A good read. Always fun to hear of advanced technologies that we have now.

(I apparently can't post a link, but I'm talking about the Foxtrot Alpha article about the new super fuzing on the Mk76 nukes)

“Let me be very clear: this policy of strategic patience has ended,” Tillerson said. “All options are on the table. North Korea must understand that the only path to a secure, economically prosperous future is to abandon its development of nuclear weapons, ballistic missiles, and other weapons of mass destruction.”

Israel's Arrow anti-missile system...

Israel used an Arrow ABM to intercept a Syrian SAM fired at Israeli jets striking targets in Syria.

What a mess this would be if implemented in Command - SAMs shooting down SAMs shooting down AAMs... !

Any CMANO player in US receive an invitation from the Navy?

https://uk.news.yahoo.com/singularity-us-navy-calls-gamers-055717795.html

quote:

The US Navy is calling on gamers to help it plan for and deal with the Singularity and the possible rise of highly capable, "greater-than-human" artificial intelligence. The technological singularity hypothesizes that the invention of artificial superintelligence will trigger a runway effect that will alter human civilization. Some experts predict the singularity will happen within the next few decades.

To address the issue of the singularity and prep for a post-singularity future, the US Navy is launching a week-long, browser-based multiplayer online game to crowdsource ideas for dealing with the Singularity.

Some reflections on the possible SA-5 shoot-down incident:

This article doubts on the official version, and speculates on the possibility of a retaliatory SCUD launch by Syria against Israel (I doubt it, Syrian army rogue launches or Iranian militias lauches aside, because the fast response and chain of command autorization and issues):
http://www.defensenews.com/articles/israels-arrow-scores-first-operational-hit-but-against-what

More views here, SA-5 were launched from "Eastern Syria", I think the two Syrian SA-5 placement are in Western Syria (as depicted in the Latakia scenario), and the article talks about two or more missiles launched in the general direction of Israel, more compatible with a few Scud launch than with some SA-5 lauch (straight trajectory and apogee, between another things).
As mentioned, I was skeptic on the Scud launch, but now I think it as very pausible.
The IDF official statement was perhaps a press release to prevent a ground-to-ground missile lauches escalade:
http://www.thetower.org/4737-in-first-israels-arrow-3-system-intercepts-syrian-missile-fired-at-israeli-jet/

This is probably the orginal news report, very compatible with all the previous comments.
Also, is curious some sources label the ABM as Arrow-2 and other as Arrow-3.
The photo with the debris on the house yard/fence, is identified as an Arrow booster:
http://www.timesofisrael.com/iaf-arrow-battery-intercepts-syrian-missile-in-first-reported-use-of-the-system/

On SA-5 sites and placements:
http://geimint.blogspot.com.es/2007/07/s-200-sam-system-site-analysis.html

As mentioned, the five SA-5 placements in Syria in 2010 (before the civil war from 2011) are all in Western Syria, not Eastern Syria.
In Wikipedia was also mentioned some months ago a "new" placement from late 2016 near Aleppo, also in Western Syria.
All those details are consistent with a few Scud launches against Israel.
http://www.ausairpower.net/APA-Syria-SAM-Deployment.html#mozTocId445614
quote:

There are currently 5 active S-200 sites within Syria. The S-200 provides long-range barrier air defense along the western border and into the Mediterranean.

Details of all this and other previous incident in 2016:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S-200_(missile)#Operational_history
quote:

The Syrian Army constructed an S-200 site at Kweires airport, near Aleppo in July 2016.[18][19] On September 12, 2016, Israel Defense Forces confirmed that two Syrian S-200 missiles were fired at Israeli attack planes while they were on a mission inside the Syrian airspace. The Syrian Defense Ministry claimed that an Israeli jet and drone were shot down. According to IDF spokesman's office, the claims are "total lies," and "at no point was the safety of IDF aircraft compromised." [20]
On March 17, 2017 Israeli Air Force attacked a number of Syrian armed forces targets near Palmyria in Syria. During the action a number of Syrian S-200 missiles were fired at the Israeli aircraft[citation needed]. One of the missiles, going ballistic after losing its target was inbound to a populated area in Israel, as such the Israeli missile defense claimed to fire an Arrow missile which allegedly intercepted the incoming rocket.[citation needed] Indeed two other S-200 missiles allegedly landed in other parts of Israel, having lost their target, while the Syrian Defense Ministry claimed that an Israeli fighter jet was shot down, which was denied by Israel. An Arrow 3 missile landed in Jordan.

More details to drawn conclusions by yourselves:
- Damascus (Western Syria) - Tel Aviv (by any other point of Israel, is a very small country) distance is some 130 nm in the Scenario Editor.

- S-200VE/SA-5b (SA-5c was never exported, and also its range is some 162 nm) range is some 151 nm, too short range to reach Israel if launched from Eastern Syria (100 or 200 nm more East and North of Damascus).

- Scud range: The Military Balance 2016 lists as Syrian surface-to-surface missiles these:
- Scud A/B/C, ranges: 81/162/297 nm, the last one is the longer missile range, and capable to be launched from Eastern Syria.
- SS-21 Scarab/9K79 Tochka, ranges (diverse variants): 37.8-97 nm.
- Fateh 110/M-600 (Syrian variant of Iranian missile), range: 135 nm, perhaps maintained by Iranian forces in Syria.

Good I am interested in this too...

[Israel fired its Arrow interceptor missile to knock down one of the surface-to-air rockets headed for its territory, forcing the nation's army to issue a rare confirmation that it had carried out an attack inside Syria. It marked the first time Israel had used the Arrow missile, which has been jointly developed with the U.S. over years to defend against long-range missiles from Iran.]

What I find particularly interesting about this is Israel's decision to mention the Arrow shootdown in the first place, since it would have been very easy for them not to mention it at all.

It seems to me they are making a very deliberate statement about their capabilities, in order to inform other operators of more advanced long-ranged SAM systems who just happen to be in the area at the moment.

In other word, they want to prove the ASAM (anti-SAM) is possible, given by the higher maneuverability and head-on impact.

ASAM isn't a very new concept, as Lockheed also have a familiar weapon to intercept AAM with micro missiles, planned to design for F-22 and F-35. The rather recent development is also using laser to kill AAM, which will be installed in large aircrafts.

Some interesting analysis and comparison here: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2017/03/22/us/is-americas-military-big-enough.html?_r=0

While Mr. Trump has said that he wants to defeat the Islamic State, he has not explained how increasing the size of the military would accomplish that.

Mr. Trump’s focus on big-ticket items is mainly “useful in more conventional military campaigns,” said Michael C. Horowitz, a University of Pennsylvania professor who studies military leadership. “The kind of investments you would make if you were primarily focused on counterinsurgency campaigns are very different.”

Mr. Trump’s announcements appear to emphasize optics as much as strategy, Mr. Horowitz said. “To the extent that tangible pieces of military equipment symbolize strength, those are things that I think the administration is interested in investing in.”

Increasing "big-ticket items" has more to do with China than ISIS. ISIS defeat requires intel, special ops, and a ruthless resolve. Not carrier battle groups per se. With ISIS, it's a shooting war of tactics. With China, optics mean a lot strategically. Mr. Horowitz is being very coy in not separating the two adversaries who are fundamentally different and require vastly different tax payer dollars.

So, with Kalibr-K containers ,

new ASW (Vinyetka and Paket-NK containers) and minehunting (UUV and USV) containers modules

and this Tor-M2 module
we literally have construction set "Build your warship from every ship"

P.S. and of course UAVs in containers, everything better with UAVs these days
as example Indela UAVs with optic

We see the bridge superstructure already completed.

Hull 1 is still in sea-trials.

Not defense related per se, but this could allow some heavier loads dedicated to a particular receiver/organization to be shipped by air.

France & UK Launch Next-Gen Missile Project with MBDA to Replace Harpoon/Scalp/Exocet by 2030
quote:

Today in London, the United Kingdom and France have signed an agreement to launch a joint concept phase of the Future Cruise / Anti-Ship Weapon (FC/ASW) programme with MBDA. The agreement was signed by Laurent Collet-Billon, head of France’s Defence Procurement Agency (DGA - Direction générale de l’armement), and Harriet Baldwin, UK Minister of Defence Procurement.
...
Laurent Collet-Billon said: “We are launching today a major new phase in our bilateral cooperation, by planning together a generation of missiles, successor to the Exocet, Harpoon, SCALP and Storm Shadow. The FC/ASW (future cruise/anti-ship weapon) programme’s aim is to have by around 2030 a new generation of missiles. This future capability is strategic, industrially as well as operationally. This new programme will be the backbone of our “One Complex Weapons” initiative.”

Behind the military strength is logistics, then behind military logistics is manufacturing, and then behind it is workforces and resources.

US defense know it for centuries, doesn't mean it's getting easier with experiences. They addressed one of a crucial issue behind the manufacturing of advanced weaponries:

LIMA 2017: Kership from France Showcased its Logistic Support & Projection Vessel LSPV 90

quote:

At LIMA 2017, the Langkawi International Maritime And Aerospace Exhibition held last week in Malaysia, French company Kership (a joint-venture between DCNS and Piriou) was showcasing one of the latest addition to its range of surface vessels: The Logistic Support & Projection Vessel (LSPV) 90.
Displacing 3,000 tons, the LSPV measures 89.9 meters in length with a breadth of 16.7 meters and a draft of 4.3 meters. The hull and superstructure are made of steel while the bridge is aluminum.

The vessel may accommodate a total of 439 people onboard:
- 39 Crew
- 150 troops and medical staff in cabins
- 250 additional accommodation capacity for troops in modular zones

The vessel speed is 16 knots thanks to its two medium speed diesel engines and controllable pitch propellers.

In terms of performance, Kership's LSPV 90 has a range of 11,000 nautical miles at 12 knots. Its endurance is 10 up to 45 days.

USNI 'debunk' Chinese Type 039A/B submarines based on satellite images, determined it is not a small submarine for limited coastal defense at all. While agreed it's only a tad bit smaller than Japanese Soryu-class subs but retained same capability of long distance operations, the heavily reliance to SLASM over torpedo is still highly probable, given by USNI that only know Yu-6 instead of the latter models:
