Status: offline 		Hi, has anyone actually completed this mission??

I've been pulling my hair out for about the last two months, even with copious saves I have not been able to complete this mission.

I've started this from scratch about 6 times and tried differing tactics and EMCON. From creeping along to detect the sub pickets to Alpha strikes on just the runway to try close it down.

Normally my AAW patrols or Escorts get mauled by the Mig-23s leaving any strike package taking 50% or higher losses before even hitting the target, then when a EN strike is launched my AAW units are swamped and loose multiple ships.

I have never reached that magic 500 points even when I've delivered my ground units to Iceland and off loaded them, due to losses of ships.

If anyone could please post me any pointers or tactics that have worked for them it will save my monitor from ending on the ground in frustration.

Yes I have.

SPOILERS!!! (but I guess that's what you asked for)

Bear in mind I haven't played this scen in a few month's so this is from memory.

The trick is to prevent the sov's from detecting you.
I set all TF's to strict EMCON and on a course due south to avoid the enemy sub's patrolling the most likely approach course, and then later loop them around and hit Iceland from the south west.

Then keep a few fighters on standby with buddy pack's along with some with missiles so you can intercept the Bear snoopers approaching from the north.

The first Bear will probably detect your northern most TF, but it will be unable to ID your units as long as they don't emit and that will prevent the Sov's from launching a strike against you.

Then launch a few fighter sweeps against Iceland. Remember that the Mig-23 has a rather narrow radar cone, and F-8's are quite maneuverable, so swamp his CAP with Crusaders and you will have air superiority.

Then Iceland is open for airstrikes.

I won't reveal all pointers to you as to not spoil your fun, but just remember that as long as the enemy don't know where your TF's are he won't attack, and if you plan your first strike properly, he won't have the ability to do so after the strike.

And remember to set up plenty of ASW patrols.

Status: offline 		Thanks for the sound advice Søren, I will try again. Makes sense they can't strike what they can't detect.

From your comment about the radar cone of the Mig 23 I take it you micro manage the AAW as opposed to setting a mission and letting the AI manage it.

Status: offline 		Yes I usually micro manage most things.
An old Harpoon habit, but in this case in particular I feel it is necessary as the enemy out ranges you, and a head to head engagement just won't end happy.

Status: offline 		Thanks for the tips it worked a treat. Scored a triumphant victory and managed to off load the entire landing force by H-Hour, with the loss of 6 fighters and 8 ground attack aircraft and and a Sea Cobra.

I run the scenario all the way to the end and fan out over Iceland with ground forces to complete the stated mission - "Remove Soviet presence on Iceland and establish NATO control over the island."

Micro managing AAW works a well, Its something I did in Harpoon too - you had too, but the mission AI seems to work reasonably so left it to it's own devices until this scenario
