The first air battle of the Western Front is that between the Belgian Air Force CR.42 and a Luftwaffe Me-109. The Germans have a +1/-1 advantage. The Allies throw first.

9 (AC) - The Stuka is cleared through
15 (AA) - The Belgian fighter aborts. Damn as soon as I saw 15 I thought that was a kill....

The next battle is west of Brussels. The odds here are +1/0 and again the Allies throw first.

5 (DX) - The Germans choose the Me-109 to be shot down (the pilot survives)
6 (DX) - The Spitfire is destroyed (the pilot survives)

That was bloody....

In China I only have two aircraft - not the three I thought as one is out of supply until the HQ moves

This gives a +1/-1 advantage to the Japanese. The Allies to throw first.

8 (-) - No Effect
10 (DC) - Essentially No Effect

Round 2

16 (AA) - The Chinese choose which aircraft to abort - and will no doubt choose the bomber.
8 (DA) - The Chinese fighter aborts.

Well that was rubbish.

To the ground strikes themselves:

The first strike - the least important of the three - results in disorganisation of both Allied units. However it is the other two I need results on!

Next to the hex west of Brussels with my best bomber. I was totally confident of success ahead of my throws given the 6-factor, but the reverse was true...

Finally to the capital itself. The Henschels are heading for the scrap yard, but this Stuka did the businees.

Two attacks announced - one in China and one in Belgium.

The attack against Brussels is 39:12 for 3:1 do the CW wish to bring in HQ Support for Gort?

I will bring in no aircraft. You can bring in one fighter - I can respond with six. Both best fighter are 5-quality - with any bombers you wish to bring in.

I believe the attack in China is also 3:1 Do you wish to use Chiang's HQ Support?

No HQ support.

The Fairey Battle (LND2) fly and give support to Brussels.

No fighter support? Either a) you are looking for the historical outcome for the poor Battle pilots or b) you are trusting to my ability to roll crap dice or c) you made a mistake (I thought I best check).

No mistake. I went for option d).

Well Option D can only be trying to wear down my Luftwaffe assets. Fortunately I still have a good number of fighters so in a bid to make the brave Battles pay for their valour, I send up a 4-quality unit.

This gives a +3/-3 advantage to the Germans. Allies as ever to throw first.

8 (AC) - No Axis bomber to clear through so no effect
11 (DC) - The Battle is cleared through

Another air battle with the advantage (this time significant) and the best result of the four has been a draw

Airfix subsequently made a kit to commemorate the brave Fairy Battle pilots that came to the defence of the Belgian capital in the summer of 1940.

That is what you get for sending up a bomber trying to do a fighters job.

I miss those days when I had just bought a new model. Being in the store trying to select which one to buy was close to impossible. So many one wanted to buy and the best were out of my prize range.

And when one had bought a model there was pure joy as one opened it and looked at all the parts it contained.

The 2-points are just enough to make it 2:1 although I am likely to get it back to 3:1 with Fractional Odds. There is a +2 modifier for the disorganisation....

...8(10). The capital is, at least temporarily, taken back.

No no no - its a Zerstorer, a heavy fighter, so that's even better right?... Hermann swears by them... or at least he will be swearing at them now.

Meanwhile in China the odds are 3:1 and with another point added by the Japanese bomber unit, I am hoping Fractional Odds will bring this to 4:1. There are no modifiers. I assume the Assault table on the basis that the Chinese cannot retreat?

Agreed - so long as the losses are not too heavy, I will always take the land combat attack over the air.

Indeed. Assault.

And do remember that you are allowed to roll a one... nay, encouraged to roll a one. A one is after all the first number on the die and that must be good.

Fortunately the Fractional Odds did work because the throw was a 6 - and at 3:1 that would not have been good enough. The Japanese are all disorganised but I cannot regret using my HQ as I would not, in hindsight, have got the 4:1 that throw of 6 required.

Chiang is destroyed as unable to retreat (I converted a Shattered to Retreat for this purpose).

The Germans and Japanese have no aircraft left to re-base. The Italians re-base a fighter to North Africa.

I have little choice but to use Umezu to re-organise three units in China and von Leeb to bring another fighter back into the fray.

And so ends the impulse.

No declarations of war.

CW and France take combined impulses.

No Port Strikes. No naval air.

France send a fleet to the Western Mediterranean while CW send a fleet to the Eastern Med. CW send a couple of transport to the North Sea where they load a infantry and a AT.

France search for the Italian forces in the Western Med. Will Italy activate their submarines?

The French rolled a '5' and do not find the Italians. The Italians, however, roll a '1' and therefore has the option to select what Allied box they want to fight.

Or, later on, they can select to use surprise points to avoid combat if they want.
