river is between 76, 46 and Chungking.

This is a path I've been using frequently from 76, 46 to 76, 47. Then the IJ took the 76, 47 hex (marked J here) but I moved back in opening the hex sides on both the NE and SW side of the hex, then which he recaptured completely, owning all hex sides, and then which I moved through again before he could move into 76, 46 with his units ( I already had a unit started which only required one day to move and he did not/could not have had the same as he had just taken the hex the day before). So I should own that hex side again but instead it's blue and I at least can't use it at all.

Rather than a resampled image here is a full enlarged pixel look, which is more clear.

Yeah, blue is not part of the palette for hexside movement. It's a permanent color there no matter what moves through. And Ground units can't. So it's some kind of bug, corruption, or artifact. It can't be there under the design through movement. And there's no reason for the map designer to have coded that side to be blue. It's a road hex.

You broke China, man.

Ha! I think you're right, unfortunately.

This is doubly bad because I don't want to replay turns due to other things going on, but I really could use that movement to get under the stacking in 76, 46. I'm at 53k (50k) now, so not bad, but not helpful when really digging to hold it. I' also want to move one more unit through from Chungking that has supply into the 76, 47 hex to make it tougher.

Ok. So looks like a candidate for michaelm.

I did notice an error message on loading a few turns ago. I think we might be off sync for versions. We've had that a few times. I'll ask Nick.

A couple of thoughts. Does this persist when the game is exited and rerun (AE, not just the turn)? If it does, I wonder if it was put in at some point and none of the three of us noticed. For example, I have seen where a unit from each of the opposing sides arrive in a previously empty hex on the same turn, nobody gets hex side ownership. Is it possible that this is the equivalent for this situation, where it means 'either side can move through this hex side from either direction'???

Obviously that is just speculation.

1. He took the hex.
2. My units moved in one day later from both sides on the road as they had already started and thus got hex side control again along the road.
3. He took the hex again.
4. I had another unit moving (from 76, 46, so through the blue line area) which did move and should have gained the hex side control again. Instead the blue line appeared. Units moving from the other side got hex side control a day later (as shown in the map with green on both sides).
5. I tried to move another unit through literally the next turn, but it would not go that way, and instead rerouted to an adjacent hex if sent. That's when I checked with the 'W' key and saw this blue line.

Yes, it does persist.

Maybe it's dual control, which turns into neither? I really have no idea.

Isn't it possible for units to "swap" hexes if they end up moving at the same time?

But the color blue can't occur in any case by movement of any kind. It's in the pwhex file, or ordered by it rather.

Isn't dual control, or neither white?

Looks like a map error to me.

Looks like the map designer got to watching one of those new TV series with invisible domes or other force fields and subliminally put one in the pwhex file, with random appearance! Never watched the program enough to discover if there is a way past the force field.
Maybe try one of these ...

Yeah, no reason at all that blue line should be there. It has to be a bug.

Could the "blue line" be a PWHEX issue??

I don't see how because it is only there when the 'w' hotkey is toggled.

June 30 - July 1, 1943

SUBS: Finally a sub pays off in So Pac. It's hard to get an attack let alone a hit with all of the air patrols near Rabaul, but Tinosa finally gets in to nail Hyuga with one TT. Steelhead hits an xAK near Manokwari with one fish.

INDIA: The Thunderbolts make it across India and are in Ledo waiting to transfer to Chungking. Another groups is arriving to Aden in a few days. I know these are not ideal defensive planes, but they are better than anything else I can field, and they're service 1 amazingly! So this is where they'll go. I also need to move the Hellcats out and get them back to the Enterprise. I have two Corsair groups in range too if he starts pushing up there.

Tried a tank only DA near Imphal, which went okay, but it now leaves us without any fit units. I'll simply hold until he finally walks out here and keep bombarding.

CENT PAC: The invasion of Wotje is moving to a rendezvous spot. I'll have tanks, combat engineers, a Marine regiment and some arty for this one.

SO PAC: The torpedo into Hyuga started a frenetic day in the South Pacific as Nick went for my ships sitting at Vangunu. He picked a good day as I'd literally that turn removed a bunch of 70-80exp pilots from the P-40E and P-39D groups, but I'd also left them short after filling up the newly arrived P-47s. Three of the groups had only ~15 planes ready and manned, and an extra 30 fighters would have made it a tough day for him I think. The weather helped us out too, and altogether it turned into a pretty big slaughter of Japanese planes.

He did manage to get a TT into Colorado leaving her out of the next action with 33 float damage. Should be a few months in the Sydney dry dock. I've got a few more BBs at PH just finishing upgrades though. Pretty awesome to see DBB flak in action, as 25+ Kates made it through the interception phase and made an attack run, but only one hit even on the old BB.

This should leave the door open finally for the invasion of Buin. I didn't go on the 1st to allow groups to recover, and will push ahead on the 2nd. Tense moments.

CHINA: Nick has also seen the blue line now and he can't move there either. We'll just keep playing and see what develops. I'll imagine it was an earthquake that wiped out the road.

A DA at 76, 46 leaves the Chinese with some big disablements but lots more IJA vehicles ruined too.

SIGINT: Looks lke more than I thought is at Horn Island. I'll avoid that and hopefully let it stay there!

31st Division is located at Horn Island(91,128).

I'll take a torpedo in Colorado for this kind of carnage, but it was a close run thing on the 30th. i have to be more careful, and it's good Nick is still thinking offensively to keep me on my toes. I like it.

He did manage to get a TT into Colorado leaving her out of the next action with 33 float damage. Should be a few months in the Sydney dry dock.

Does this mod give Sydney a larger drydock than stock? At 30K in stock, a Colorado-class BB will not fit the dock and unlike upgrades that just use the dockyard shops and cranes, you need to put the ship in the dock to repair floatation damage. Better start her for PH or a large enough floating dock.

I bet those 100 kilo SAP bombs on Battleships were very effective, not! Pre beta they could build fires and take down a BB, but with the Beta the best I have seen is disable some gun mounts, etc.

It is really tough to get a good coordinated strike with land based air. No idea where Japan flew from, or about HQa, leaders, etc., but a more coordinated strike could have been nasty or if the sweepers went in first. I really like seeing the sweepers at 25K...

Is that the first appearance of the Frank a?

You're so right. Didn't think about this but I do have the giant ARD coming down south soon. I'll have to check as I've completely forgotten to look and see where it is right now.

The ship can move just fine at 14 knots so PH is still is a good option.

The Frank did some sweeps at Chittagong and did okay there. We have a 25k limit for sweeps in 43. Then 31k for 44. No limit for 45-46. So 25k is it right now, and especially with my Hellcats or Corsairs high, coming lower wouldn't be fun. I was impressed we did so well again the group of 36 Judys and 24 A6M5c after the sweeps and the previous strikes. I thought that many DB flying that fast would break through the remaining 33 plane CAP, especially since the Corsairs were up high and the rest had been beaten up already. Only 1 Judy got an attack run and missed.

Again, our pilot quality may be paying off here as these groups all have a bunch of 60-70exp guys even after removing the top 25% to move into P-47s. These kinds of days will simply add to that advantage, hopefully.

The Lilys had the misfortune to target the BBs rather than some CL or DD, and yes, those were just bouncers. No damage.

Yep, sort of makes it a good idea to leave this BB out of the South Pacific until her AA is fully upgraded. Still, I would trade a hit on an old BB for the slaughter of so many attack aircraft. Your flak is getting deadly. I am still in late 42 in my campaign but all my ships just upgraded to 40mm bofors. That has got to help.

TOTAL LOSSES from bombardments at Chungking: June 07 - 30, 1943
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've been looking at the CRs for the Chungking bombardments and I'm starting to wonder if they're more deceiving than I'd even thought before. There is definitely FOW here, but as you loo through notice the gun numbers are pretty stable for the Japanese in spite of supposedly large losses. The vehicle numbers fluctuate more, but not close to what is claimed in the CRs.

I'm thinking two things. One, the units attacking are just the arty units and some damage may be going to other units in the hex that I then won't see reflected in the total numbers for each attack. Two, the reports, if they reflect actual numbers at all, seem to show disabled devices as 'present' in the attack regardless of whether they participate or not. So it's tough to determine if he's really taking losses in these bombardments or not.

It's just something to do while Nick is away visiting his father, but makes me think I do need a bit more arty here and I'll only know whether it's effective in counter-bombarding when those bombardments are actually forced to stop!

As shown below (and with a few CRs missing as well) the number of guns lost or disabled according to the CRs during this period exceed the number of guns that are actually here. Of course some could be destroyed/disabled in units not participating in the bombardments, but it seems highly unlikely that ALL guns affected would be from those units, and it's also unlikely a large number would be fixed in an enemy controlled hex quickly enough to continue with daily bombardments if losses were actually this severe.

SUBS: Lots of midgets at Buin. As our forces enter at least three are sunk and the I-170 is hit 9 times over two separate interactions.

SO PAC: The invasion of Buin is on ... or wait, uh, no it's not. Well it's sort of on. Everything made it to the hex, three SCTFs including one of fast BBs, several minesweeping and ASW TFs, the large amphib TF with BB Maryland, a CA and a bunch of valuable APA as well as some PTs and two fleet subs. The problem is that I didn't set the troops to unload. Crap.

So Nick's strikes went in and we did a decent job of protecting the skies even though he had CAP in the base and support from Torokina. Our high CAP of Lightnings and Hellcats did really well throughout the day, but some strikes still got through. Luckily the hits were almost all on BBs. We got lucky on the one critical hit on an APA with a 500kg bomb. The troops are fine on the ship (1 disabled squad) and the ship has 14 system and 4 minor flat damage. A near miss.

Maryland took the brunt of the strikes with 5 x 500kg hits from the Judys for only 14 system, 4(1) float and 4 engine damage. Amazing.

A few other bouncers from the Lilys damaged the signal flags on the two fast BBs.

I contemplated this one a bit, knowing he has strong surface forces six hexes away at Rabaul, and decided ... to stay and land the troops. Nick's email note basically says it al about what I might be facing tomorrow.

big boys are those you brought with you at Buin eh!? :-) Pretty risky not to unload your men this turn... the night is dark and full of terrors as you know

Get out the popcorn, this could be a big one, and might not go well for the Allies, but I've taken every precaution to make sure we have a fighting chance here. Another 3 CA TF is flanking in from Milne Bay, the two PT TFs are moving to Torokina to hopefully head off any rush in, another set of PTs will move to Buin, 4-5 subs are transiting the approaches to the area, and a number of fresh air groups are added both to the CAP and to a strike meant to draw defenders away. Also, some Beauforts and SBD will be set to pick off any remnants although no escorts are available, as all fighters are set to sweep or to LR CAP. I'll be striking Torokina with 45 4Es and Spit Vc sweeps, and the LR CAP over Buin will be twice as strong as the previous day.

He could run some CVs in, but if they're at Truk that would still be a flank run and some at least might not get in range since the Junyo/Hiyo are only 25 knots. They're air groups also took a bit of a spanking in Cent Pac recently, so might not be as fresh as they could be since the Judy has a service 3.

It'll be interesting! Fingers crossed.

CENT PAC: The Wotje invasion will also land tomorrow, with two CVE supporting and a three BB TF bombarding in addition to the embedded BB/CA. The old CL TF will provide surface support. The TFs only had a 4/4 yesterday, so not sure what he'll make of what's out here. Roi Namur looks about closed now after the naval bombardments and 4E strikes, which is good. No other base in range is over size 1.

CHINA: Word back from Michaelm in the tech thread is that the blue line means BOTH sides own the hex side, in this case meaning neither can use it. He may have another look at an earlier turn file but has also offered to fix it in a current one if we send it to him, which I'll do tonight hopefully.

The P-47s are in Chungking. Hellcats move out.

Another decent day in the air, but this won't matter if those Judy that do get through cause havoc in the next turn.

Amazing number of Lilys shot down by flak from the fast BB TF!

The problem is that I didn't set the troops to unload. Crap.

Use that to your advantage; in your next email tell him that you fooled him good by making him think that you were invading there, but you're not. Then invade anyway the following turn!

Well, too late, but yes, something like that.

Basically by the time he sent the email he had set his moves for that turn. Since I would be setting mine next and deciding on unloading, I still got the info that he assumed I was unloading there rather than going on to Torokina (which is what I assumed he would think). If he had thought I was heading to Torokina then I would imagine he'd definitely send surface forces as it's closer to Rabaul and a stronger better defended base.

As it is I interpreted his email as a psychological test. He infers there will be dangers in the night. I know those are not likely to include Hyuga, as that ship was torpedoed, and that he'd have to move through a PT infested Torokina into a hex with three surface combat TFs set to react 1 hex, which all have good leaders and all major ammo left. I've got a lot of night search going, so any arriving ships will likely be spotted, and the subs may have a chance to do something too. He may just be using the email to discourage me from sticking in and unloading. We'll see!

I know his air forces have suffered the past few turns, where mine are actually remarkably fresh, with fatigue below 20 in virtually all groups and new groups added in as well. The Amphibs should also unload at least half of the troops before he even makes it to the hex, and more should unload before daylight, probably 80% if not all. I don't want to lose a lot here, but due to low moonlight I think our radar equipped ships, PTs and subs should have an advantage.

Nick is aggressive so we may see a big bust up here. We're as ready as possible.

Here is the scene. Lots of possibilities. Can't wait to see what he's decided to do!
