Impulse: 5 (Allied)

Land Combat (Cont)

The attack was rubbish. A 2 thrown which destroys the TERR but the Soviet infantry were in disarray and uncoordinated from the start and their tanks ill-suited to fighting their way through such mountainous territory. The Soviets won't be going any further this turn and I wouldn't want to be Koniev when the Vozd hears about this....

Rebase
The Soviets move their long range bomber closer to Vladivostok

The CW use all 4 available moves:
Whitley bomber in Bilbao to Spanish Morocco.
Wellesley bomber in England rebase to Bilbao
Canadian Hurricane in Spanish Sahara to Rabat.
Whitley bomber in Egypt rebase to Port Sudan.

Reorganisation
None

And that ends the impulse.

"Mr Koniev, do I look happy to you? I cordially invite you to Moscow for a 'little chat' about your recent performance in Manchuria."

As expected, Uncle Joe takes the news well

J/A 41 Axis 6

No DoW or alignments.

Japan and Germany Land. Germany uses O-chit used to reorganise HQ's. Italy combined.

Italian CA moves to CSV. Do Allies want to intercept?

Sorry gents - just to let you know my internet is screwed again (told a new hub will be here by the end of the week - we'll see).

It may come back in the meantime but I suspect not (I will keep trying of course).

The CA stays in the 4-box.

Italy declines combat in the East and West Med, leaving two old favourites.

The newly arrived CA begins sweeping Cape St Vincent. The Axis don't bring any additional air. CW and fly Hurricane and Fairey up to 1-box and Harrow to 2-box. Any offers?

The Italian sub captain comes to periscope depth ...

... only to find carrier aircraft bearing down upon him, while the CA Gorizia prepares to take evasive action. Meanwhile, swarms of RAF fighters lurk ready to pounce on the hapless Italian naval bombers.

Searches: Axis 2, Allies 1. The Italians decline Naval Air, I suppose it's a bit of a forlorn hope the Allies will as well?

Hurricanes fall upon the Italian Gabbiano's, forcing them back to base without loss to themselves. The Erone pilots decide not to press the matter and abort the combat.

So near, yet so far. AA rolls of 5, 1, 10, 5, 10, 8 give the CW pilots a bit of a fright with some very near misses but ultimately are pretty ineffectual.

Where do the Swordfish pilots wish to concentrate their initial strike?

The sub makes it's final dive. The Gorizia avoids serious damage but needs a couple of weeks for minor repairs.

Searches: Axis 1, Allies 1.

I presume naval air and the two CVP's to fly as additional fighters?

There will be a short delay while I re-run the naval combat as the game completely froze and the only way I could get out was by closing the programme through task manager.

The Erone pilots decide the area is a little too hot with no fighter cover and head back to base.

The RN, with French assistance, is left in sole possession of Cape St Vincent.

In Biscay, the weaker of the two Italian subs initiates the search and the other stays at periscope depth. Seaches of Axis 6, Allies 4 mean no combat.

Over to Mayhemizer for German ground strikes.

If it had been me, I would have flown at least one of the CVPs as a bomber. I probably would have flown both as bombers. The reason is that if the Axis NAV got lucky and rolled a DA, a CVP flying as a bomber could absorb the result and still be available for combat in later impulses this turn. If a FTR absorbs the result, it is done for the turn. Also, if the Axis gets really lucky and rolls a DX, the Allies then have a choice of which plane to destroy. I would probably pick the Swordfish.

In other words, the Swordfish, flying as bombers, act as escorts for the fighters. Very strange, but the way the WiF combat system works.

Interesting perspective Courtenay, thank you. I think that could have application in certain, more complex air combats and I will try to remember that.

But as the Axis had no Fighters at all, wouldn't this apply:

If a side starts a round with no fighters, all opposing bombers are immediately cleared through to the target.
