Ashes to Ashes was in my 10 initially, but on reflection I do not think it belongs here - despite the "New Romantic" video. It will be in a list of some sort though - such a stonkingly good track

Bette Davies Eyes is up for inclusion - but again in a different list - same goes for Girls on Film.

There was a reason I opened with It's Still Rock and Roll to Me...

Best wishes,

One of the greatest television series of all time! It's funny, stupid, irreverent but there are many worthwhile messages...The Simpsons of course!

Are there really no other New romantic/synth pop fans from the early 80's out there?

Sorry, did not get my first cassette untill -85, and with that being Born in the USA, I am more into rock and metal than synth, so cannot help you with this list.

I will own up Warspite, plus 70's Glam too. I go to a club night in Birmingham, once a month, to dance the night away to the music we love. A friend also has a radio show, once a week, where he plays that type of music. PM me your email address and I will send you a link if your interested.

LOL - you make it sound like you are embarrassed by it!!

Birmingham is a little far away from London for a night out - be interested to hear your faves from the period though.

Well Warspite1, off the top of my head, Party Fears Two ( Associates ), Dream Soldiers ( Fallout Club ), Editions Of You ( Roxy Music), Once In A Lifetime ( Talking Heads), Life In Toyko ( Japan) Ricky's Hand ( Fad Gadget), The Black Hit Of Space ( Human League), Ero's Arriving ( Bill Nelson), 20th Century ( John Foxx) Listen To The Sirens ( Tubeway Army), plus loads of Bowie and Bolan. I could go on, and on, and on :)

My New Romantic Top Ten:

1/ Don't You Want Me - The Human League
2/ Tainted Love - Soft Cell
3/ Planet Earth - Duran Duran
4/ Vienna - Ultravox (Brilliant with John Foxx as their singer, too)
5/ Einstein A Go-Go - Landscape
6/ Fade To Grey - Visage (R.I.P Steve Strange)
7/ New Life - Depeche Mode
8/ (We Don't Need This) Fascist Groove Thang - Heaven 17
9/ Ghosts - Japan
10/ To Cut A Long Story Short - Spandau Ballet

Largely based on the impact this music had on me at the time.

Looks like Tainted Love, Fade to Grey and Vienna are - universally - the most popular. No surprise there though - brilliant tracks all three

Take on Me was an excellent pop toon and the interesting video no doubt helped its popularity.

Great band - can easily fill a top 10 with A-ha tracks.

If you like live concerts, try Yes,"SongsFrom Tsongas",their 35th anniversary concert, which I think is their best one, although there are quite a few other great concerts too.Jeff Beck live at Ronnie Scotts is a ripper, and Jeff Beck Rock'n'Roll Party concert is a nice one.Moody Blues have some pretty good concerts too.I saw Yes live in my home city,Melbourne,2003,and they played so cool!Peter.

Those of you who like synth pop might well be interested in hearing my friend and neighbour John Costello's music. He is recording an album at present. https://youtu.be/pyeRgjixEMg

Thanks for sharing! I like the synth rhythms but the synth voice kind of detracts from the piece in IMHO!

I'd definitely go and see them again for the great music - although sadly the lead singer has all the moves and dynamism of a bowl of stodgy custard......

I find it interesting that Take on Me was not a hit in UK until it was released for the third time. Changing the video was obviously a wise move.

The video was what really made that song. For its day it was cutting edge, and just the thing MTV was looking for

Robert, yes the "stupid bongo sound in the chorus" seems catchy at first then becomes quite annoying. Calling this cut (song) "brilliant" to me is a overstretch...it sounds quite ordinary to almost dull IMHO.
