Thank you both.

Fixed the ships entering the game with "future" upgrades - to fix the Oyoda class issue I created a new Oyoda without radar which will be the 1941 version that upgrades to the radar equipped version in 2/43.

RAAF No.23 squadron turned out be a re-size issue - for some reason the squadron was re-sizing to 72 planes in the middle of 42. Fixed as well.

Huge amount of work paradigmblue, thank you for the effort.

I loaded it up yesterday and the sheer number of units is intimidating. Probably will take a few days just to get through the first couple of days alone!

As a Canadian I would love to see some additional assets tasked to the Pacific by the RCN that could be used to help supply Alaska and the Aleutian's (KV's, DD's, AK's, AP's). I have in the past in my own DB fiddling added in older RN and USN units that were scrapped in 37-39, a couple of Cruisers and some DD's, to add some punch.

Great work, I am looking forward to playing with the French assets you have added.

I'm wary of adding too many more units simply because at some point I have to draw a line in the sand and say that the mod is "feature complete", so that those playing it don't have to continually update or start over - I need to focus on balance and fixing the many bugs that are inevitable when entering thousands of new entries by hand to the editor. However, if you have a good source for what additional assets would be plausible, I'd be happy to take a look and see if they make sense for the mod.

Excellent news...

C-C and I have stopped our game, and we will both be looking at the new improved version as we both want to take the game a lot further.

I think we really got a taste for it, and also caught a few things to make the mod even better.

I really want to see a toned down Japanese Industry so that there is pressure to grab oil, and also not have so much resources on the HI. For JFB, managing the economy is a lot of the fun (yeah, we are that crazy) Also this gives the Allies a pressure point to attack.

Also looking forward to the oil in Prudhoe...

Plus better Allied fighters initially

One thing not brought up in this thread, but is interesting is the idea of activating Russia initially, with perhaps a HR that Japan has to start hostilities until the Manchuko garrison level is broken or normal 1945 activation. This would allow the Allies to move Russian units and avoid a catastrophic surprise attack in 1942. I also firmly believe that another HR is needed, and that of only Russian troops in Russian bases (unless perhaps Japan has achieved a major victory).

Plus all the other changes in it!!!

Hey guys. The russians are fun to play with. Para and I have just started a new test game. He has already attacked 3 russian divisions with aircraft. Watch out Para "the Russians are coming". Good idea about the house rule Lowpe....GP

Since you stated that it uses AndyMacs Iron man scripts I thought I might give it a try solitaire.

I'm currently solitaire testing BTS which doesn't have AndyMac's aggressive AI scripts.

However, I am loathe to play w/o stacking limits.

Can I substitute the stacking limit and gnarly Asian roads pwhexe files and make this scenario work?

edit: after reading the intro to your AAR I see you have altered a lot of base and industry so I presume I can't play it with stacking limits and will need to use your custom pwhexe files.

Please consider a version with stacking limits. Death star bases make the game too unrealistic.

Hi Hans, the pwhexe file from the dababes extended map with stacking limits should work just fine - I used the dababes extended pwhexe file without stacking limits, but did not edit the pwhexe file itself at all. Let me know either way so I can look into it.

Just found out the French 25mm AA is static. As it's part of the 18 FF Chaussers Bn (sp?), that's probably not intentional.

Started a game against the AI w/o stacking limits (will have to see if changing the pwhese file will work).

The AI bombed Russia on Dec. 7th.

First time I have ever gotten to play with the Russians!

However, the AI doesn't seem to be organizing a ground game against the Russians nor is it covering it's own assets from Russian attack.

Toyahara has no air cover.

I'm resisting the temptation to bomb the aircraft factories into oblivion.

You'll find a game vs the AI disappointing. It suffers from the same weaknesses as stock AI, and despite the huge size of the Japanese navy, it can be taken apart piece by piece without too much effort.

I invested the better part of last weekend getting it through the first 4 turns.

Hans: I think Paradigm has pretty consistently recommended against playing against the AI. I'm playing it to find bugs, and hell, it's fun with all of those French goodies.

Paradigm: Off memory, in mid-May 1943 the French replacement pilot level is a bit higher than 100. It's about 600 for the Dutch, and seems right for all the others. I can take a screenshot if that would help in the next day or two. My point is it's relatively low considering the forces they have compared to others.

I'm playing a game where I had the AI fight AI until early April 1943 before I took over as Allies. Oz had zero, yes zero, fuel at that point. It takes about a month to reorganize shipping.

One tiny point: I was wondering if you had considered adding a few French corvettes in the beginning. Lack of small escorts is a big problem early on for the Allies.

Cheers,
CC

I've been playing the AI since Uncommon Valor days and know fully well its limitations even on steroids as in AndyMacs scenarios which this is based on.

What bothers me is having the AI bomb Russia on the first turn with no follow up scripts to implement a campaign against the Russians.

I've played BTS into late August '43, which doesn't have AndyMacs AI scripts knowing fully well the game wouldn't be even close to competitive simply for the fun of playing with all the new toys.

This scenario has even more toys and would be fun to play if the AI didn't commit seppuku on the opening turn.

I'm sorry if you feel mislead Hans.

The mod does use AndyMac's AI from his Ironman scenario, but lets be honest - Ironman is very beatable, in fact last time I played vs AI on Ironman I had sunk most of Japan's carriers by mid 1942, as well as the vast majority of it's shipping. When you add all the allied toys to the mix, it gets even easier.

As far as Russia, if you set Active Soviets to "Off" in the editor, the AI will not attack the Soviet Union.

That is a lower pilot replacement number than it should be for the French - I'll take a look.

There are already a buch of French KVs in the game, but I agree with your sentiment that the allies are woefully short on escorts early game. I've been talking with cdnice about some solutions involving US destroyers that were decommissioned in the late 30s in Canadian service. I should have something ironed out this weekend.

If only I could.

The 64 bit editor refuses to open on my 32 bit system.

Looks like your scenario is off limits for me.

And BTW any game against the AI is very beatable even AndyMacs Ironman Nasty Nasty.

That doesn't stop those of us who have no means to play PBEM from enjoying playing them.

Why do solitaire players always get treated like second class citizens by the PBEM crowd?

I think you answered your own question - if Ironman Nasty Nasty, - which is the hardest vs AI scenario that I know of, and is programmed by the most talented AI scripter in the community, - can be beat easily, I'm not sure what I can do to make the AI challenging enough for you.

I myself just started playing PBEM with the development of Focus Pacific, and had always played solitaire games. I came to the realization that if I could easily beat the hardest scenarios on the hardest difficulty setting that the only way I was going to get a real challenge was if I played vs an actual person. I don't know about you, but after 1942 in any vs AI game I've played, I've bled the AI so badly that continuing the game seems like kicking a puppy.

Hans, I wish I could program an AI script that would challenge you and create a fantastic solitaire experience - I certainly would if I felt I had the ability. But when AndyMac can't do it (and his scenarios are great, don't get me wrong!), it's not a matter of will but the simple fact that the scripted WitP:AE AI does not have the capability to present a challenge in the long term to a human player.

If you'd like, I'll add a version of the mod to the website that does not have active Soviets. That will ensure that AndyMac's Ironman AI will not start a fight that it can't win vs the Russians.

Sorry if I came across too strongly.

I'm not looking for nor expecting anyone to create a competitive Ai for me.

I simply gravitate to the scenarios that have the promise of the best possible AI (produced by AndyMac).

I too have quit many games in the fall of '42 because I had already trashed the AI.

I have learned restraint and my current game play testing BTs for John III is in August '43 with a promise to last at least a bit longer.

I enjoy play testing and providing feedback. Early on I was the one player providing the most feedback to AnyMac on his IronMan series.

I believe my feedback has been beneficial to John III's efforts on his BTS scenario.

If can do me the favor of creating a version with an inactive Russia I'll be happy to play and provide feedback even though I know you are not seeking to tailor the scenario to solitaire play.

Hi Hans,
Yeah, in my humble opinion, if you sink too many IJN ships, or knock off too many air units or LCU's, later in the game it can't figure out how to defend itself. I took two AI games into mid 44, back when I first started the AE version, and got so fed up I stopped playing for a few months. This was back in 2009 or 10. Then I saw a post by Andy about his AI mods and then the Nasty and tried them. This was better. But I was missing something. I started to read AAR's and then Last year connected with JuanG. We both have been helping John3rd with his mods,Juan more than me, and we started a PBEM with John's mods. RA first and BTS second. I haven't looked back. I know from previous posts that you can't do a PBEM because of internet connections or something, but Last year I was doing my turns from a McDonalds. Mostly to get out of my bothers house, I was living with his family at the time, The connection sucks, but it was free. And I had my cup of tea too Just a thought.....GP

By the way, Everyone here started out as an AI player at some point. Oh, I looked at the AI scripts once and they look fairly easy to put in. The problem is putting them in so they work correctly. Thats where Andy comes in

Thanks for the support GP and the encouragement to give PBEM a try no matter the difficulties.

I played Uncommon Valor PBEM and even head to head which was possible because of the smaller scale.

The lack of an internet connection at home is only one hindrance.

I beta tested Command Ops Battles from The Bulge and wrote an AAR that is still stickied at the top of eth AAR forum there all while relying on my work connection for uploading.

The real thing holding me back from playing PBEM is that I would in no way be able to be consistent with turn around on a daily basis.

I'm usually so mentally wiped out after work I can't even consider trying to play a turn that night.

Most of my gaming takes place on the weekend in marathon sessions.

This kind of a play schedule is not conducive to PBEM play and I have never bothered to look for an opponent who would accept that kind of a schedule.

ps. I was also a beta tester for Avalon Hill's classic board game Advanced Third Reich.

Best tactical game engine with the best AI I have ever encountered.

Unfortunately I don't find much time to play it anymore.

I have always been partial to grand strategic and operational mega-games.

I've owned and played almost all of the classic mega board games such as Wacht am Rhein, Highway to the Reich, DNO, Fire in the East, Scorched Earth, The longest Day and I own all but one of the Europa Series.

I think the only notable mega board game I never played was Campaign for North Africa.

I had a lot of those games at some point, including the Campaign for North Africa beast. I've had too many moves in the meantime. I just rescued Pacific War from Victory Games, the last of my boxed games, out of my storage area as I shut it down, but I opened it up here and discovered it had no counters.

Cheers,
CC

Any chance soon for a version with an inactive Russia?

I've gone back to my BTS game while I wait.

Sorry Hans, I should have something for you soon - I've been absolutely swamped by work these past two weeks, and haven't had the chance to get to the mod.

I'm crossing my fingers that this Sunday after I get back from work I'll have a window of time to get something to you.
