I my experience naval bombardments of non-base coastal hexes either don't launch or result in very little damage. I think the LCU is mode-knocked, but not sure.

Erik made it work with really good results in Western OZ. Blasted away with Yamato and friends when I was walking up the coast from Geraldtown to Carnavorn (?) Even had CD guns with me but a couple of bombardments and my IDs were showing 80-99 in disruption.

I think it's vital that you capitalize on your naval control of the Thai/Vietnamese coast. Any Allied units that wander into a coastal hex should be subjected to bombardment by the heaviest ships you can gather.

In terms of actual losses, I'd imagine that shells landing in the mostly jungle hexes won't register much in terms of losses.

In terms of disruption, it may do a great deal. Plus, it's a good way to buy time - the disruption/morale loss has to be remedied before the units can return to action, that that earns time, and it's time Lowpe needs right now.

I haven't even been able to set the target for a naval bombardment, so I'm not sure you can do it at all. I must not be doing it right.

April 17th, 1944

No night bombing. Not much bombing over Honshu. Overall we drop 31 Allied planes for 17 Japanese. Some miscellaneous shore bombardments, including Hachinohe which suffers much less damage this time.

Bangkok retreat is going well, far better than the carnage I expected - but it isn't over yet. All major divisions will make it back to the jungle and Battambang. Some support troops might get caught depending upon Allied aggressiveness.

We hold once again in the jungle east of Ayuthia, but the Allies have reinforced with more tank units. The 2nd Tank division will arrive there tomorrow...we shall see what happens.

During the night I-18 sinks an AM. Trinkat finally falls (I had been airlifting troops out steadily this past month. They held sink Nov of 1943, removing 2 chindits and 1 american paratroop unit from other pursuits for all that time. Three cheers for the brave defenders of Trinkat!

Darn! Just accidentally clicked into your AAR. I knew it was going to happen sooner or later. I clicked out before the page finished loading so no harm.

Turn here is done and away. I put some LRCAP up over the 2nd Tank, they might survive a spitfire sweep or two to nail the assault bombers, I hope.

I am picking up the excellent Iwo CD guns and moving them back to the HI. Iwo is at stacking limit, I given Allied past operations, I don't see him invading here but rather bypassing.

Another big day around Bangkok, very real chance the defence melts. All depends upon the 2nd Tank Division and of course the Allies.

Don´t worry about it! I´ve done that a lot of times too and will probably do it again. "Why the hell have Erik posted in my AAR?! Wait a minute...crap!"

No night bombing.

No dogfights for the first time ever over Honshu since the Hokkaido invasion. Oscar squadrons almost refilled, Tony pretty shattered, Frank slightly weakening, Jack growing, Zeke growing, Nick growing. But none growing fast enough.

Over in Bangkok, 4 units are wiped out in the plains south of Bangkok: two static HQ from Bangkok (RTA), the shattered 3rd RTA Division; and one AA unit. 2nd Tank Division makes the jungle road to the east of Ayuthia, and the 1st Tank Division will in the Jungle Rough road hex north of Battambang that leads to the plains of Thailand.

Allies lose 30 planes, Japan 6.

Well, there was a lot of Judy and Jill spottings of American Subs near Luzon/Formosa. I wonder if he will think it is the KB.

The Lorna squadron is up to 8 planes, and is now based on Formosa. I have set them to fly at 4K, normally my ASW is at 1-2K. Just playing around with it really. In real life the Lorna was fitted with air brakes of some kind, and actually dive bombed Submarines with bombs and depth charges. They suffered high losses patrolling convoy routes whenever Allied fighters showed up. I plan on grounding them before that happens, I hope.

Turn is away, and the Allies are on the march everywhere. Relentless forward pressure, met by weakening Japanese forces. 60 days for the big IJAAF base force upgrade (20mm AA or is it 25mm?), and 90 days for the big 8cm to 12 cm upgrade for AA units. That one will be good!

The war is going badly, and it starts off with the invasion of Paramushiro. I wonder at the Allies methodical conquest of the Kuriles.

Anyhow, there are some solid guns there and actually a little bit of decent troops. And supply. And a functioning port. Lookout! Japan is going to show that they still have some teeth.

We maul 3 destroyers and damage a CL, and the Pennsylvania with several nice hits on the superstructure that start fires -- most hits bounce. Still, in the overall scheme of things pretty trivial.

Even during the darkest days, Obvert told me there would be days like today. Little victories that make you a happy JFB. Continue perusing the AAR dear reader and you will be thrilled (to a little degree) - your secret JFB hearts will go a twitter.

A hunter killer group, vectored in by decent search during the night, puts a few home on the Allied subs. But, I think we can do better than this today to make a JFB smile.

Tokyo, a nasty morning, with severe storms. The sirens go off signalling another air raid. The first in several days.

The Japanese fighter pilots rush to their planes, perhaps there is an extra spring in their step today, since they have enjoyed a few days respite.

Countering the initial sweeps are the George and Frank. For whatever reason the J2M3s are holding back, not engaging, perhaps biding their time. What does the ground control anticipate?

We traded fighter for fighter against Hellcats, Spitfires, Mustangs, and Jugs. Oh my! But it gets better because fighter sweeps are followed by...

Bombers. Wave after wave. Franks and Georges manage to stay in the skies, the mechanics had put the planes back in top shape after several days off and the fighter pilots are rewarded.

Some waves have escorts, others don't, but they keep coming. Here a Ventura erupts into a fireball. There a SBD is blown apart. Everywhere, Allied planes are going down, the Wildcats are especially vulnerable as they try to keep formation and protect the bombers.

Silly Allied pilots, don't they know the brave are the first to die?

It is a brutal day for Allied pilots over Tokyo. Eventually the CAP wears out, but then the heaviest concentration of flak in the Empire takes over. The 4E beasties make their runs without fighter opposition, but manpower hits are small, less than 3000 fires. But the runway takes a beating, 69% degraded. More hapless Irvings destroyed on the ground.

He has to be running low on Spits, almost the entire squadron wiped out. All the Hellcat sweepers went down too. This is perhaps my best day in the air ever.

A couple of hapless engineering units, and a few AA get mauled in the open ground north of Battambang, but for the most part the troops are in position to hold again. 40 Non combat squads are destroyed, but a small price to pay.

It will definitely be tricky here, and I will need a decent break plus a little time to extricate everything, but every day bought here means the first Vinh/Vientiane/Battambang line gets stronger.

The way to collapse this line is to cross the river due east of Ayuthia, follow the railroad tracks into the open and let lose the tanks. It would go pretty fast considering the rail line thru the jungle. That would allow the cutting off of the JR road hex and the Jungle hex. The central plains would be wide open -- a tankers dream!

28% Moonlight, and the boats are hastily assembled, the crews appear miraculously. The leaders aggressive and skilled. Inspiring even.

This could be a little surprise I think.

Give them a little night naval search and it could be pretty sweet.

No doubt, it is walking on the edge of a knife to say the least. Understanding the super highways is important in crafting the defence. Also understanding route paths, and buying just a little extra time.

The 14th Div at Uttaradit is a scant 6 miles for the jungle road and then back to Udon Thanai. I will hold Uttaradit with a regiment since that ties down a full division. The retreat from Battambang poses retreat problems possibly.

It will be interesting and deadly I am sure.

He lost more fighters than me. Not shown on the list are a few Lightnings downed of two styles.

All the other planes shot down are VP bonus and pilot degradation.

Turn is away, looking for a good day at Etorofu with the speed boats. I will take anything positive in VPs. I have had good luck with the slower mtb, and I think he isn't expecting them at all.

Nobody tell him!

In Bangkok, lets see where he is going.

Singapore is buffing up: forts should be 4 by the time he comes. Rushing some 15cm art there to counter his tanks, but all the units will be fairly small so it probably won't last long...but then again I am not sure with about how much he is coming with 500 AV and Tanks? If I can counter the tanks, I can hold...hence the artillery.

Also Singers might be easier for me to get a bombardment in early on.
