First attack at PH. Not a good result for my poor troops.

quote:

Ground combat at Pearl Harbor (180,107)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 78094 troops, 689 guns, 480 vehicles, Assault Value = 2461

Defending force 55872 troops, 801 guns, 538 vehicles, Assault Value = 695

Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 2

Japanese adjusted assault: 1499

Allied adjusted defense: 2601

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 2 (fort level 2)

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), forts(+), leaders(+), experience(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
4987 casualties reported
Squads: 16 destroyed, 389 disabled
Non Combat: 5 destroyed, 52 disabled
Engineers: 7 destroyed, 58 disabled
Vehicles lost 55 (2 destroyed, 53 disabled)

Allied ground losses:
2820 casualties reported
Squads: 10 destroyed, 151 disabled
Non Combat: 6 destroyed, 107 disabled
Engineers: 3 destroyed, 72 disabled
Guns lost 80 (5 destroyed, 75 disabled)
Vehicles lost 35 (4 destroyed, 31 disabled)

Can´t really complain though. Looks like I got a really good adjusted AV. Simply too many Japs and too few defenders. I guess Nick will rest for 6-7 days before attacking again. After that attack it will be over quickly...so mid February.

That plus you have the start-of-war squads for the USA defenders (and likely no USMC there at all). If these were '43 or '44 squads the firepower ratio would be very different.

Yeah. If I could just warp in two USMC 44 IDs and I could hold it forever!

Got the turn from Nick!

------------------------
Pacific
------------------------

Nothing to report besides the PH attack.

------------------------
DEI
------------------------

Sargo attacks a big TK twice. 8 torpedoes launch in total. All misses and a dud! Dang. Nick is now moving freely in the Java sea.

Big scare. Luckily only bombs!

quote:

Morning Air attack on TF, near Babar at 76,117

Weather in hex: Heavy cloud

Raid spotted at 4 NM, estimated altitude 11,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 1 minutes

Japanese aircraft
G4M1 Betty x 20

No Japanese losses

Allied Ships
CL Boise
CA Chicago
CL Marblehead
CA Chester

Aircraft Attacking:
20 x G4M1 Betty bombing from 10000 feet *
Naval Attack: 2 x 250 kg SAP Bomb

I´ve been lurking with the TF 8 hexes south of Ambon waiting for the inevitable attack. No luck though. Nick might have spotted them without me knowing it. Time to pull out now...

Nick also spots my DD TF lurking behind Java. Or...not lurking. Desperately trying to refuel more like it. Might have to give up and send them to OZ.

------------------------
China
------------------------

Not much happening. Almost two full IDs move into the mountain hex North of Ichang.

quote:

Ground combat at 82,46 (near Patung)

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 8929 troops, 73 guns, 3 vehicles, Assault Value = 695

Defending force 31065 troops, 208 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 797

Japanese ground losses:
20 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Assaulting units:
39th/C Division
13th/A Division
39th/A Division
13th/B Division
13th/C Division

Defending units:
68th Chinese Corps
2nd Chinese Corps
67th Chinese Corps
1st Chinese Cavalry Corps

This is not enough for him to kick me out. Good news! Looks like I plugged the hole for now. I´ll enjoy it while it lasts. Japanese AF is really taking an interest to the roadblock leading up to Sian. I have reserves in place but not much. I´ll see if I can free up something somewhere. Most likely not!

As long as you hold the fuel points Joc, you should be able to squeeze long life out of China!! Nice line formed. Might I suggest having a couple of corps dig in the rocks that have a road? The hex three steps northwest of Sian for example...

I´m not sure about that. Don´t dare light even the slightest glimmer of hope regarding China. Supply is dwindling already...and once its out all my units will become useless.

Its a good idea to start digging in but I don´t have any troops to spare. Everything is currently committed. I have a 250 AV Corp in reserve at Lanchow. That is it!

In my next allied game I will be tempted to abandon china and move all China units to India.

Jocke,

If you can sneak an avd onto a undeveloped island around the celebes sea later u can fly in a pby. Jp recon will not pickup the ship in a zero port unless he target recons the hex. Then use urdestroyers to disrupt his transports. Hard for the betties to hit a 35 speed ship.

I´ve tried moving in two AVPs (don´t have any available AVDs) but both were sunk by Nells before they could reach their destination. Just too slow

Gah. Finished the turn early this morning. But somehow forgot to send it to Nick so it has been sitting as a draft in my inbox all day...Also forgot to save a screenshot and I´m too lazy to fix a new one!

------------------------
Pacific
------------------------

Nick unloads more stuff a PH and loses 3-4 small xAKLs in the process. KB attacks the troops again. 4 Kates and a Val is lost.

------------------------
DEI
------------------------

Poor Astoria sink only 2 days from CT. During the replay I get a "major flooding" MSG and glugg glugg she goes . That increases the losses from my CV strike to 1 CV, 3 CAs and 2 DDs. The gain was a 2, possibly 3 week delay on Java for him. I think it may have been worth it.

Last defenders on Sumatra surrender.

Only one turn yesterday.

------------------------
Pacific
------------------------

Japanese BBs bombard PH causing a tremendous amount of damage.

quote:

Night Naval bombardment of Pearl Harbor at 180,107 - Coastal Guns Fire Back!

3 Coastal gun shots fired in defense.

Japanese Ships
BB Hyuga
BB Ise
BB Yamashiro

Allied Ships
PT-35, Shell hits 1, heavy damage
SS Gato, hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
PT-22, Shell hits 1, heavy damage

Allied ground losses:
978 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 22 destroyed, 64 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 7 disabled
Guns lost 16 (4 destroyed, 12 disabled)
Vehicles lost 12 (5 destroyed, 7 disabled)

Gato sinks during the day. AI us hurting me here as it auto disbands any sub damaged in the area. The subs is then stuck for 3 days in the yard before I can get it out. Going to have to pull the subs soon. I´ll relocate them to NORPAC and OZ.

KB makes another attack. 6 Kates and 2 Vals lost.

------------------------
DEI
------------------------

Nick manages to sneak a TF into the Indian Ocean and land undetected on Cocos. Dang. Its time to leave now as he will have Nav seach up and running shortly.

Dutch air force launches for the last time in the war. No hits scored. What few planes are left are disbanded creating 2 small groups. They are now all that remains of the Dutch air force. The Brit and NZ squadrons leave for OZ. Last remaining US Catalinas leave for Ceylon to bolster NavSearch in the IO.

My favorite sub Trusty gets into position in the Malaccas. Results are instant!

quote:

Sub attack near Sabang at 45,70

Japanese Ships
xAK Asakasan Maru, Torpedo hits 1
xAK Atutasan Maru

Allied Ships
SS Trusty

SS Trusty launches 2 torpedoes at xAK Asakasan Maru
Trusty diving deep ....

Allied Ships

Looks like a supply TF headed for Rangoon.

The S-36 also nails a ship close to Balikpapan.

quote:

Sub attack near Donggala at 67,97

Japanese Ships
xAK Hokumai Maru, Torpedo hits 1, heavy damage
PB Shosei Maru

Allied Ships
SS S-36

------------------------
China
------------------------

Movement has stopped in the North. Sending recon there to make sure he isn´t trying to flank around to the North. Also starting to see some movement in the eastern flank.

Nick continues to pound the roadblock towards Sian. This might be his next push.

Allied Shiplosses
______________________________________________________________________________

Obviously poor Lex stands out on the list. She was lost in the same fashion as Warspite. Detached to an escort TF with a lone DD as escort after taking a single TT she was then hit with an additional 3 TTs.

Overall Allied losses so far are very light. The PH BBs doesn´t bother me much. Too slow and drink too much fuel. The 3 CAs hurt but they were lost for a good cause (protecting Lex and Ent). DDs losses have been a pleasant surprise. 13 Allied lost vs 9 Japanese.

I won´t post the Japanese list as its riddled with inaccuracies. For instance Kaga as well as 2 BBs are listed as sunk which they arn´t. Also 3 CAs listed which havn´t been sunk either.

Air War
______________________________________________________________________________

Nick is driving his air force hard! I guess in a SCEN 2 environment he can afford it. I would say very close to 40-50% of his losses have been over PH.

All the Vals and most of the Kates are from the KB. Hopefully some good pilots were lost in the process.

Ouff, suffering from the "no turn to do syndrome"

Did everything I could in the kitchen until the actual kitchen comes tomorrow. Had hoped to spend the day flipping some turns but Nick is busy and forum activity is really low today.

Eye twitching is how it starts. Then hands start shaking, sometimes following by vomiting and in rare cases uncontrollable flagelence or a condition known as hot dog finger.

It's called PTWS - Post Turn WITP Syndrome

Impressive that you downed mostly his good (for this period) aircraft while losing mostly your oldest/least valuable ..... until we get to the PBY-5s. Ouch!
Do you have enough of the older PBY-4s to fill the gap? Also not sure when the PBY-5a starts arriving.

Cat-4 pool is empty I´m afraid. Cat-5 and Cat-5A are already rolling off the line with 8 and 9 per month. Will take 6-8 months before my squadrons are back at full strength.

This is somewhat mitigated by the fact that I don´t have a long supply line in CENT/SOPAC to cover though.

Of course I am worried. I just try not to think about it too much! Its a fun and interesting opening and I´m really curious to see what Nick will do next!

China is what it is. You can´t really do anything about is as the allies. You can be the best AE player in the world but if the Japanese player wants China he will get it. So I just try my best. If I can avoid a total collapse until 4/42 I´ll consider it an allied victory.

The queen is currently ferrying a third of the 27th ID to SOPAC. I have yet to decide where I´ll dump them though. Le Triumphant is part of a US/OZ/NZ TF trying to find prey in the Solomons. Have to pull out though as I was hit with a 7/7 DL last turn. Dang.

Overall I´m having a lot of fun with this game. Nicks aggressive start allows for a bit of allied fun to balance out the incredible depressing first months of the war.

I agree China is a huge mess, but everyone seems to want to rationalize and build lines of defence in good terrain, which gives the IJA clear targets to concentrate on.
I have been thinking (after hints from Alfred) that maybe the key to China is not to clean up the mess but to make it worse! The Chinese advantage is huge numbers of units and relatively low supply requirements for their low-tech units. Perhaps the war of maneuver that Alfred suggested is a guerilla war, where Chinese units scatter shotgun-style everywhere - so many places the IJA cannot concentrate to hit them all.

Go after every rail and road junction in the south, take every undefended town and airfield, find isolated IJA units and surround them before they can bring up help. Unit get destroyed? When they re-spawn just send them back into the fray in the south. It will be chaotic and bloody but a lot of fun and may give Nick fits!

I think Alfreds lack of PBEM experience is showing at times. While something like that might work against the AI doing it against a human would be a short lived affair. A scattered Chinese army can neither defend them self nor be a threat against even lightly guarded Japanese location. Not to mention the fact that the Japanese can move way faster then any Chinese units using better interior lines.

All the Japanese would have to do is to let loose the air force and defend a few key position while they cut the main Chinese artery (Lanchow-Chungking). By the time the Chinese closed on anything important they would have been reduced to rubble from the air, completely out of supply and unable to overcome even the smallest Japanese garrison.

It would certainly be fun to watch something like that but it would fail miserably.

Kilgore C. Its the starting commander. Can´t see his stats while at sea but I think he had really good Naval and decent aggression.

In my game vs. Erik Trusty sank more then any other allied sub by a big margin. Love that sub. Sadly she was sunk by ASW air (as 90% of my allied subs) late in the war.
