Mayhemizer_slith -> 4 player E-mail: AAR (4/11/2016 7:21:26 PM)

Hello everyone. This is 4 player Global War AAR using E-mail.

AllenK & Mayhemizer as Axis vs Warspite1 & Orm as Allies.

Germany -> Mayhemizer
Japan + Italy -> AllenK
CW + USA + Nat China -> Orm
USSR + France + Com China -> Warspite1

These are optional rules we are using.

There are also two house rules
-USSR - Japan pact (Basically playing the normal rules but without markers so based upon Garrison ratios. No attack in 39 and needs 2:1 in 40 for Japan to DoW).
-Only strategic bombing allowed as a night mission (all other missions must be performed by day).

Edit: third house rule added later

HOUSE RULE FOR EN-ROUTE INTERCEPTION

Bombers can fly together only if they attack together same hex.

1) Attacker announces all bombers (and escorting fighters) going for strategic bombing. Attacker announces route for each bomber (or bomber squadron if several bombers fly together to same target) to the point they are safe from defending fighters or to target hex if that hex is inside intercept range.

2) Defending fighters can intercept if bombers fly inside their intercept range. Defender announces which fighters will intercept and which bombers are intercepted.

3) Attacker chooses factory inside fighters intercept range for intercepted bombers.

When intercepted, new fighters are not allowed to intercept to target hex. In reality, there would have been air to air combat and bomber would have continued to target behind fighter screen.

AA gun can fire if
a) Attacker announces target voluntarily (in step 1) or
b) Attacker chooses target where AA gun can fire even if there was other target inside intercept range without AA gun. (AA gun is not worthless, it can protect factories next impulse when fighters are used)

4) Attacker can intercept if they have fighters in range.

5) Air to air combat.

6) Bombing

Have fun guys!

A little commentary on the mechanics of 4 person email play - team captains? live Skype for large naval combats? etc. - would probably be of interest to everyone.

Mayhemizer_slith -> RE: 4 player E-mail: AAR (4/11/2016 8:11:40 PM)

At the moment we are playing by asking reactions in this AAR and sending files when really needed. But if I know I'm not going to be around I tell AllenK to call the shots.

AllenK -> RE: 4 player E-mail: AAR (4/11/2016 8:33:09 PM)

Letting me call the shots. Can you get "friendly fire" in MWiF?

Klydon -> RE: 4 player E-mail: AAR (4/11/2016 10:08:01 PM)

This sounds like it may have a ton of promise as far as interesting and entertainment factor go.

Good luck gents and thanks for doing it!

Mayhemizer_slith -> RE: 4 player E-mail: AAR (4/12/2016 4:25:48 AM)

Polish setup it not what I expected, sneaky...

Courtenay -> RE: 4 player E-mail: AAR (4/12/2016 4:30:17 AM)

Is this thread for both side's use?

Mayhemizer_slith -> RE: 4 player E-mail: AAR (4/12/2016 4:55:06 AM)

Yes, this AAR is for both (normal AAR). This is where we ask interceptions etc.

warspite1 -> RE: 4 player E-mail: AAR (4/12/2016 6:49:41 AM)

23rd August 1939

In news that has stunned the world (not to mention the populations of Germany and the USSR) Germany and the Soviet Union have signed a non-aggression pact. This news comes hot on the heels of the recently signed Soviet-Japanese Neutrality Pact.

This is a great day for world peace. As a result of this historic move, Europe should be able to resolve all its difference peacefully and we will all be able to live a life of religious fulfilment.... unless of course those evil war hungry Poles decide to attack German border guards in a totally unprovoked manner....

warspite1

Similar mechanics to that employed in the 2-player version. All done via e-mail and/or contact on this thread. No Skype.

This is the first time I will have tried anything but a 2-player game. I can only speak for the Allies (and me) here, but there is no team captain. Orm, as the much better player will take the lead on many things - and I am sure I will need to call on him for rules advice on stuff that is new to me.

Co-operation between France and the CW will be limited by a) the rules and b) the wish for each of us to do our own thing, while at the same time wanting to co-operate to win the game!

The Soviet Union is a little more detached. Fact is I cannot play entirely as Stalin, as to do so would probably consign the Allies to certain defeat. That said, I do not want the USSR to be a simple extension of the CW (and later the US). We'll see how that pans out.

brian brian -> RE: 4 player E-mail: AAR (4/12/2016 1:52:31 PM)

Why no use of the Limited Supply Across Straits optional?

I've been thinking about that one some for use in solitaire, though I've never given it much thought before.

There is a very nasty interaction between limited supply across straits and limited overseas supply. There has been arguments over whether this interaction is correct by the rules. (I don't know, myself.) In any case, as MWiF is currently implemented, it is probably better not to use these rules together.

If I had to pick just one of them, I would pick limited overseas supply.

Mayhemizer_slith -> RE: 4 player E-mail: AAR (4/12/2016 3:43:06 PM)

S/0 39 Axis 1

AllenK can move German units, there are not so many things to do during this impulse.

Germany chooses combined.

Naval air: He112 to North Sea box 2.

Naval: CA Blucher loaded with INF div to North Sea box 4.

Ground Strike: Do 17M to Warsaw and Do 17E to Lodz. Both land to Breslau.

One unit moves in East Prussia to bring units in supply. Other 5 units moves in Poland and they make automatic an attack vs 3-3 INF. See the amazing picture how I want to zigzag (specially in southern Poland to get railway connection) [:)]

After attack 6-3 INF from Germany advances to city.

No rebase or reorganization.

brian brian -> RE: 4 player E-mail: AAR (4/12/2016 3:43:18 PM)

I need to learn up on that. I've probably always checked that box on a paper list of optionals and then generally forgotten about it while actually playing.

Stalin achieving religious fulfillment - now that's funny.

See, this is what happens when you play without "No ZOC on Surprise". It's so totally unrealistic. Steve should have dropped everything and made this compulsory optional rule his number one priority to code. The game is completely unplayable without it.

AllenK -> RE: 4 player E-mail: AAR (4/12/2016 9:29:57 PM)

To business.

S/O 39 Axis 1.

Germany & Italy Combined. Japan Land.

German He-112 flies out to patrol the North Sea (2-box).

The German cruiser Blucher loads SS 14th Inf Div and sails into the North Sea (4-box).

Italians send a sub to St. Vincent (2-box).

The Japs try a speculative Ground Strike against Nationalist 1st Cav.

Do-17's launch ground strikes on Warsaw and Lodz.

On Lodz, the Germans come close but draw a blank.

Warsaw is slightly better.

AllenK -> RE: 4 player E-mail: AAR (4/12/2016 10:17:43 PM)

Japan rails Garr from Port Talbot to Soochow and Inf HQ from Manchuria to NE of Chengchow.

German troops in Poland follow the Victor Silvester Dance the Viennese Waltz in a Day routine previously choreographed.

Japanese 12th Inf march into Chengchow. Nobody cares (10 rolled). They continue to Tungkwan. It rates a couple of column inches on page 20 (8 rolled).

The remainder of the Jap moves look as below.

AllenK -> RE: 4 player E-mail: AAR (4/12/2016 10:26:14 PM)

The Germans all gang up on the Inf in Poznan.

The Japanese go for a bit of a Hail Mary against Mao.

Does the venerable Chinese commander wish to have a go at cheering himself on and boosting his team performance in a defensive play?

Attack at 7:6 (1:1).

Yes. Mao uses defensive HQ support.

And Communist China decide to select the blitz table.

I use my power, as partner in this alliance, to make the call.

warspite1

I would have gone with this response too.

AllenK -> RE: 4 player E-mail: AAR (4/13/2016 7:51:02 PM)

Mao orders himself to support himself.

The Japs fly 3 bombers to give 6 points of ground support.

The support order doesn't get through (10 rolled).

Final odds on the 2 attacks.
