This started long time ago as a diversion (for Ndeni), but then somehow I decided to push forward as a stand alone.
I will try to run supplies to Darwin, this time "in force". I have a strong Australian TF (CAs Canberra, Australia, CLs Perth, Leander, Achilles, plus DDs) providing distant support to two supply TFs

Last turn they managed to cross into the gulf of Carpentaria, but were discovered by Nells, 2 freighters lost, 2 heavily damaged.

I am not having a warm, fuzzy feeling about this one, but I won't pull out, you can see enemy carriers closing on the rear and most likely there will be a welcoming committee from Timor. We will see... at least I will have strong CAP support from Darwin

In other news: AO Shiretoko sunk!! good to see that torpedoes are less faulty now

Could had been worst, but as predicted, a strong Japanese cruiser TF found the Australians. At least the battle was on daytime, thus all torpedoes (both sides) missed. Results were inconclusive, I lost a destroyer, probably more will sink later. Japan had a few destroyers at "heavy fires", but as always, cruisers are invulnerable, Furutaka got fires, so maybe they will get out of control? I am not holding my breath

Afterwards IJA bombers harassed, but failed to do anything other that getting shot or damaged.
Finally, the land based Vals finished off yesterday cripples.
Where are the carriers?

I don't have yet the turn, just the combat replay. KB showed who is the boss.
Several ships hit, multiple times, most likely 25K supply sunk, and for all purposes, the Australian navy is out of the war for many months.... To be continued

Looking at the bright side, look how far away from the Pacific is the KB... it definitively run at full speed last turn, I can take advantage of this.
I can accelerate my next invasion or I can try to intercept it coming back, it certainly had losses and it expended torpedoes

Afternoon fun started with Helen bombers failing to score, followed by Hudsons also failing to hit some desroyers near Cooktown (they were looking for the stragglers).

Then the main event; a huge coordinated strike. Followed by 3 smaller, uncoordinated ones

I counted: 1 M5 Zero, 2 M2 Zero, 11 Judys, 7 Kates shot down. My own losses were horrendous, but I will update them once I have the turn

Considering the mass pounding, it is surprising that so few ships sank; but before the details: great submarine new; 2 tankers, San Diego Maru and San Pedro Maru went down; each is worth more than a cruiser

Losses, and damaged ships:

Allies:
xAK James Lykes and Empire Baxter sank yesterday,
DD Thanet, xAKs Ethel Edwards, Nurani one turn ago
xAK Exmoor and xAK Mana two turns ago

DD Tenedos, Stuart, Monaghan and Worden are OK, all others ships are pretty much stranded in Darwin for several months.
xAK Nightingale, Cape Alava and Jefferson Myers might be able to unload 10K supply

Japan:
2 tankers went down yesterday (only one reported), one more, a small St-C the day before
2 destroyers ended with heavy fires, a turn ago. they were Hakaze and Sanae, certainly not Teruzuki or Akizuki, they might sink.

Aargh! Perfect positioning and timing for the KB, and perfect coordination at maximum distance too! Really amazing.

It was actually not full coordinated, there were 4 strikes, and only the first two were. This is how I managed to destroy so many Judys, the last two came unescorted.

That said, there were at least 7 carriers, so I guess it was quite a feat. KB is still very strong, they easily took care of the P-40Ks and Spitfires; maybe numbers also helped
I saw squadrons from: Akagi, Kaga, Soryu, Hyryu, Shokaku, Zuikaku, Ryujo.
Recon over Rabaul is not showing the liner-conversions carriers there, so they must be at Truk or maybe they are at the other end of the empire; Pt Blair/ Singapore.

KB will likely retire via NW New Guinea to get to Babeldaob or head for Truk to replenish. Your chances of carrier/SCTF interception would be nil on that route. Subs are another story.
I just can't see him being foolish enough to return via the Horn Island route now that he has exposed his presence and used up most of his torpedoes.

I hope he goes through Babeldaob, as it will give me the longest window of opportunity; at least a week to be back in position

I think today was the bloodiest day of the air war... massive air battles over Ledo and Darwin. Significant fighter losses for Japan, relatively few bombers shot down.

But before going to the details.. yesterday I was wondering where was Junyo... Skypjack found it

I know it won't sink, but this will mean at least a month in the shipyard.

Before moving on to the air battles, lets talk about the navy.

Long story short, the KB mopped the floor again, all 5 xAKs left went down, with it I lost enough supply to feed Darwin for a few months . For some reason they didn't disband I ordered them all to disband; do not unload, do not refuel, you can see a few posts above the screen shots; somehow only the surface TFs disbanded, the other 2 remained idle.. like lambs going to the slaughter

It is funny what a difference a hex can do: had they reached Darwin (the missed it by a hex), they would had been punished by that first strike, but afterwards they would had disbanded. And then the bombing would had required a port strike, with most of the focus against the cruisers.

Anyway, other than the fact I have no supply in Darwin, losses are irrelevant. I would actually welcome a 3rd strike against the port. I doubt he would manage to sink the Australian cruisers; or maybe a few at most.

Today's air battles were the biggest slugfest I have seen; or at least I have seen in a long time.

Game summary shows a total of 169 aircraft lost, 122 of them due to air-to-air

My personal tally of the combat animations shows the following air-to-air losses:
Over Ledo:
16 Oscar IIB
10 Tojos IIa
8 Helen

Over Darwin:
27 Zero A6M2 (13 from KB, the rest land based)
9 Ruffes
15 Zero A6M5 (all KB)
1 Judy
KB is certainly not coming back through Horn Island,

This goes in line with what the FOW count is showing. I lost 10 P-38Gs, 8 Hurricanes IIc, and 11 C-47s on Ledo
I lost 8 P-40K, 8 Beufighters and 4 Spitfires on Darwin.

Spitfires by the way really made the day, they were present in all Darwin battles (quite a few), and after all the slaughter only 4 were lost

January 5th; just a few news:

- DD Sanae sank, this is confirmed by the OP report

- Darwin: no more day bombing; he switched to night bombing (2 bombs hit: Canberra and DD Stuart ); this was followed by naval bombardment, which I expected, thereby I took out all good squadrons and replaced them with P-39s and P-40Es doing CAP; I have plenty of these 2 so not a big loss

- Weak attack at Ledo, more Tojos went down for few Allied losses; 15 according to FOW report, but I would say at least 10.

- He spotted a few TFs near Luganville. He already knows there is going to be some developments tomorrow, thus he decided to withdraw all his ships from Lunga& Tulagi.. STAY TUNNED... the next few turns are going to be fun

As I always say after most every drubbing...."it could have been worse!" Good air to air loss ratio though!

surprised at the lack of AA loss during his daylight port strike - Darwin needs more AA!!

Not a lot of news on last turn,

- Darwin was attacked again last night, for no losses. And I know AA is lacking, but considering how poor is supply, I have no appetite in moving more; if anything I might move some troops out to reduce supply consumption.

- CA Atago hit by SS Tuna; this was near Soerabaja. I will need to check my notes to see if this was involved in latest fights.

- He increased his naval search capabilities near Ndeni; pretty much all TFs were spotted, there won't be any surprise tomorrow, but with KB far away, I won't mind

And this is tomorrow's main event:
TFs are a bit disorganized, this because I rushed this operation after seeing the KB near Darwin; some ships were under repair and couldn't join earlier
Pretty much the same ships I used for Ndeni; with the addition of TF Fletcher just arriving from Pearl Harbor with 3 slow battleships and 3 "good" CVEs

Almost everything worked yesterday; a day Japan will certainly remember and mourn.
To sum up:
- Naval bombardment of Lunga and Tabiteau yielded excellent results... Quite horrendous losses, if the game's FOW tally is to be believed... more than 80 airframes lost, 74 due to bombing; see attached picture for the details.

- Previous to this bombing there were two small naval engagements:
* 2 Japanese xAKs and 1 MGB sunk.
* DD Huges severely damaged by a mine; flood 63(41), system 6... should reach Ndeni unless there is another submarine strike

- Amphibious assault went well; Most troops unloaded and the final success of this operation is no longer in question. Enemy spotted:
301st Ind.Infantry Battalion
5th Indpt SNLF Coy
24th Fld AA Machinecannon Company
6th Port Unit
41st JNAF AF Unit

- Very active Japanese submarine efforts: many missed, but in the end they managed to hit CVE Prince William, damage is flood 49(27) and system 3. Another one that should survive as long as it reaches Ndeni. All pilots were already withdrawn, aiframes might need a dock to take out; Ndeni port is at level 2, but shouldn't be a problem to increase to level 3

- No carrier operations over Lunga due to weather. In Tabiteau the Wildcats intercepted 4 unescorted Betties, all went down. Airfield bombing was just ok. On Kirakira, Beaufighters decided not to fly, thereby B-26s/ Hudson flew alone and were intercepted by Oscars. Some losses

- Chungking lost another fort level... it is now at level 3... and the end is near

Jan 8th was a relatively quiet turn, or as quiet as you can get during an invasion; the good news is of course that Kikakira unloading is almost completed, and the APs are either on its way home or will be relatively soon. This is significant because I only have the AP carrying capacity, roughly speaking, of a full division. So certainly I on't want heavy losses as it can stop the offensive for a long time.

So what was new:
- amphibious TF unloaded unopposed, this also include some supply-only TF sent to Rennel island

- Japanese submarines dropped mines at Kirakira, but I was expecting this and had 2 task forces of DMS (3 ship each). All mines should be cleaned up in the next day or so

- Intense enemy SS activity, but nothing to report other than a midget sub destroyed

- Japanese battleship TF withdrew, but they found S-45 and it put a torpedo on destroyer Maikaze

- Another nasty bombardment at Lunga, more airframes destroyed. This was precede by an attack against a poor, lone MGB. Bombardments will continue for a very long time.

- One last CVE bombing of Tabiteau airfield. Some enemy losses. Also, 2E bombers hit Kirakira's ground forces, no visible damage, but likely disruption went up a bit.

- 1st Marines will attack tomorrow, we will see how quickly they get the base

- Then 6 Nells tried to get into Kirakira's ships. but they were are intercepted and destroyed by Wildcat's CAP

- 503rd Parachute Rgt jumped over Rennel island; capturing this dot base (soon to be transformed into a big airfield). 7th Indpt SNLF Coy was defeated but not destroyed (yet)

- Last but not least, CVE Prince William reached Ndeni, all Wildcats were safely unloaded. this ship will move to Luganville for emergency repairs, before moving to Sydney

Hmm ... are you seeking a carrier battle or trying to avoid one? The KB still looks very strong.

Other than that, your landings are looking good.

Since his recent carrier strikes near Darwin do you assume some of his air groups are depleted with lower morale/higher exhaustion? Is it possible he is low on torpedoes? It is always best not to engage in a battle when your enemy is at his zenith but when he is getting worn out, tired and diminished. Can you pull him away from his escorted LBA and into yours as a force multiplier?

He most certainly refueled and rearmed, likely in Timor using AKEs/ AOs... wear and tear might be high, I wouldn't be surprised if he has lost a knot in cruise speed due to constantly been at sea for so long

I have also to assume he has replenished pilots and improved moral/ reduced fatigue, after all just a few days of rest would do that. Besides only his fighter squadrons were hit

I am not planning to seek a carrier battle, but I won't pull back if he wants one. So if he plays "safe" and hugs the Papuan coast, then there is not going to be any battle

If in the other hand he plans to interfere with Kirakira/ Rennel island invasions, then there will be fireworks!!

First, lets talk about last turn:

- Russel Island and Tulagi were naval bombarded, I am surprised to see Vals at Russel island, as it was an obvious risky place, a few destroyed, a lot more damaged. Tulagi was empty.

- Kirakira attack failed, or better to say a 2-to-1 result that reduced fort to level 2.. It should fall tomorrow, otherwise, not a lot to report: unloading of base support, engineers, etc was uneventful, 2E ground bombed for minimal results.

- Patrol squadrons failed to spot the KB, however, S-47 attacked unsuccessfully, what looks like the KB near Pt Moresby (no carrier found, but all the usual companions: BB Kirishima, Hiei, CA Nachi, Myoko, Chikuma, CS Chitose)

- Some attempts by Japanese LBAs to bomb Rennel island, but all failed, with minimal casualties to both. Also at Rennel; 7th independent coy destroyed, with it all opposition eliminated.

And the plan for tomorrow... a potential clash of titans:

There are advantages and disadvantages of looking for a showdown againt the KB

The key advantages are:
- Unless he retreats, KB's movements will be obvious
- I am relatively close to the safe Australian coast; this includes big ports and enough naval support to patch up any damaged ship for it's relatively safe journey to Sydney's shipyard. Japan in the other hand has nothing other than Rabaul, then a long trip back to Truk and the Home Islands. A damaged Japanese carrier will be out of action for quite a long time.
- USN fully rested, at full strength, with no recent losses. Japan lost significant number of pilots lately, thereby it's pilots might not be top notch. I am assuming it fully refueled and rearmed, but has not have time for minor wear and tear damage. When the bombs rain down, this can be the difference between survival or sinking.
- I have plenty of supplies of Wildcats and Avengers; Moreover, Corsairs pools are starting to fill, very soon all Marines will give away their Wildcats; losses can be easily replaced.
- Good, naval search capability from Cooktown, Cairns and Townsville Catalinas

Disadvantages:
- Out of LBA support; within long range enemy LBA support
- Nowhere to land in case of carriers sinking; just ditching.
- A6M5 superiority

Probably not the best location for a CV duel since your out of LBA range. Its a roll of the dice....do you feel lucky?
Can you range some P-38s for additional CAP? How about Heavies on Naval strike - they won't hit anything, but could attrit CAP..

But the biggest question - why risk a fight now with no clear advantage? You may surprise him - true! But alternatively, why not wait till he comes within range of your LBA - I've got to assume he's moving this way to hit you somewhere...

Also, question - surprised you haven't developed Coen or Portland Roads?

In any case, good hunting!!!
