A number of IJN vessels were also destroyed when the B-29 groups from Formosa hit the port at Hiroshima/Kure (which was also mined from the air this day). Many night and day air attacks against our fleet, but no hits on ships today. CVE Lunga Point broke open and flooded, sinking from damage incurred yesterday. On the ground we had a very good attack.

Half of the divisions (including the two fresh ones) will attack tomorrow along with the artillery and armor. There will be 3 naval bombardments, including the fast battleships. With the large casualties the defenders suffered today I am certain the base will fall to us tomorrow.

Air losses. Heavy for us but worse for the Empire. Open the text attachment and maximize it so the columns line up.

Not exactly a fair fight ... can't imagine trying to defend Japan at this point in the war. You've made great progress in the Philippines too, really encouraging for the Allied side.

No turn until much later, but...

Early reports cite witnesses seeing smoke over the fleet after a night air attack...

It looks like the Imperial defenders at Hankow got good die rolls this time. A short rest for our troops and another go. We presently have 4,486 AV, so our ratio over the defenders has increased handily.

Home Islands west. There was much action around Kochi and around Tokara Retto, too much to put it all here. Night surface combat again went heavily in our favor but did take a toll on our destroyers. Night air attacks were almost all ineffective again, but two of them found their mark with torpedoes! And they hit the same target.

The Australian 9th Division is at 15% and could attack, but instead will remain in reserve to attack the following day. That will still give us almost 4,200 AV attacking tomorrow.

China frontier. Continued reduction of the zombies from the coast, but only by air this day. The combat odds are still below 1 to 1 and I forgot to renew the attacks orders yesterday (automatically cancelled by odds less than 1 to 1, doh!).

Home Islands west. Two days before support troops begin unloading at Kochi. There were a few night surface battles and night air strikes, but none notable. Engineering units will begin loading tonight at Amami Oshima for Kochi to supplement those already at sea. Support units began landing to day at Tokara Retto and will begin landing tonight at Yakushima. Two P-47D squadrons (the last of that mark remaining) hopped from Amami Oshima to Tokara Retto today with the arrival of support and the airfield building to operational fighter strip size. SoPac Command HQ (Halsey) will land at Kochi tonight to boost morale and ignite fighting spirit to cosmic proportions.

Somehow I have to start gathering shipping and rounding up the units for the Kumamoto invasion. The land advance out of Kochi has begun, and tomorrow the first armored units will leave the hex. Two more days for the first infantry and artillery to follow them. There are about 11,000 defenders at Matsuyama, so I figure that the force moving now can take that place (despite terrain) after sweeping aside the ex-Kochi defenders currently on the road. Takamatsu is clear terrain but with more defenders. By the time we are moving on that place we should have a lot more land based fighters in place to help shepherd air strikes. The force now moving is 4 divisions, all the artillery and all but one armored unit. The remaining 2 divisions and 1 armored unit will set out for Takamatsu once the road is clear and the larger force is already on the way to Matsuyama. That will keep stacking penalties to a minimum.

Today's ship losses. Very minor actions today compared to the past few days. Three IJN DD did show up from yesterday (not reflected here).
