Thanks for offering advice. I keep making rookie mistakes despite my best efforts. I would be a fool to say that the Russian relative success is because
of my prowess at the game (HA!)

I played WITP and WITP AE for 10 years and extensively modded to the point where there was nothing left of the game to learn.
I lament that level of expertise that I don't possess in WITE.

I will build the cavalry corps as fast as possible. Would you recommend distinct armies or is it better to attack a cavalry corps to infantry armies?

What is a suggested HQ support level, should I disband any support units that don't fit?

You should already have at least 15 cavalry corps with sapper attachments. You aren't gaining anything through delay based on what is shown here.

As far as HQ support levels go, all that should be over and done with, HQs locked, by the end of Summer '41. Not sure what your intent is here.

The amount of replacements received while being atached to a front line unit , severly limits their efectivnes.

I prefer to keep them in the HQ, so they can receive adequate repacements.

Real life and real jobs get in the way sometimes.

Germans launch several single hex counterattacks where I pushed in only 1 or 2 points.
Russians continue the methodical reduction of the Moscow front, making steady if unspectacular progress.
along the rest of the MLR, Russians attack in fits and spurts to hold troops

Question regarding support units.

What is a suggested mix of support units. I need to set them to manual next turn and disband some units of marginal use. here is what I have.

12 mortars (9 heavy)
28 AA units attached to armies (not cities)
103 artillery units
25 motorcycle
45 engineer (22 regiment and 23 battalion)

What would be a good approach. Thinking of getting rid of AAs first for sappers

Thoughts?

21 hexes taken in the campaign for Moscow, including getting across Uka east of Kaluga.

The same general plan exists - to push from three sides and pocket what I can

this is what the soviets had in jan 42, so you could make up your mind .

56 tank batalions
57 atg regiments
119 arty regiments
88 aaa bat + 2 aaa regiments.
18 mortar batalions
6 rocket regiments + (73 batalions (equivalent to 24 regiments))
31 separate ponton bridge batalions
150 engineer batalions (equivalent to 50 sapper regiments)
32 engineer brigades (construction units)

On the glacial pace of gaming goes, entirely my fault due to work and family commitments.

Third turn of Soviet winter counteroffensive
1- 51 total hexes retaken from the Crimea to Vyshny
2- Ruskies attack across the Crimea isthmus and break out into the Ukraine. This could be a major land grab opportunity.
3- Germany pushed back across the Klyazma river northeast of Moscow. Ruskies one hex from the eastern two hexes of the city. make good progress in the north of Moscow too.
4- Belgorod retaken

Russians finish building out cavalry corps
Russians continue to build maximum new air units per turn
70% of winter offensive forces are up at the combat zones
Russians use excess rail capacity to move industry that will be at risk next summer

Lots of success here. He appears to be under-trooped and that should create good opportunity to advance.

More steady progress. Should reach Moscow next turn. I plan to surround it, not attack into it.

Here is a view of the air force

40 units have experience at least of 65
40 units have morale of 70 or greater

No air unit stays in combat duties if morale falls below national morale. It goes to national reserve

No Air factories were captured in 1941

1941 Ends

I am fortunate that with all the errors I made I am in the position that I am.

1 - Volkhov front reaches the outskirts of eastern Moscow in heavy fighting. I will not attempt to enter Moscow until I have surrounded it, which is the objective for January - surround Moscow...
2 - Russian forces reach within 20 miles of Kaluga and have successfully breached the Ona river defenses
3 - the soviet pincer out of the Crimea and from Stalino is now 60 miles from closing and may close next turn. No or few enemy troops will be captured. Two new undersized armies are being thrown into the storm this next turn with the idea that Zhaporozhye is the offensive target
4 - Kharkov is 2 hexes distant and a new target of the winter offensive
5 - 2 hexes to Kalinin but large enemy forces protect her. It will be a major fight

two main thrusts are planned. The enemy will not get the chance to fight in Moscow until and unless it is surrounded

Looking to close the gap this turn.

I am fighting the Romanians and Italians, so I would expect to continue to make progress.

Set army support level to 2 ( for instance 2 arty reg*52 armys=104 arty regiments )
front level suport to 1

However, even with this setings, the computer has engineer level set to 2 for corps/3 for army/ 4 for front. All of your engineer support would end up in just 21 armies.
that is why, you were recomended to put army support to lock (-1 setting) and asign suport units manualy

Real life again strikes.

I had expected national morale changes as I crossed in to 42, but it dis not occurred except Germany changed to 74. Perhaps it changes over time?

The axis forces roughly doubled in strength when the year crossed and the weather was Blizzard across the board. Bummer for me. I had hoped to pinch Moscow and get 6-8 hexes but that will be impossible if those changes are permanent.
1. Moscow - expect the double pincer to close around the end of January. It would be inanity to try to force the city while it is in supply.
2. Russians attack straight into the enemy an enemy mobile army at Kalnin the northern end of the major effort. Heavy fighting continues and we are 1 hex from the city / main objective.
3. Germans have regimented many Finn divisions and pushed displaced German units into the Moscow sector. Pretty slick, as I am not strong enough to attack with any velocity there.
4. Kaluga is only 1 hex distant now - the southern end of the Moscow main winter offensive
5. Kharkov also has Russian forces adjacent. Also will have to be surrounded like Belgorod which is now Russian
6. The pincer effort on the edge of the Sea of Azov closed a couple hexes and enemy did not withdraw. Perhaps some captured units are in the offering as I just committed two more armies to the fight.

Built my first artillery units, and continued to build max air units per turn and do national reserve swapping. using excess rail capacity to move up units in the Urals that have completed refit and evacuate factories in the south up to Rostov

Soviet forces continued their punishing broad based attacks
1. around Moscow, forces are continuing in their efforts to surround the city, making steady but slow progress. Goals in the area are to get halfway to Yazma by the end of the winter campaign
2. all remaining secondary city objectives are possible or close. Kharkov, Kalinin, Vysnhy volocheck, Kaluga, and Zaporozyhe
3. In the south, near the Sea of Azov, Russian forces linked up and are pushing on Zaporozyhe
4. portions of the transcacuses front released and are aggregating at Rostov
5. New artillery units continue to be built

Good progress here, and the Romanians appear to have had enough, routing an entire corps. I should expect the enemy can be pushed back to the Dnepr up to Dnetroposvsk

Germans launch limited single hex counterattacks that are largely successful
Fins have regimented but still launch an offensive to draw some reinforcement to the north. Russia responds by sending troops that have no place on the front to the sector

Gradual Moscow progress continues
Russians attack and fail to take Kharkov
Southern Ukraine attack has broad success and routed the bulk of the Romanian army
trans caucuses front to be committed to the southern attack to make ground.

this looks very promising. I hope to get past the Dneper, and am committing the two transcaucuses armies starting next turn. He will have to shift major forces of suffer large land losses

or so the theory goes...
