I can't seem to figure out how to upgrade this sentai to Oscar IV; the next upgrade for it is IIIa, which it is but I cannot upgrade to IV.

Something screwy happened here.

You don't have enough IVs, do you? Or am I missing something?

You can manually upgrade with as few as one plane.

But the upgrade path is IIIa and then IV; however, I have already upgraded to the IIIa.

I see what you're saying. Your squadron is already flying the IIIa...but shows that it's next upgrade path is to the same IIIa.

Perhaps you can downgrade to a different model and then upgrade to the IV?

No turn from Jocke today, as he is quite ill along with a son.

Plus, the loss of his prized bombers probably didn't put him into a good mood either. Just wait till I have Jacks and Georges!

Are you sure you can upgrade without the full compliment present? Like jwolf, my experience says "no, you can't." But my experience is not the most reliable indication of how things actually work.

Have you tried clicking on the Oscar-IV in the "upgrade to" screen you just showed us?

Yes, nothing happens. I may send the unit to Tokyo and see if that can change something. Perhaps if I could rail it somewhere, that might reset something.

Wait until you have a full complement of aircraft. I think I have had this problem in the past when I was playing my first game as the Allies. Pretty sure I had PDU Off and the Enterprise's Wildcats were stuck in the F4F-3A until I scrounged up enough F4F-4's to fully outfit them. Despite having 18 F4F-4's in the pools and only 3 planes in the current Enterprise group (hence why I wanted to upgrade).

Good advice, sometimes these things fix themselves.

I know that you can't do partial upgrades for the airgroups scheduled to withdraw. Maybe scheduled for a resize work the same. Wait for the full complement, yes

Big Cruiser and destroyer bombardment of Christmas Island (Pacific).

Big task forces pull into Buin.

Allies continue to use their CL, CA and Destroyers in nasty SAG, with plenty of PT boats etc. I have moved all four fast battleships into port for their AA and Radar upgrades.

Burma, the Allies move units into the open. I swept but no air defense.

The ground reinforcement arrivals.

Lots of engineers, and I find I need them in lots of places. Vietnam, Indochina and China spring to mind right away.

Hong Kong is 24 hexes from Ledo and in danger. The Allies have only built Ledo up to level 3 runways, so not much danger yet...and only those long legged British bombers pose a threat.

But I am getting ready. The AA arrived, and will be augmented to from time to time, but the these two units represent the best Japan has for quite a while. 8.8cm, radar and searchlights.

Daytime air production is provided for by a full Sentai of fighter bombers (Nicks). Currently there is no night CAP, but there is a small squadron of Pete's that can switch to that role once the Allies start pursuing night bombing.

Last game I lost quite a few ships to really long range port strikes, and I hope to not repeat that in this game.

Plane moves:

I have upgraded the size 32 factory of Ki61a to 61b. Production has been off for this factory for quite a long time, as the two Sentai of 61a's have been flying CAP over Magwe and the Allies haven't once swept. They did two or three sweeps, which they didn't do to well at...

I won't make any 61b, but doubled the size of the factory to 64 in anticipation of next months arrival of the 61c and 61d.

I will only make a handful of the 61c, enough to upgrade the sentai from 61a to 61c, but rather focus on the 61d which is a very good fighter, for the time, with CL cannons, SR2, Armor.

There are only 4 sentai that fly the Ki61d thru 43 and all will most likely be assigned to Burma.

I have four factories r&d the Tony KAI (400mph), 1 on the Ki100I and 1 (repaired fully) on the Ki100II.

I also decided to splurge and increase Frank A production 1 plane a day. This brings production to 150 month. The Frank R has advanced to 11/44 should be here before Christmas and will really boost production as all r&d facilities will switch to production.

Quite an improvement from the Nate to the Ki61d.

This Sentai is destined for Burma where I expect good things from it.

Recon suggests there maybe an AK at Buna, and although it is a level 8 air force no fighters have been present for awhile....so it is targeted.

Quite the disappointment, but a sunk ship no matter how small is welcome. Especially when there are no losses for Japan.

PDU off joys:

Fighter Bombers -- Nicks are nearing the end of their life in this game. 5 Lilly IIb/IIc squadrons will convert to Randy FB eventually, but the Nicks go mostly NF and they have to go there as the night fighters are precious.

A few late arriving size 10 training squadrons in 45 arrive, but the Nick's days are numbered.

Nicks are widely regarded as excellent Kamikazes....but not in this game.

Here is a comparison of the Nick and Randy.

I like planes with big guns, even if they miss. Actually, I think they do okay against bombers but horrible against fighters....from personal observations.

I have no research into the Randy FB;. I just had to put the r&d into the night fighter programs. I will have some eventually, once the A6M8 arrives (it is now advanced to 1/45). So we won't be seeing the Randy 102b early if at all. Maybe one month early.

Ideally, I would have like the plane around 4/44 to counter the B29 deep strikes -- but that is simply too great an expenditure of supply and r&d facilities.

Turn is away, and I think the Allies are poised to launch a major attack on Magwe, the runways around Magwe, Rangoon, etc. That or, the preparation for a major invasion at Pegu is possible, especially if the Allies know the whereabouts of the KB.

Over 250 Allied Fighters at Akyab...over 800 in theatre. Hordes of bombers.

So, I took a decided gamble today. A big gamble, and stood down the CAP over Magwe, and instead I aim to destroy two tank units in the open trying to close off the hex between Shwebo and Katha.

I converted one Oscar IIb squadron to IV and sent them to Moulmein to get used to their new planes.

My hope is the Allies sweep heavily Magwe and meet nothing...this day. However, I never get this lucky, and am counting on the Allies being timid yet.

Nothing will surprise me here, except if my gambit is successful.

Captain Orita was not the problem. You have made him a scapegoat.

See my post in this thread

The Randy-b is OK. You don't get all that many FB squadrons. If you're crunched for R&D factories, one of the first places I would cut R&D is FB's. I'd rather have the Randy-a, for example.

Left these guys a Rabaul a day too long. This will be ugly, the shore bombardment will be painful as the cd guns and mines I am sure will disappoint.

Well done, Allies. I wonder where these AA units had gotten too.

Very disappointing amount of damage done by some of the best Japanese bombers too.
