Looks like A will be the winner. Of course this opens up a whole new can of worms. What should I use for the backgrounds? It looks like Version A should be in a bunker or room or something rather than an open field.

Any ideas for backgrounds?

Here are 4 possible backgrounds I have come up with. I'm open to any other suggestions.

Each background would be a permanent background, meaning it would show over top of the terrain type background that normally shows in subformations (so there would be no terrain specific backgrounds, snow for winter, etc). Another possibility is to use a combination of different backgrounds. for example, use landscape background for combat formations and then use a flag background or something for the staff subformation alone.

Anyone have any ideas for backgrounds or have a particular favorite among the ones below?

EDIT: Of course the terrain background would vary between different unit types, for example sea for sea units, sky for air units. But the other backgrounds would be the same for all unit types if I were to adopt them.

Thank you for the compliment. Although I think it's mostly just having the right software and some patience more so than having special talent.

Below is another possible background option. I could use landscape backgrounds for all units except staff alone would have the background pictured below which would sort of look like they were inside a building (presumably HQ) doing their planning.

What do you guys think of using the background scheme below?

I like the landscape myself but on second thought the one in the room probably works best.

Yup Landscape.
Except that the horizon should be a bit higher (I'm a bit nitpicking here) because you're looking down on the two figures, so the horizon can't be that "low". With the British paratrooper the horizon is about right because you're standing on the same level as that figure.

Agree on the horizon. That's why I think the pic in post # 154 above may be better for the Staff icon. What do you think of having a special background for staff (as shown below)?

I am leaning towards having the flag behind the staff guys. However the bunker/building also works.

Building/room backround (but not this one). Maybe put big map on the wall.

map1
map2

I don't like the look of this table with map
But officers and map are fine.

Is it the color/texture of the table you don't like or the table itself? If it's the color and/or texture, then how about this one?

@Vic

I would like to help Gary out with these graphics. I think I will start by making a modified version of newdawn2.at2 and incorporate the graphics into an atzip file.

Is there documentation on how to make a proper atzip file anywhere?

An atzip is simply a standard zip file (rename one zip and you'll see). Just get your folder locations correct and you're good to go. I simply create my folders, put my files in them and then zip them up. I then rename the zip to atzip.

You can use the editor or simply construct on your own as I described.

I have packaged up Gary's graphics, along with some others, and made them available as an atzip file at the Scenario Bank. I will keep the mod updated as the graphics are revised.

More info can be found here.

First thing I notice is that this does not use anewdawn3.at2 with unit templates and auto reinforcements. Nice work nevertheless but I don't see myself playing anewdawn2 games anymore.

Unfortunately I only have access to the Steam version. Once the new version is available on Steam I will be updateing anewdawn3 in the same manner.

If only Matrix could see fit to give me a Matrix copy to match my Steam copy I could get to work on this pronto.

I had something weird happen today when playing. I had saved a game, closed it went into editor, then open the scenario, then open the saved game of said scenario. Made my corrections, then tried to save it. When I would click on save, then move to try and save it that whole section disappeared, and only the unit image and NATO symbol was showing. It did this 2-3 times but finally I was able to save it. I don't know what happened or anything but that is a first for me.

Was messing around trying to create an Operation Barbarossa scenario today. I ended up creating subformation graphics for Romanians, Hungarians, Finnish, and Bulgarians; including Bazooka, SMG, Staff, Rifle and Cavalry. Attached are versions without background. Next post I will attach SFTs with backgrounds for anyone interested.

And last but not least, here is a preview of the files. These are without backgrounds. The backgrounds basically have the same units only with a field in the background.
