More quiet times.

Near Karachi, a glenn reports sighting a BB and the task force shows as having a CV and 3 auxiliary craft. The task force is co-located with the sub but no luck and no attack.

Local fuel shortages reported for the HI at Chengtu and Chungking, don't really matter.

Damage SS Triton near Tarakan.

Liberators hit Tarakan at night again. A few A6M5d-S get their first action. No damage to the oil wells. 7 Ki-84a and 2 A6M5d-S lost for 2 Liberators to flak and ops. The A6M5d-S seem to be scoring quite a bit of damage on the Liberators so may have contributed to losses.

Ki-74-I to 4/45.

Notice that in Burma his tanks have moved ahead of his supporting AA so send some bombers and fighters in to bomb at 2000 feet. Negligible damage inflicted.

At Sampit I send some P1Y1 and G3M3 to hit at night from 10000 feet. No damage and lose 8 planes. Then during the day sweeps strike and find no defenders and the bombers from Miri fail to arrive. Altogether a waste of time and planes and I now need to move the fighters back into Miri to protect it.

Ki-46-III KAI to 2/44.

December 31st 1943

More quiet.

Ki-45 KAId Nick Night Fighter enters production at a rate of just 30 because I plan on using the Ki-46-III KAI Dinah for the army mostly and that will be available from later in January. There are two current groups that upgrade to the Ki-45 NF, 4th and 5th Sentai. I'll upgrade 5th Sentai (42 aircraft) in thirds, then upgrade 4th Sentai but immediately change it to the Ki-46 NF. So, by end February, should have 4th Sentai (36), 81st IF Chutai (12), 9th IF Chutai (9) flying the Ki-46 and 5th Sentai (42) flying the Ki-45 with the 53rd Sentai (49) arriving April and will, probably, also get the Ki-46.

G4M2 Betty available but I will stick with the G3M3 Nell for the navy bomber.

Ki-67-Ia Peggy available for the army. I think I will produce some of them as the extra range may compensate for the loss of some bombs relative to the Ki-49-IIb and the increased SR. Looks like I have enough of the engines to keep producing N1K1-J, Ki-84r, B7A2 and still produce KI-67-Ia at a rate of 30 for at least the year.

December Overview

Allies took Bandjermasin, Hollandia, landed on Truk and have pushed forward in Burma and have secured some abandoned areas in Papua New Guinea. Only at Truk did I oppose the Allies; they have suffered losses but established a beachhead that should be able to take the base this month.

In the air I have mostly held my own, on land the army is doing well at inflicting losses and at sea about evens (might have been better if I hadn't experimented with SSX and MTB).

Japanese losses: 9 SSX and 12 MTB as I experimented with defenses around Truk. 6 SS lost in the Truk area. 2 Ansyu class PB lost to Allied Assault Bombers in re-supply efforts/failed CAP traps around Billiton.

Allied losses, hard to tell: 2 xAP, 1 xAK, 1 TK, 4 AM, 9 YMS, 3 or 4 DMS, and about another 50 VP worth, could contain a sub or two, some DD, maybe some LST, claimed sinkings of cruisers, BB and CV seem highly unlikely.
       Japan Allies
Total: +188 +683
Base: -473 +121
Air: +321 +357
Land: +222 +93
Sea: +118 +112

December Industry

Damage to Palembang is showing. Usage was in line with expectations but less damage to oil wells than I expected. Djambi was knocked out but only lost 94 oil wells over the month. Magwe, Medan, Bengkalis and Northern parts of Borneo remain in production and also still getting some out of Balikpapan/Samarinda (though I am using inefficient small tankers to get the fuel out). Expect I will abandon Magwe next month and lose at least half of the remaining oil wells in the SRA.

I've also reduced fuel in ship bunkers by about 25,000 over the month as I am getting transports back to the home isles pretty empty, in some cases allowing them to cover the last few miles with empty bunkers. Also have moved some of the more extravagant tankers back to Nagasaki as the efficient ones can cover most needs to move the reduced fuel/oil production. I'm then using some of these on the Fusan-Fukuoka run on "Do Not Refuel" until their bunkers are empty.

Total Equivalent Supply: -58,000
Oil: -65,534
Fuel: -133,045
Supply: +133,660
HI: +122,779
Vehicles: +2,887
Arms: +1,555

Defenses in Bonin Islands

Just level 2 airfields at Chichi and Iwo -Jima and level 1 at Haha-Jima. Not that much artillery present. Looking to send another brigade to each of Chichi and Haha -Jima when have the PP to be able to afford it.

Defenses in Marianas Islands

Guam and Saipan have level 8 forts. Pagan has level 7 nearly 8, Tinian 6 will be 7 soon, Rota 6 but needs the engineers from Pagan to reach level 7 soon.

Guam level 8 airfield, Rota, Tinian and Saipan are level 4 and Pagan is level 3.

All the main bases are over-stacked by up to 10%, all these bases have 30,000+ supply.

Main defending forces:

Guam(650 AV): 3rd Tank Division, 2nd Amphibious Brigade, Kure 7th SNLF, 3rd Special base Force, 4 30cm Howitzers.

Rota(930 AV): 116th Division, 38th Division, 14th Tank Regiment, Det 3rd Special Base Force,

Tinian(840 AV): 57th Division, 12th & 18th Garrisons, Wake Coastal Guns, 1st Ind Tank Co.

Saipan(650 AV): 54th Division, 21st Special Base Force, Saipan Naval Fort, 18th & 19th Tank regiments

Pagan(670 AV): 1st Division, 25th Ind Mixed brigade, Combined 8th SNLF.

All bases have some CD or DP guns and some mines.

Guam has 380 aviation support with about another 300 on the other bases.

The three dot bases have forts 3 and about 30 AV, enough to deter cheap submarine invasions but any serious bombardment would probably wipe the troops out.

The Mariana defences seem very strong. I'm just really surprised the strongest defence is on Rota and the weakest on Guam
Shouldn't be Guam the more protected? It's the only AF that can be builded till level 8 so doubling the number of planes.

Guam needs all those aviation units to use that space. About 8 AF units gives the needed aviation support and has a stacking cost of 1500 or so each so that is almost a divisions worth.

However, the real thing is that it has units with high firepower. For example, the unit of 4 30mm Howitzers has a stacking cost of 1200+ and no AV whereas an infantry division has about 400 AV in 14000 stacking cost. Truk is clearly showing that he can't get an AV advantage so firepower is what will matter.

Rota has ended up with more than I expected because I have been lifting troops from Ponape.

I-15 finds a damaged New Mexico near Pearl Harbour and adds a torpedo to her. She will have made the yards at Pearl okay.

Some N1K1 Rex fly into Truk and exchange 6 for 6 Liberators and 1 Mitchell lost to air/flak/ops.

Looks like the marines at Truk have recovered and may attack again soon.

Large numbers of Yusen N AK enter the yards to get more AA fitted.

LCDR Tanabe, Yahachi has an aggressiveness of 85 but he still does this:
quote:

Submarine attack near Stewart Island at 117,139

Japanese Ships
SS I-27

Allied Ships
xAKL Silindoeng

xAKL Silindoeng is sighted by SS I-27
Captain of SS I-27 elects not to launch torpedoes at this target

But then he decides to surface and sink a small xAKL:
quote:

Submarine attack near Stewart Island at 117,139

Japanese Ships
SS I-27

Allied Ships
xAKL Lorinna, Shell hits 4, heavy fires

xAKL Lorinna is sighted by SS I-27
SS I-27 attacking xAKL Lorinna on the surface
Tanabe, Yahachi decides to submerge SS I-27 due to damage

Target was carrying fuel and sinking sounds heard.

No air strike at Truk today but a land attack launched drops forts to 3.
quote:

Ground combat at Truk (112,108)

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 29959 troops, 488 guns, 614 vehicles, Assault Value = 1108

Defending force 22372 troops, 238 guns, 60 vehicles, Assault Value = 348

Allied engineers reduce fortifications to 3

Allied adjusted assault: 253

Japanese adjusted defense: 2701

Allied assault odds: 1 to 10 (fort level 3)

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), forts(+), leaders(+), experience(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
800 casualties reported
Squads: 7 destroyed, 70 disabled
Non Combat: 2 destroyed, 13 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 9 disabled
Units destroyed 1

Allied ground losses:
3220 casualties reported
Squads: 30 destroyed, 195 disabled
Non Combat: 12 destroyed, 35 disabled
Engineers: 16 destroyed, 59 disabled
Guns lost 50 (9 destroyed, 41 disabled)
Vehicles lost 73 (21 destroyed, 52 disabled)

Disabled squads looked pretty evenly spread between the two marine divisions so should be a few days before the next attack. My destroyed unit was a fragment of a base force which I had air-lifted all except 1 support squad.

32 land VP picked up so looks like Allied losses were underestimated.

SS I-43 commissioned

Liberators hit Miri at night. A6M5d-S trade 5 lost for 4 Liberators downed but lose 34 oil wells.

An Allied task force strays close to Cocos Islands and Nells put 2 torpedoes into the AK Allioth, on fire, heavy damage but no sinking sounds.

Allied paras take Mataram against no defense.

No Allied bombing of Truk (have my N1K1 Rex scared him off?). He could be resting them before an attack on some other base.

Heavy radio traffic at sea near Kavieng. Probably an amphibious task force I spotted near Ndeni a couple of days ago. Will it stop at Kavieng to re-organise and recover from disruption or continue on to attack somewhere, such as Woleai?

Liberators hit Miri at night again, I had added some Ki-43-IV to the defense. 9 A6M5d-S, 3 Ki-43-IV swapped for 2 B-24D1 downed. 1 point of oil damage. The A6M5d-S does not seem to be performing well so I will split the group in thirds, convert two back to the J1N1-S and leave just one flying the A6M5d-S. The P1Y2-S is what I plan on being the navy main night fighter but not expecting that before May.

Allied forces landing at Saumlaki. A few Nells from Koepang armed with bombs strike at 1000 feet (they only used 1x250kg and 2x60kg bombs, I had expected 2x250kg). Score 1 60kg hit on an AM.

I-182 finds a transport force near Kusaie Island and sinks a YMS.

Good to see that you're fighting the good fight on Truk. If the Marines are as battered as the combat report would suggest, they might be out of action for a couple of months as they recover. That's the big risk for the Allies for those sorts of operations - it requires your best troops, but a bad roll on the auto-shock attack and they're out of the game for a couple of months.

Keep holding on!

Liberators hit Miri again, 9 oil wells lost, 8 Ki-43-IV and 5 A6M5d-S for 3 B-24D1.

Allies sweep Truk but no CAP in place.

Allies capture Saumlaki but the army dive bombers hit the Allied fleet:
quote:

xAP John C. Calhoun, Bomb hits 6, heavy fires, heavy damage
AM Wagga, Bomb hits 2, and is sunk
AM Wallaroo, Bomb hits 1, heavy fires

Naval Attack: 2 x 100 kg SAP Bomb

Heavy smoke from fires obscuring xAP John C. Calhoun
Heavy smoke from fires obscuring AM Wallaroo

Allied invasion forces off Madjene. Nells (bombs at 2000 feet) try attacks with no success and the Navy dive bombers try morning and afternoon. 800kg bombs make holes but very few of them:
quote:

Japanese aircraft
D4Y4 Judy x 22
N1K1-J George x 22
Ki-84a Frank x 17

Japanese aircraft losses
D4Y4 Judy: 14 damaged
D4Y4 Judy: 2 destroyed by flak

Allied Ships
DE Chew
CL Hobart
DE Express
DE Peary, Bomb hits 1, on fire
DE Paul Jones
DE Decoy
DE Parrott

--------------------
Japanese aircraft
D4Y4 Judy x 14
N1K1-J George x 22

Japanese aircraft losses
D4Y4 Judy: 10 damaged
D4Y4 Judy: 1 destroyed by flak

Allied Ships
AKA Alcyon
CL Hobart
APA Hunter Liggett, Bomb hits 1, on fire
DE Chew
AKA Electra, Bomb hits 1, on fire

It must be the Allied flak that put the navy off their aim. 7 D4Y4, 4 G3M3 lost.

I-176 was run over by the Allied invasion force heading for Madjene and sunk.

I-8 torpedoes AKL FS-165 (probably fatal, 1 VP) East of Hawaii and is lightly damaged in return (6/6/0).

Mandatory bombardment at Madjene shows the Allies fairly weakened, they took heavy disablements in the landing, but the likely Allied bombardment will probably trash my defenders. Will try and see if can get some air strikes in.

Also, sighted carriers and an invasion force just off Aitape. If he attacks Aitape I don't care but if he carries on towards Sorong or turns North for Woleai it gets more interesting.

Massed Allied forces are attacking across the river at Prome. Reports of 90000+ troops, 1500 vehicles, etc. Opposing them is just a division and a unit of 6 28cm Howitzers behind level 4 forts. I'm going to stay and see what kind of effect I can have just to get a feel for future defense. He is attacking from a hex with a 40,000 limit so I wonder what the effect of his over-stack is?

I-122, I-171 and RO-106 are lost tangling with the Allied forces around Madjene. I-171 put a torpedo into APA Hunter Liggett (already hit by an 800kg bomb) but no sinking sounds. If she sinks (30 VP) it might have been worth the loss of 3 subs.

Heavy Allied bombardment at Madjene. Concentrates mostly on the port and does some damage to the base force there but no damage to the naval guard unit defending.

Liberators pound Ruteng into the ground. As there are no forces there and the base is unoccupied this may have been a routing error. Or he may have back tracked the direction arrows from yesterday's attacks and guessed the wrong base.

Some Helens try and hit the Allied troops at Madjene but the jungle is enough to protect them against significant damage. May try again with the dive bombers and 800kg bombs, he seems to have little flak present.

The Allied carriers have moved on past Hollandia and look to be heading for Sorong or somewhere in that area. In strike range of B7A2 at Sorong but fail to strike. He was also in range for the Army bombers at Boela and they would have been chewed up as they have little escort.

He is now in range for a run in and naval bombardment.

Another carrier force is detected near Aitape.

Mixed result for Allied attack at Truk:
quote:

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 29006 troops, 487 guns, 607 vehicles, Assault Value = 1020

Defending force 21999 troops, 237 guns, 60 vehicles, Assault Value = 306

Allied adjusted assault: 431

Japanese adjusted defense: 904

Allied assault odds: 1 to 2 (fort level 3)

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), forts(+), leaders(+)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
2133 casualties reported
Squads: 47 destroyed, 67 disabled
Non Combat: 4 destroyed, 81 disabled
Engineers: 1 destroyed, 19 disabled
Guns lost 38 (4 destroyed, 34 disabled)

Allied ground losses:
1534 casualties reported
Squads: 18 destroyed, 136 disabled
Non Combat: 3 destroyed, 44 disabled
Engineers: 11 destroyed, 62 disabled
Guns lost 22 (3 destroyed, 19 disabled)
Vehicles lost 39 (20 destroyed, 19 disabled)

Squad losses mostly from the Kure 5th SNLF that was trashed. No fort reduction but the Allies achieve a 1::2 result.

The first of the ground troops that have marched from Palembang arrive at Medan. Air base forces to build up the defense of this important base.

Disasters all round.

Allied land unopposed at Biak.

Allies land at Eniwetok and are wiped out:
quote:

Ground combat at Eniwetok (127,108)

Allied Shock attack

Attacking force 777 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 21

Defending force 5032 troops, 58 guns, 18 vehicles, Assault Value = 128

Assault collapses, attacking force wiped out

Allied ground losses:
971 casualties reported
Squads: 49 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 25 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 8 destroyed, 0 disabled
Units destroyed 1

Assaulting units:
4th Marine Raider Battalion

No initial bombardment from air or sea so I don't know if he had bad intel from somewhere or messed up some orders. One thing I have been doing to try and confuse his intel is split units, makes some difficulty guessing how many troops at each location.

Numerous planes are sent from Sorong to strike at Allied carriers near Biak. Torpedo bombers approach first and 4 G3M3 and 7 B7A2 get through CAP to launch torpedoes at carriers, all miss. Army dive bombers come in next and all are slaughtered.

54 Ki-43-IV, 4 Ki-43-IIIa, 20 Ki-48-IIb, 18 Ki-48-IIc, 13 B7A2, 9 G3M3 for just 12 F6F-3 losses.

Co-ordination wasn't too bad with each type of bomber coming as a single group. So I think next time I try and use LBA I will just have D4Y4 and escorts present.

I send some fighters in at 27,000 feet to bomb his troops approaching Prome. Hope to use up AA flak with some safety and maybe cause some disruption and fatigue amongst some units. Doesn't work well as 10 Ki-43-IV are shot down by flak to score just a few hits.

Bomb his troops at Madjene with bombers at 2000 feet and dive bombers, hoped the 800kg bombs could do some damage, no such luck.

Allied liberators flatten Makassar airfield, just a few support troops there.

Allies clear the minefields at Rabaul, there is no supply left for the guns.

N1K5-J to 5/45.

So what are the Allies up to?

Landings at Biak, Saumlaki, Madjene suggest a push towards either Yap/Ulithi area or Mindano. However, none of the landings involve significant forces (carriers can be re-located easily) so it could all be a big feint.

The landing at Truk suggested a push towards the Marianas but I expect he has been disappointed at the poor progress there so may be looking at my defenses in Marianas and been scared off.

The landing at Eniwetok doesn't make sense as an attempt to capture the base but could make sense as trying to drive away my float planes from there, but a bombardment would have done that better. So this could also be some sort of feint or misdirection.

His carriers are pretty well placed to move quickly towards Sumatra so he could be planning on covering a landing to isolate some of my forces in Burma or to strike at North Sumatra.

Or he could be trying to draw my forces South and then launch a hammer blow against the Home Isles. This seems the most likely explanation so I think KB will stay at home.

From what I have seen in the combat replay, the Marine divisions don't look all that battered, it is the armour that has been trashed. I'm pleased by the defense they are putting up. I'm fairly sure a big contribution is the naval fortress, some of those guns have serious damage potential.

Not a small island so not been any shock attacks.

I send some fighters in at 27,000 feet to bomb his troops approaching Prome. Hope to use up AA flak with some safety and maybe cause some disruption and fatigue amongst some units. Doesn't work well as 10 Ki-43-IV are shot down by flak to score just a few hits.

Holy smokes!

Army dive bombers come in next and all are slaughtered.

I have noticed that the Lilly IIb and IIc are very fragile planes for whatever reason. They suffer exceptionally high losses in A2A and against enemy Flak.

They have armor and a high durability but very weak in guns...not sure why they suffer so much.

January 8th 1944

Liberators hit Miri at night, there are J1N1-S on CAP and they do very well, 4 J1N1-S lost for 9 B-24D1 downed (7 in air-air). However, the J1N1-S runs out of ammo overly quickly and there are none left for the last strike that manages to knock out 13 oil wells with just 4 bomb hits.

At Eniwetok the Allies continue to land and get this unusual result:
quote:

Invasion Support action off Eniwetok (127,108)
Defensive Guns engage approaching landing force

24 Coastal gun shots fired in defense.

Allied Ships
AMC Hector, Shell hits 1

12cm/56 T03 AA Gun battery firing at AMC Hector

I doubt a 12cm AA gun does much damage to a ship. During the replay some message flashes up about a landing force wiped out.

Allied battleships bombard Rabaul heavily. Supply is gone and the troops suffer badly.

Biak is captured by the Allies, auto-capture so I don't know what he has landed.

Troops at Madjene are bombed heavily, the naval guard unit in defense is disrupted badly but losses are light.

It is a pity I pulled the LRCAP from the base as he sent no fighter support.

Forts at Yap reach level 6. Engineers are being transferred to Rota and Mindanao to bring the base back down to the stacking limit.

Something Allied sinks (best guess the xAP I damaged at Saumlaki).

Ki-83 to 7/45.

January 9th 1944

A night strike from Babeldoab tries to target the Allied carriers but all planes stray due to night.

Allies night bombard Rabaul and Madjene.

Hellcats sweep Madjene in the morning and clear the LRCAP out the way for the bombers. A deliberate attack by the Allies gets a 1::1 result and reduces forts to 1.

Thunderbolts sweep Samarinda in the afternoon.

Over the two combats: 37 N1K1-J, 9 Ki-84a, 5 Ki-43-IV, 4 Ki-84r for 15 F6F-3, 8 P-47D2. Not a good ratio.

22 pilots KIA and 24 pilots WIA.

Carrier planes hit Sorong. Allies lose 10 TBM-1C and 4 SB2C-1C to ops and flak, I like that even though it closes the base.

Overall for the day a 57 to 40 air loss is okay.

CL Yahagi commissioned.

Allies attack at Prome, one day earlier than I expected. I had reinforced but the rail moves took longer than I expected and some troops had not finished unpacking. Mixed result:
quote:

Allied Shock attack

Attacking force 85547 troops, 1298 guns, 1347 vehicles, Assault Value = 2930

Defending force 43954 troops, 449 guns, 234 vehicles, Assault Value = 1355

Allied adjusted assault: 1752

Japanese adjusted defense: 598

Allied assault odds: 2 to 1 (fort level 4)

Allied Assault reduces fortifications to 2

Combat modifiers
Defender: forts(+), op mode(-), preparation(-), fatigue(-)
Attacker: shock(+), disruption(-)

Japanese ground losses:
2275 casualties reported
Squads: 6 destroyed, 262 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 47 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 16 disabled
Guns lost 77 (4 destroyed, 73 disabled)
Vehicles lost 31 (5 destroyed, 26 disabled)

Allied ground losses:
4548 casualties reported
Squads: 24 destroyed, 340 disabled
Non Combat: 7 destroyed, 51 disabled
Engineers: 55 destroyed, 193 disabled
Guns lost 100 (2 destroyed, 98 disabled)

Defending units:

102nd Infantry Regiment
65th Division
9th Tank Regiment
63rd Division
15th Ind.Medium Field Artillery Regiment
23rd Air Defense AA Regiment
3rd Hvy.Artillery Regiment
2nd RF Gun Battalion
4th Medium Field Artillery Regiment
6th Ind.Hvy.Art. Battalion
29th Field AA Machinecannon Company
32nd Field AA Battalion

My disruptions are mostly in a division that had not unpacked. Losses favour my force and, with luck, the disruption from the river crossing will delay an Allied attack long enough to complete unpacking. However, forts reduced to 2, main Allied losses are in engineers which are easily replaceable, really want to destroy vehicles and guns.

Rabaul is being given a pounding.

Madjene is swept and bombed and the deliberate attack does a lot of damage. Disruption is out of control for my defenders.

Allied carriers are heading East having established the base at Biak.

January 11th 1944

Allied carriers move back towards Biak. Planes find two of my subs that I had tried to move out of the way. I-183 is sunk and I-38 is crippled and will be lost on the morrow. I also lose I-166 trying to attack a troop convoy near Aitape. Do Allies get some sort of boost to ASW efficiency in 1944, seems to have been a recent step change in their effectiveness?

Allies hit Samarinda airfield in daylight but it is a bit of mess up for the Allies. Spitfires and Lightnings sweep first and the defense does well enough. Then a 100+ Liberators attack and it is a disaster as aircraft are unable to penetrate defensive fire. Fortunately, lots of fragments of Liberators arrive and heavy losses are inflicted on them. Finally, Thunderbolts sweep but only a single plane is left in the air for them to shoot down.

26 N1K1-J, 10 Ki-84a, 9 Ki-43-IV, 9 Ki-84r traded for 28 B-24D1, 9 B-24J, 10 Spitfire VIII, 8 P-38G, 1 P-47D2. A nice overall result but the airfield at Samarinda is devastated and there are very few planes flightworthy.

Means I will need to abandon Samarinda and Balikpapan which also means will not be able to get much fuel out of there unless some can flow to Tarakan.

Try to send some Helens to bomb the Allies at Prome. Flak is murderous and I lose 13 Ki-49-IIa.

Allied attack at Truk reduces forts to 2:
quote:

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 29349 troops, 499 guns, 559 vehicles, Assault Value = 1076

Defending force 20575 troops, 241 guns, 60 vehicles, Assault Value = 266

Allied engineers reduce fortifications to 2

Allied adjusted assault: 361

Japanese adjusted defense: 622

Allied assault odds: 1 to 2 (fort level 2)

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), leaders(+)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
1134 casualties reported
Squads: 13 destroyed, 29 disabled
Non Combat: 3 destroyed, 47 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 5 disabled
Guns lost 19 (11 destroyed, 8 disabled)

Allied ground losses:
816 casualties reported
Squads: 40 destroyed, 67 disabled
Non Combat: 4 destroyed, 25 disabled
Engineers: 8 destroyed, 53 disabled
Guns lost 18 (2 destroyed, 16 disabled)
Vehicles lost 22 (4 destroyed, 18 disabled)

Pagan forts reach 8. Engineers are being sent back to the Home Isles and Luzon to develop the final lines of defense. In the Marianas I am only building forts still at Tinian and Rota and there are enough engineers present.

I think they were slaughtered because there were 200+ Hellcats on CAP and only about 20 fighters escorting

They are quite a bit slower than the D4Y4 so maybe have longer engagements? Also, at the moment the IJA pilots are mostly just trained in NavB and a bit of NavS whereas the IJN pilots are mostly pre-war pilots and have much better defense and experience.

I get the impression that the game uses the same mechanism for resolving AA against ground attacks as against installation attacks. Even though the troops should be spread out across a wide area. Still, the game penalises the Allies but not allowing for effective low-level attacks by fighter-bombers so it is all just part of the game abstraction.

He has 3 of the Indian Heavy AA Regiments and one AA Brigade so that is probably a lot of guns there.
