I avoid fighter/bomber missions early in the war. I think I do more long-term damage to Japan by knocking down planes/pilots than hitting ground units. Also I am not going to stop the steam-roller early int eh war. Sometimes when I think Japan has extended itself and reached what I consider a "stop-point" or key location then I will do ground attack but thats what the level bombers are for, fighters for escort and CAP. As for plane types, early war I like the P-40E and Spits (just love Spits for no real "game reason", just love the look) over P39 and Hurricane. As others said, i keep the Spits doing CAP. I try to place the P38's where I may need the long-range ability & generally use them for "special missions" like a long-range surprise sweep or longer range escort. I try to avoid using them as general duty fighters due to service rating. Doing CAP The P40's, P-39's, Hurricanes, Spits are the workhorses, I place them where I need fighters. (always have more needs than fighters at this point) They are roughly equal, the pilot that makes the difference. The other early war fighters (Buff's, etc) I try to keep at same airbases as the decent fighters like Hurr, P40's etc, I figure more numbers to put in air for CAP or Sweeps & maybe they will take a few hits instead of the better fighters (cannon fodder)
