The Great Naval Battles series!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Naval_Battles

Would love to see this concept modernized and brought up to current graphic standards. I've never played another naval combat game that provided the same "feel" of being there on the ship. Talk about immersion! They had problems integrating airpower into the later games in the series, but no reason why that couldn't be done better and integrated into the surface action.

Achtung Spitfire / Over the Reich a modern likeness in the form of Sid Meier's Ace Patrol: http://store.steampowered.com/app/244090/

Far easier to learn and control, as well.

I am guessing this thread is being followed closely by Matrix.

Steel Panthers with modern resolution and a slightly optimized UI - I would pay 40-50 $ for it on day one.

Same goes for a modern version of Great Naval Battles.

That level of variety, scale, dynamic campaigns, etc all with a nice modern UI and slightly less pixely graphics would be fantastic. The gameplay could be more or less the same, just give me something prettier to look at and throw in a few quality of life features.

I agree completely.

i have those updates - those were made by Greenius who was behind the wargamer back in 1999 but then when the company or whatever disappeared he continued working on it up to 2003 but then he just disappeared unfortunately. His updates fixed some issues but did resolve all the crash bugs nor some AI issues in the campaign tactical battles. apart from the these the game is surprisingly still installable and playable in windows 7 even which one can do though there will be inevitable crashes and some of the large battle scenarios will crash suddenly too. the most stable part is the operational campaign - one could play that for hours without crashing.

Great Naval Battles more like it, missed the fury in the Pacific. Have to run DOS though to run it.

+1 for Avalon Hill's Rise And Decline of Third Reich from me as well.

Somewhat Off Topic, hope you don't mind:

There's the Third Reich inspired TOAW scenario available, thought I'd mention that. And regarding the Avalon Hill Panzerblitz and Panzer Leader games, all the PB/PL situations have been converted to Matrix Campaign Series of the similar scale. Thought I'd mention that as well. Both not quite the real thing, but not too shabby either. IMHO of course.

Edit: link was not working.

North Atlantic '86

An astonishing achievement given that it was written in Applesoft BASIC. But among other things, it could not keep track of missiles and torpedoes aboard the ships, but had to give a ship a chance of running out of ammo each time it fired. Just think of what could be done today...

speaking of North Atlantic - also 'Action in the North Atlantic' and Action,Stations! - good like the GNB series - GNB series by the way is utterly fantastic and i recommend to all interesting in WW2 and WW1 naval battles to get it still and play it through Dosbox. if you buy the cd complete boxed set it comes with the WW1 version which was the final iteration but never released in its own right

This one is really like to see remade, http://www.tacticularcancer.com/content.php?id=4328

It is a lot better than Sid's Civilization, more realistic resources, etcs. Had to run this on older machine to play it, but the graphics is awful lol.

woot - glad to see matrix staffer even mention this one! - so far as i know only Wargamer 1813 is the game that features this battle - oh and SSI's Battles of Napoleon - one of the many extra scenarios that come bundled with it if you buy it as part of one of those SSI Wargame collections

actually i wish for all the games on the 'Definitive Wargames Collection' vol 1 to be remade - panzer battles is there, decisive battles of the civil war is there, when two worlds war is there, sword of aragon is there and Battles of Napoleon!

Avalon Hill's Bismarck. Fond memories of playing that against my brother, using advanced weather rules where weather was by square (yes, squares, not hexes!!), then getting into the naval battles on the floor of our bedroom! Great, great wargame!

I'm not sure if you're referring to the 1979 OSG board-game or not. If so, note that I converted it to a TOAW III scenario:
