falcon2006 -> Comparison of allies fighters and fighter-bomberss (10/10/2015 1:14:03 PM)

Hey guys, I was seeking for a comment on allies fighters and fighter-bombers of the first year. Here are some types, P-40E, P-38E, P-43, P-39D, Spitfire Vc Trop, Hurricane Trop , P-36s, and buffalos. If you are the allies leader, and you can decide to produce which fighters and fighter-bombers, which type will be your choice in the first year or what tactics will be useful for your choosed aircrafts.

In game the P-39D is probably better than it should be. The P-38E is the best fighter for long range, but it has such a high service rating, it really isn't very useful overall. The P-40E is probably the best the US has. Of course the Wildcat is the best carrier fighter early on. The Hurricane is a pretty good fighter especially the IIb with it's 12X .303s, but it has terrible range. The Spitfire has the same range problem.

Warhawk - great escort fighter (range and cruise speed), good for CAP
P-38 - great sweeper over enemy bases, bad for continuous CAP since service rating too high
Airacobra - average CAP fighter

Not sure the P-39 should be discounted - some players report it is very good at lower altitudes. It is a great bomber killer with that cannon.

Many times the choices you have are not dictated by what is the best airplane but how many you can afford to lose. You get lots of P-39s and P-40Es. Use them offensively. Keep your British fighters as CAP over your own bases. Hurricanes and Spits do well at high levels while the American fighters are more designed for low altitude work. Look at the "Maneuver bands" in the aircraft data. I keep my aircraft in the highest maneuver band that has the full maneuver rating. I know this gives the high flying Japanese the "bounce", but once they are down to your best level you can dogfight much better with them. As always, the best pilots are the key to success, more than the airframe.

Well, the thing is you have to consider them all as fighters in 1942 and avoid the fighter bomber mode. You get so few planes and it is way to easy to lose them if you use the as fighter bombers. For the most part they are fighting Japanese fighters. The P39D, P40E and Hurricane are all fairly equal in that respect and a match for the early zero. (The pitiful Oscar we need not mention) The P40E has better range so I consider it to be the best of the lot. As for combat it does not seem to matter. My highest killing unit in the first six months of the war was equipped with P39s. The problem is when the Tojo comes on board in mid 42 you then move into the "Tojo Gap" because Japanese air power is pretty dominant until newer Allied planes come on line in mid 43. The P40K is about equal to the Tojo but all other planes such as the spit V, hurricane IIC, and P39 can't compete. The P38 is fine but the small production number and 3 service rating negates this excellent plane. Buffalos, Mohawks, and such are training planes and need to be moved out of front line squadrons as soon and you can. I gave up moving the p38 E to front line units as well. It is a one shot pony and once damaged just becomes a target for Japanese bombers.

I avoid fighter/bomber missions early in the war. I think I do more long-term damage to Japan by knocking down planes/pilots than hitting ground units. Also I am not going to stop the steam-roller early int eh war. Sometimes when I think Japan has extended itself and reached what I consider a "stop-point" or key location then I will do ground attack but thats what the level bombers are for, fighters for escort and CAP. As for plane types, early war I like the P-40E and Spits (just love Spits for no real "game reason", just love the look) over P39 and Hurricane. As others said, i keep the Spits doing CAP.

I try to place the P38's where I may need the long-range ability & generally use them for "special missions" like a long-range surprise sweep or longer range escort. I try to avoid using them as general duty fighters due to service rating. Doing CAP The P40's, P-39's, Hurricanes, Spits are the workhorses, I place them where I need fighters. (always have more needs than fighters at this point) They are roughly equal, the pilot that makes the difference.

The other early war fighters (Buff's, etc) I try to keep at same airbases as the decent fighters like Hurr, P40's etc, I figure more numbers to put in air for CAP or Sweeps & maybe they will take a few hits instead of the better fighters (cannon fodder)
