My cynical take: two options, as follows. 1. Show the historical battle, details of air search, planning, tactics, and actual operations. But a generally historically illiterate audience won't know the background, either on a large scale (why was each side fighting WW2) or a smaller scale (Doolittle Raid, Coral Sea), in order to understand why each side was there, what forces they had, and what their objectives were. 2. Planes! Ships! Subs! Bombs! Torpedoes! Enhanced with CGI!! And, for good measure, throw in a love triangle, because ... Hollywood. Guess which one is more likely?
