Has anyone tried to post comments yet? I registered on the promise of being able to post "on the map" - whatever that means- but have not been able to find a way to post anything. Maybe it is not set up yet? There should be a way to contact the site administration.

Thanks to CptEggman for making this thread and for your kind words (And thanks Sard and Feltan!).

The site is live today, as it is the Date of Infamy December 7th, 1941.

Very cool...maybe we can get them to show us how to setup such a site in the future? WOuld be nice for all of your AARs as well.

Site is open source https://github.com/Baloogan/OperationGlacier

Is there anyway to see battle reports and or where battles have taken place in this interface? Would be nice to have the list of ships sunk as well. ;)

I think so, but I think it's still a bit bugged. Don't know how, but I did once use a map mode where you could click on all kinds of events. Battles, sigint, things of that nature. Right now I can't for the life of me find it again.

Events/Sigint/Combat results start on Dec 8th, should show up tomorrow.

ORIGINAL: Anachro

After reviewing the site, I concur that having a battles and/or ships sunk list would be very helpful.

Good idea! I'll add that.

Didn't somebody a few years ago make a site that could do exactly what they've done here? Basically dumping Tracker and the map to a website?

Didn't it look pretty much like this? Is this the same thing?

If only I had that much time on my hands...

Might be thinking of this? http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3893082 Was 5-6 months ago.

How do you change your side restriction? I made a mistake and picked Japan....GP

Right now there isn't an easy way; we really don't want to be spoiled on any secret plans the other player might have. I'll happily change your side restriction if you could tell me the side you would want (Japan/Allies/Both).

Comments are attached to units and bases, to post a comment on Pearl Harbor (assuming you are not japan side restricted like I am) one would go to this page here http://www.operationglacier.com/Unit?tid=Allies_Base_584&game_name=OperationGlacierI

Copy pasting my post from the original thread:

This uses the excellent WITP Tracker to help generate the data for the website.

Allies-Only Map

Japan-Only Map

Combined Map

Pearl Harbor makes a good example for a quick tutorial on the Operation Glacier interface. I followed War in the Pacific UI as best I could, so if you are a WITP veteran the UI should Just Make Sense.

Clicking on the red circle brings up the comments made on that hex.

Clicking on the red 'X' up top brings up all the events that occurred on that hex.

The anchor icon brings up all the ships disbanded in the port.

If we click on the BB Maryland link we get a neat graph of damage over time along with information about the Maryland and its class.

If we click on the float plane detachment we get a whole pile of graphs for this unit. I swear these graphs will get more interesting after the first turn...

Back to the map! Clicking on the little square with an X through it in the lower left corner brings up the 'land combat units' in this hex.

And selecting one... Huh, I wonder what happened on the 7th!

And finally, the little Task Force icon in the bottom right!

Finally, one can change the underlying map as well as apply filters to the visible units. (More filters to come! Suggestions very welcome!)

Open source: https://github.com/Baloogan/OperationGlacier (If you would like to contribue or try to get this running please let me know, I still have quite a few commits to push to this repo)

Very cool, Baloogan. Although I don't know yet which side to choose, I will follow with interest.

EDIT

One thing, I'm not seeing any "red x" to click on at the moment to, say, get information on the PH attack.

I can click on the ships stationed in PH to see damages though.

Gee, who knew! You made the web interface. That is exactly what I was remembering. I found it interesting, but only really useful if you were going to do something like what you're doing.

Figuring out how to place events is a bit tricky, all the events from Dec 7th will show up on Dec 8th. All the events from Dec 8th will show up on Dec 9th and etc.

OK, I found the comments section on the individual units, but I am wondering how I will make general comments on a particular battle or proposed strategy. Maybe that is not the intention for our participation in your site- it is the model for participation on this one - so let me know and I will tailor my responses to what feedback you want to get.

This looks promising guys. Thanks.

Figured it out. You can get these details on the map when selecting a specific day and side (top left, under "Operation Glacier"). Then small boxes with an X in them appear with sightings, battle reports (unabridged), etc.

December 8th example: http://operationglacier.baloogancampaign.com/Map?side=Allies&date=411208&game_name=OperationGlacierI

See around Pearl.

You can select to view a different side (or both at the same time) by clicking on the top left header "Operation Glacier".

Ah ha!

I would love to be able to comment on things that aren't as granular as what the website allows: basically commenting on locations and events, as far as I can tell, yeah? I think what you're doing is really cool and wish I were in the position to do it, it looks like it will be a lot of fun.

In any case, I can't imagine you want comments on strategy and such as responses to your weekly videos on YouTube (not to mention, I don't want to comment there...), so is there somewhere else I/we could comment?

For example, it's impossible to comment on logistics or industry as far as I can see in the website. You mention in your intro video that you're wanting to discuss strategy as well... although I'm under the impression that the videos will be much delayed as you're just now started to post the results whereas your game date is up into March of 1942 at least.

Also, I'm sure you're both aware that our big corner of the Matrix forums are full of information on almost everything.

Edit: Ah, noticed a couple things about the site that may be bugs -

1) I can edit other people's posts... I assume I shouldn't be able to do that.

2) I assume this one is because I selected to be able to view both sides, but I am unable to respond to a comment. For example, if I see there is a comment attached to a ship, I click on the ship... and then the comments are not visible, although I can add a comment. However, before I logged in when I clicked on the ship name I was able to see the comments there and it seemed clear that if I clicked "Add Comment" it would be added to the thread.

2a) Is there a better way to reply to a comment?

Keep it up guys!

Although it would really be helpful to have some general "comments on what happened" narrative for both sides... Like - Japan: "PoW and Repulse are resting at the bottom of the China Sea - check the combat reports here..." or "Quite successful strike at Pearl Harbor, yet the allied flak is deadly!"

Also informations like "We are playing Scenario 28 DBB-C modification, with settings unrealiable USN torpedoes, allied Damage control On, PDU-ON/OFF, etc..."

And few higher thoughts .. about planning and future operations :) Let the guys see how the story unfolds ...

Some more feedback:

Maybe a more prominent location on the homepage and map displaying current date (in addition to the sunk ships list, battles, etc. which you noted).

Also, is there a way to change icons to reflect their type/task force mission? Carriers and Sub Patrols are all appearing as Surface Fleets on the map. Makes it harder to read/discern strategic and tactical information.

Lokasenna, when he was talking about playing PBEM to January 1942 and against the AI to March 1942 he was referring to his previous experience many years ago playing WITP - just to give followers an idea of his experience level.

We are playing scenario 001 on stock map with unreliable USN torps, allied damage control on, PDU OFF, ah I'll just look up the screenshot we took of the settings.

Thanks for mentioning that, it's a bug. Showing what the air units are currently flying not what they were on Dec 8th. Will fix.

You can press edit on other people's comments to make it easier to copy paste from them, but it should not allow you to save your edits. The reason why I did this is because the comments use 'markdown' formatting with one addition: if you put a unit's exact name in [square brackets] it makes that into a link to the unit.

I'll make a better system for replying to comments, I've learnt alot about the web technology I used to make the site since I've made it and it could definitely use some improvements!
