China is about to come crashing down.

------------------------
NORPAC
------------------------

Nothing here which is good news for me. KB still sits at Coal Harbor.

------------------------
India
------------------------

88.500 troops and 46 units at Chittagong now! This could turn interesting in a month or two. I have an idea...

------------------------
China
------------------------

Last defenders of Ankang is about to crumble under armor attacks. Supply is gone. Trying to save the 66th Corps which is now up to 60 EXP. Don´t think the will make it out in time though. Most likely the position will fall tomorrow. Only have two Corps left to defend in the position behind them. But what little supply they have will burn up by the overstack the retreat will cause.

Very good day in the air. Not so much on the ground!

------------------------
NORPAC
------------------------

Japanese try to bomb Bremerton again. Its one of the locations I´ve "given" him. 1 point of repair yard damage.

2 KVs fleeing Vancouver finds a Japanese sub and nails it.

quote:

Sub attack near Victoria at 208,51

Japanese Ships
SS I-7, hits 4, heavy damage

Allied Ships
KV Vancouver
KV Dundas

------------------------
India
------------------------

Jeff suddenly tries to subdue the defenders of Calcutta. It doesn´t end well for him as the RAF does superbly getting in among the bombers after the initial sweep. Weather also helped!

quote:

Morning Air attack on Calcutta , at 52,37

Weather in hex: Thunderstorms

Raid detected at 40 NM, estimated altitude 16,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 12 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 12
Ki-21-IIa Sally x 8
Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 17
Ki-48-Ib Lily x 21

Allied aircraft
H81-A3 x 12
Hurricane IIa Trop x 21
Hurricane IIb Trop x 24

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-21-IIa Sally: 4 destroyed
Ki-43-Ic Oscar: 2 destroyed
Ki-48-Ib Lily: 11 destroyed

Another bombing attempt breaks through but only a lone bomb lands on the airfield. A good day.

------------------------
China
------------------------

No good news without bad. The Ankang road collapses as expected. Losses in the retreat are lighter then expected though which is good.

quote:

Ground combat at 83,45 (near Nanyang)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 39825 troops, 471 guns, 291 vehicles, Assault Value = 1159

Defending force 33144 troops, 221 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 306

Japanese adjusted assault: 819

Allied adjusted defense: 403

Japanese assault odds: 2 to 1

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), disruption(-), experience(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
448 casualties reported
Squads: 4 destroyed, 41 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 7 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 3 disabled
Vehicles lost 16 (4 destroyed, 12 disabled)

Allied ground losses:
7924 casualties reported
Squads: 344 destroyed, 5 disabled
Non Combat: 298 destroyed, 10 disabled
Engineers: 10 destroyed, 3 disabled
Guns lost 13 (9 destroyed, 4 disabled)
Units retreated 4

The road to Ankang and the Chungking plains are now open. Since Lowpe took over he has ground down 12 full Chinese corps. Dug in and in x3 terrain there is simply no stopping the Japanese as they can grind down troops faster then the allies could ever recover them.

I might be able to squeeze a month more out of China but then its over. Full collapse in June to mid July. Still 2 months better then I thought!

Not much activity.

------------------------
NORPAC
------------------------

Some unescorted Nells take off in bad weather to hit Oak Harbor for no damage. KB remains at Coal Harbor to provide CAP. Allied strength in the US and Canada grows for every day.

We now have 350 well trained fighters stationed mainly at Seattle and SF. AA units are protecting most targets in northern US. 110 B17s are waiting for the right opportunity.

------------------------
China
------------------------

Japanese bombers shift to Sian causing almost 800 casualties (this is why you stay out of clear hexes). The entire Sian/Lanchow area will soon be cut off. I´ve decided to let the troops stay and fight in the hopes they will damage the industry. By our HR I can´t strat bomb in China so once he captures it it will be safe. If much is damaged in the capture he will at least have to pay to rebuild it.

------------------------
India
------------------------

Japanese start moving out of Chittagong. 46 units and 88k troops. While I think I can hold them at Comilla I don´t dare take a gamble on it. For now I´ll pull back to the east to try and buy the troops fleeing Burma a chance to get out. Eventually I´ll pull back to the level 6 forts at Calcutta.

This is where the allies will fight back. Counterattack will come in about 3-5 weeks.

A nice surprise.

------------------------
NORPAC

Parts of the 21st Japanese ID continues to hit a wall at Skagway where the 297 Infantry battalion holds the fort.

quote:

Ground combat at Skagway (191,35)

Attacking force 4009 troops, 36 guns, 2 vehicles, Assault Value = 116

Defending force 1045 troops, 10 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 30

Engineers: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled

Allied ground losses:
46 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 5 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Assaulting units:
21st/A Division

Defending units:
1/297th Infantry Battalion

For the first time Jeff sweeps the skies over Seattle. He does okay until the P38s show up and wreck the sweep. Do I dare hope he used KB planes for this?

quote:

Morning Air attack on Seattle , at 212,52

Weather in hex: Moderate rain

Raid detected at 38 NM, estimated altitude 24,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 12 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 34

Allied aircraft
P-38E Lightning x 13
P-39D Airacobra x 13
P-40E Warhawk x 59

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 8 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
P-40E Warhawk: 4 destroyed

The second sweep sees 4 zeroes shot down for no Allied losses. Good! Only about half the Allied P40s are on CAP and the rest is training. Now the aerial guess game begins!

------------------------
China
------------------------

Last defenders on the Ankang road is pushed back.

------------------------
DEI
------------------------

This was nice... Two of the TTs showed "severe damage". No sinking sounds but she surely is in trouble!

Those Dutch torpedoes have an effect rating about 130 points higher than a Mk 14. 772 for the Dutch fish. Might be the biggest boom in the Allied submarine torpedo inventory; have to double check. Three hits is very serious.

That sounds fine by me! Don´t think she sank as I didn´t hear any sinking sounds but its a long way to Soerabaja and 4-5 allied subs between.

Havn´t gotten the turn (got the replay yesterday) yet so no update tonight.

In my sandbox games I have seen Nagato sunk about three times from sub torps, and three is usually enough. If you did get three hits (FOW could cloud the numbers) he may have had to head for the nearest port, not Soerabaja. If you can, check out every base and dot hex within a few hexes of the attack.

Got the turn today. She is listed as sunk but no VPs awarded so she did in fact NOT sink. Dang. 222 VPs would be a very nice boost! Vectoring in more subs but there are loads of islands for him do disband in.

Sorry about that!

Actually not my works fault this time. Jeff has been travelling. Got the turn file today but the update for it was the one I posted earlier (got the replay a couple of days ago). So you will have to wait until tomorrow for a new one!

Air losses April 20th
______________________________________________________________________________

Indeed a very good day. Only 2 pilots lost. None of them with any kills. I´ll soon have my first double ace as 3 pilots now have 8 kills.

Japanese losses are fast approaching 2000. I hope to make this 3000-3500 before the end of the year.

Got anything in range that could be set to recon mission with commander discretion on target?

Might just find what island it's hiding at so you can send a welcoming committee.

Interesting that there were no Lightning or Airacobra losses, only Warhawks. And were there Hurricanes in action anywhere?

Sadly, no. Even if I had some F-4s in the area the closest allied base is too far.

The P39s have surprised me. This is the first time I´m playing with Simons latest AC files and the P39 are doing really good down at 10k.

P38s are set on high CAP above the P39s and P40s. They got the dive on the Zeroes which pretty much meant they were never shot at.

PS.

I know I said an update would come today but life decided otherwise. Got two turns done though. I spent almost 2 hours setting up the first major allied offensive move. Stay tuned for (hopefully) an update tomorrow.

The cannons on both the P-38s & P-39s really do help. The P-38s at 34k in sweeps are even good enough to take on Mr Tojo. Just ask John.

Finally some spare time. This will be more of a theater specific update rather then a day to day one.

------------------------
NORPAC
------------------------

By the looks of it Jeff have stopped expanding the air base at Coal Harbor. KB is still sitting there providing CAP. The Strategic bombing campaign has been a failure so far. Not saying it will stay that way but so far it has only netted the Japanese 400 VPs. Nowhere near to cover the cost in VPs so far invested.

Only Kodiak and Skagway remains in allied hands now though and Japanese base VPs are growing. Allied goal he is very simple. Minimize Japanese strategic VPs, protect allied plane factories and most importantly protect mainland Canada and the US West Coast.

32nd ID just arrived and will reinforce Prince Rupert (already 500 AV, 4.5 forts and some nasty CD guns).

Current naval assets:
None

------------------------
SOPAC
------------------------

After capturing Ndeni with a battalion sized fragment a couple of months back there has (surprisingly) been no more advances here. The allies are digging in and reinforcing. A sizable force is on mainland Australia and New Zealand.

I´m slowly but surely reinforcing Noumea and Suva. Forts will soon reach 4. I´m reluctant to reinforce too much at this point. Slowly building harbors at Hiva Oa and Vavau.

My logistic chain is working great. I´m shipping everything from WC -> Cristobal -> Sydney/Auckland. Convoys refuel on the return leg either at Hiva Oa, Tahiti or Pago Pago.

Most of the allied Navy is currently upgrading at Auckland and Melbourne. I now have enough fuel here to start being more aggressive once the upgrades are done.

Current naval assets:
Sara and York
San Francisco, Minneapolis, Australia, Indianapolis, Pensacola, Chester, Chicago and Louisville.
Mighty Boise + 8 CLs
24 DDs
32 Subs

------------------------
India
------------------------

The allied counter attack certainly got Jeffs attention. A lot of units prepping for Darwin, Perth and other targets in OZ have been diverted to Chittagong. Last recon showed 50+ units and 120k troops. They are now moving for the abandoned Comilla. Allied units have pulled back to the forests around Silchar.

I think I have enough to stop him but I don´t dare risk an engagement. One bad attack and India will be wide open for Jeff. Priority right now is to make sure the troops fleeing Burma get out. 1st Burma ID + 48th Gurkhas and 63rd Indian are moving at 22 miles per day on the road out from Imphal. Once they are secure everything south of Calcutta will be temporarily abandoned.

Current allied ground strength is southern India is around 3000 AV. Among those are some excellent units like the 70th and 18th British IDs, 6th and 7th OZ IDs and 7th Armored BDE. Nothing big coming in the near future but the 32nd US and 2nd British will arrive in about two months.

I also have a reserve force of about 1500 AV but this is made up mostly by low EXP/MRL Indian IDs that will need more time to train before they can be considered combat ready.

India will be the main allied show for 42 and I have some big things planned here. I have some substantial naval forces here. Mainly Royal Navy but some significant US reinforcements in the form of a CV TF with Hornet and Enterprise.

Current naval assets:
Hornet/Enterprise
Formidable, Indomitable, Hermes
PoW, Repulse, Ramilles, Revenge, Resolution, Royal Sovereign.
Cornwall, Dorsetshire, Exeter, Vincennes, Houston, Northhampton,
9 CLs,

------------------------
Strategic musings
------------------------

I´m still confident in my position. Time is ticking by with very few Japanese gains lately (outside China). I think the incursion into India is a huge mistake. If I don´t make any mistakes I think its pretty much impossible for Jeff to hang onto any gains here until 1/43.

The Japanese strategic bombing campaign still have very little to show for it. The 400 VPs so far gained have all been from locations I´ve chosen not to defend. Japanese air losses far exceed the VPs gained.

I´ll continue to focus on maximizing allied VPs. Best way to do that is by killing Japanese planes and ships and build up existing bases. There will be a huge influx of engineers starting shortly to help boost base expansion.

Zeroes are brittle to canon fire!

No sweeps from 34k though. 20k max for both sides.

Comparing this to my last game I have 1800 VPs more then I had in that game. And its not Manila because Allied base VPs are only 200 more in this game. The extra 1600 VPs come from Japanese plane, ship and LCU losses.

Comparing this to my first game (against Erik) I have 2100 more VPs in this game.

Part of the point difference has to be KB wasting its time sitting in the Gulf of Alaska, but you have learned a lot too and are applying lessons to your defence. Good show!

Thanks!

Its interesting to compare the three games and the three different openings. The most effective one so far was Toms. Nick/Jeff have way more base VPs (4000 more) but has paid dearly in ship and airlosses. A major difference is also that the base VPs arn´t permanent while the strategic VPs are. By this time Tom had something like 6000 strategic VPs.

So unless Jeff can really start to harvest VPs the PH/NORPAC opening is inferior to the OZ one.

But I think looking at allied VPs are much more important. 1600 more allied VPs is 6400 extra VPs for the Japanese to find somewhere. That is a lot of VPs in 42. Its also why I feel much more secure in this game. I´m fairly sure I can get somewhere around 10-12k VPs by the end of 42. Even with China gone a bunch of strat VPs I think 40k Japanese VPs will be very hard to get.

Bloody day in the air!

------------------------
NORPAC
------------------------

Jeff suddenly goes bonanza and sweep Seattle like there is no tomorrow. He doesn´t do very well. But well enough that I decide to pull back. I don´t want to get into a sweeping competition.

I want to contend his bombings and not his sweeps.

He also decides to bomb Vancouver all of the sudden. I have only a lone AA unit there but they do well enough to disrupt the strike and little damage is done.

------------------------
China
------------------------

Two big attacks here. First on the Tuyun road where the 1st Japanese Panzer Armee strikes....

quote:

Ground combat at 74,52 (near Tuyun)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 41399 troops, 376 guns, 488 vehicles, Assault Value = 1222

Defending force 50120 troops, 150 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1254

Japanese adjusted assault: 619

Allied adjusted defense: 3172

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 5

Combat modifiers

Vehicles lost 99 (12 destroyed, 87 disabled)

Allied ground losses:
1777 casualties reported
Squads: 9 destroyed, 111 disabled
Non Combat: 2 destroyed, 57 disabled
Engineers: 1 destroyed, 10 disabled

Assaulting units:
51st Division

5th Tank Regiment
7th Tank Regiment
6th Tank Regiment

Defending units:
28th Chinese Corps
10th Chinese Corps
11th Chinese Corps
25th Chinese Corps
99th Chinese Corps
4th War Area
9th Group Army

Considering the amassed tanks I´m amazed I did so well again. No complains from me...

Then its time for the Ankang road which also does considerably better then I thought. Also a Panzer Attack...

quote:

Ground combat at 83,44 (near Ankang)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 40020 troops, 471 guns, 298 vehicles, Assault Value = 1189

I decide to try some sweeps here. I do okay. Sadly okay doesn´t cut it in 42. I have to pull back here as I´m running low on Hurri As. Can´t upgrade to the B model as I don´t have an AF big enough...

In 21 days I get almost 100 P40s in reinforcements coming straight for Aden. I have decent pilots to put in them too.

As can be seen it was a bloody day. Another 228 VPs Jeff have to make up from somewhere. But I can´t sustain losses like this.

You lost 34 planes in a day of action and can't sustain that? I mean I know the Allies are really lean at this point, but you killed way more than you lost... by the time his groups are ready again (a week?), yours are good to go also.

Jeff suddenly goes bonanza and sweep Seattle like there is no tomorrow.

In American English I think you mean he went "bananas." Don't know about British English.

To put things into perspective...
I lost 35% of my P40E reserve pool.
I lost 50% of my Hurri IIB pool
I lost the entire Hurri IIA pool.
I have no H81-A3s left to replace the losses.
I have no P38s in the pool to replace the losses.

Kind of significant I would say for a single day.

PS. 100+ Zeroes swept Seattle the next turn.

Funny! I always thought it was an american expression? Perhaps its origin is "bananas". But we say "bonanza" meaning something like going "all in" but in a kind of crazy way. Usually in conjunction with drinking a lot of alcohol.

To us Amuricans bonanza means a boon, windfall, really big jackpot or a really large spread of land near Virginia City:

So . . . the Airacobras are now the backbone of your air defense? Quite a change from the historical situation.

Right. But we use it as a noun. "Bananas" in this case would be an adverb. I've never heard "bonanza" used as one.

Hah! That actually makes a little sense considering the "Swenglish" meaning.

Ah, I wish they did. The PDU OFF hammer hits me bad here. The P39s do very well so far and I even have some in the pool. But only 1 FS on the WC can use them! The squadrons that can are either in OZ or on their way to India. Dang.

Perhaps he had a bonanza? That's American usage, I think.

Ok, sure, you have none in the pool right now... I don't think you should worry about the Hurricane-a's: you get plenty of -b's and -c's as the year goes on. Losing that many -b's does hurt a little, but you should look at what you got out of the expenditure of the planes. In this case, many more VPs than they were worth, and perhaps time while he fills those units back out.

Also, who cares about the P-40E? If they were P-39Ds I'd get it... .

bonanza (n.) 1844, American English, from Spanish bonanza "a rich lode," originally "fair weather at sea, prosperity," from Vulgar Latin *bonacia, from Latin bonus "good" (see bene-).
