Please explain to me how the sprite ratio option actually works. The manual is kind of vague.

The default for infantry is 1 sprite represents 6 actual soldiers. On the options page you can adjust this from 1:1 up to 1:19. There is a limit of 200 sprites per battalion independent of the sprite ratio. Unit frontages will also not adjust correctly with the sprite ratio setting. This is included mostly for people who want to play very large engagements.

If anyone can expand on this for us slow people: Would going 1:10 improve graphics performance for those of us who don't need to see lots of soldier figures? Also, I would think a higher ratio would reduce formation/movement display issues that some have observed.

So Jim, to get historically correct unit frontages should you keep the ratio at the default 1:6 setting?

In this thread from the developer's forum...a person on the team seems to indicate that more sprites on the screen would lead to more overlap possibilities. So assuming that is correct, it would seem overlap would decrease as you increase the number of soldiers per sprite. Now how much overlap it reduces, don't know. Maybe bump up to the highest setting of 19 and see if any difference noticed.

I tried 19 and it shows so few troops it looks more like a miniatures game. I'm sticking to 0.

Someone can correct me, but the setting basically determines how many soldiers are represented by a single sprite graphic. So based on all the setting options, you would have the following.

** regardless of setting, I believe the maximum sprites that can be shown is 200.

0 = 1 Sprite represents 6 Soldiers (default setting, same as 1:6)
1 = 1 Sprite represents 1 Soldier
2 = 1 Sprite represents 2 Soldiers
3 = 1 Sprite represents 3 Soldiers
4 = 1 Sprite represents 4 Soldiers
5 = 1 Sprite represents 5 Soldiers
6 = 1 Sprite represents 6 Soldiers
7 = 1 Sprite represents 7 Soldiers
8 = 1 Sprite represents 8 Soldiers
9 = 1 Sprite represents 9 Soldiers
10 = 1 Sprite represents 10 Soldiers
11 = 1 Sprite represents 11 Soldiers
12 = 1 Sprite represents 12 Soldiers
13 = 1 Sprite represents 13 Soldiers

Makes sense, and surely was discussed-to-death in SoWG forums. d'Erlon's Division would feature 170 sprites at 1:10 (without counting) and that seems plenty to me.

Grim.R has it exactly correct. Note however that there is a hard limit of 200 sprites per infantry battalion irrespective on sprite ratio setting or unit strength.
