***********With Z Special Unit, aboard HMNZS Leander 10 m SE Erromango, 19:40, March 6**************

<he addresses a group of commandoes of Z Special Force, a combined Dutch, Australian and NZ special operations unit. He stands with his hands clasped behind his back, jaw set, a grim look on his face>

Men, I'm Cpt Bevan but you are to immediately forget that. Ostensibly, Leander is to bombard the taro field at Koumac, but our true mission is to put you lads ashore. I'm sure I don't need to say how dangerous this mission is or how important to the Allied effort. Your task is to ingratiated yourselves with the native population by pretending to be gods from afar bringing magical gifts of great value. <He pauses to examine the faces of the commandoes who look at each other nervously> Sure, I realize this may seem unorthodox but I have spent the last 4 month studying the novel religion which has taken hold on Tanna.
Men, the natives there worship a cross-eyed PBY pilot with 20/200 vision simply because he was the first white man they had ever seen and because of his fantastic gifts. <the commandoes begin to shift nervously from foot to foot> Right! Let me show you the inducement. <He pulls back a canvas cover on the life raft to
reveal a 20 qt sauce pan, a large cast iron skillet and a well polished copper pitcher>

Commando A: But sir, those are pots?

Cpt. Bevan, newly assigned CO of Leander: Not merely pots, Sergeant....CARGO!

Commando B: But sir, this is New and Improved Caledonia. Won't the French already have been there? It would seem that would undercut the wonder of our arrival.

Cpt. Bevan, newly assigned CO of Leander: Hmmm, good question, Lt,. I'll have to get back to you on that. Right, then! H Hour is 01:30. You had best all get some hot food and rest if you can. Any other questions?

Commando C: What did you say your name was sir?.....

One can watch the adventures of Attack Force Z here, led by Mel Gibson of all people.

An A-24 group from Tanna impale themselves against a heavy CAP. We just move all the SBD's and most of the F4F's to Noumea. Too bad. 70-80 SBD's and 45 F4F's might have got through.

Fun Thanksgiving. Not as insanely warm as last year but nice enough to eat outside. We had a brined and then smoked turkey that was seriously good. Somebody invited a Canadian for some odd reason. He was missing a tooth from hockey but could really sing and play the guitar so when the sun when down everyone hung out by the fireplace outside and did sing-a-longs (sort of) and drank Scotch.

Thank you pilgrims. That was fun.

Young man in nicely pressed uniform:..Yes, take Idaho for example, original capital expenditure $12.5 million..say...22 years of
depreciation...perhaps $3 million in residual value. Now figure $120,000 fuel cost for transit back to Pearl and then $3.8 million for the June triple A upgrade and you are already in the hole to the tune of $1 million.

FAM: Wait, do you mean it is cheaper to let Idaho be sunk?

Young man in nicely pressed uniform: Well, sir, she still has value. Perhaps some type of lease arrangement?

FAM: Lease? To whom? The Australians and New Zealanders don't have any cash. Why, the only ones around here with any money are the..the...well, you know.

Young man in nicely pressed uniform: Precisely.

I think JJ are trying to repair Koumac and attrit or air forces at Noumea. The SBD's head back to Suva and Norfolk and the operational B-17's and medium bombers fly in to Noumea for an attack on Koumac
tomorrow. Noumea is at 4.95 and should go to level 5. This means the B-17's will suffer penalties tomorrow but they may just wear out the Zeroes at Koumac.

We couldn't spare any escorts to attack Koumac. The idea is to fatigue the Zeroes.
This is about as good as you could expect with 66 Zeroes darkening the sky and no escorts. Too many fighters so there must be LRCAP from the carriers.

No other combats near N&IC. Noumea goes to level 5. Time to bring in more 17's and reduce Koumac to baked
taro salad.

Zeroes from 5 different carriers squadrons are identified over Koumac.

Generally, one should not use P-40B's for a fighter sweep against hotshot Zeroes but we are trying to fatigue the defenders of Koumac by giving them blisters on their trigger fingers. A squadron of F4F's stayed in their bunks
70 of the Little Yellow Bastards over Koumac. They are still being covered by fighters from the KB while the KB stays out of attack range.

Afternoon Air attack on Koumac , at 113,156

Allied aircraft losses
