For years I've been a lurker seldom posting

But I figured you guys would appreciate hearing my confession...

I'm in my 50's... brought up on serious board games in the 70's. My first computer game purchase was Grigsby's Guadalcanal Campaign for Apple II+ in the early 80's. It was the 48K machine... man that was they sh*t. LOL! Brought the Apple and game home and a buddy and I played hot seat nearly 24hrs...
Fast forward thru many years of gaming... too many years... played the hell out of UV when it came out and started WITP a number of times... never finishing because life/kids/etc. always got in the way.

Sadly, I left WITP behind for many years... got in to shooters... and other games... yes... I sinned greatly.
Through it all though, I've never been able to find that one game that captured the identity of WW2... well, er, okay, maybe GDW's Europa but that takes too many square feet to play... good luck with that!

What I mean is... there is something about that era, the equipment... planes, ships, tanks, etc. the people that made it happen... The variation thru the years of the war... the impact of those innovations... it really was the greatest generation in so many ways!

Tactical games ultimately felt hollow in some way... they didn't fit in to a meaningful picture... sure I won the battle of the bulge, but I don't get to reap the reward of doing so. No long term impact.

Too many strategic games glossed over the good stuff... you know... when the Tigers show up, or the Hellcats start to see service... ;)
My long winded tale brings me back to WITP AE and my confession. Since its ascension, I've always been intimidated by AE. But I've always lurking here... admiring those who've kept the faith... all along, deep down, I've always known it is the one game that would capture the scope and flavor of WW2 I am ultimately seeking.

Thus, as of today, I repent my sins.

I give myself, whole heartedly to this task... to pray at the altar of the Admiral and submit myself to many hours... nay years of service... pushing men, supplies and equipment to their ultimate glory.

I seek forgiveness for my many years of wandering the abyss...

Thank you for hearing my confession...

Hey the install is done!! Time to get busy!!!

Status: offline 		LOL? People in my age group don't use abbreviations. Where'd you learn that? We actually know how to spell and can type with nine fingers. Yes, nine. You don't need two thumbs for the space bar. I always use the right one. I could suck the left one for all it's worth. As for axioms, here's one - those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. So the correct formulation is "What's new is old (again)".

As you can see, TruGrit has many empty therapy chairs. Nobody shows up because we are all busy living our alternate lives, err, playing the game. Rest assured, you will skip the therapy as well!

If you choose to play Japan, your best friend is to install Tracker to help manage your economy. It has helped me play that side with some degree of confidence.

I’m getting the feeling the PBEM’ers are smelling blood in the water…
I might be willing to do PBEM but would likely be later in the year because of work.
For now I’m going thru the tutorials on Youtube every spare moment and reading a lot on the forums…

Also, many many thanks for the tech support for Windows 10… I’ve got the game purring like a Hellcat.

Well.... I'm off to start a campaign... good luck and good hunting!!!

Status: offline 		Take your time. There is a mountain of things to get your head around. PBEM is something to come to when you feel you have some understanding of the game. Finding a good human opponent, however, will give you a richer playing experience than the AI can muster. Read up on the AARs. They will give you stacks of ideas on how to run your forces.

Advice I was given (if applicable) : "abandon thee thy spouse and children"

Its a great place here. There are so very many:

1) Helpful veterans in this community

2) Helpful links / definitions / explanations / AARs / Informative threads.

I would as always recommend you at least read the manual. Many things that do not seem to make sense will... spend some time in the War room FAQs....

The answer to 87.15163333% of all rookie questions is "it depends". Providing specific situations with references to the FAQ often gets you the correct answer.

(Ever get halfway through a game of cardboard armies only have the house cat jump on the table?..looked like a WW3 game after that) In high school a group of gaming friends and I would snicker whenever a classmate mentioned how tough and complex Risk was.

WITPAE is a game I play for a while and then life (job, kids, wife) stops the game for far too long.

Hang in there, this is a great game and great community.

Aren't your avatar taken from excellent game, Emperor of the Fading Suns? I really liked its rich production system, but land warfare could use some slowing down (and S...whateverwastheirname Brain Bugs, could have been more expansive).

Started in the '70's with games like Panzer Leader and Squad Leader, then graduated to computers, played hell out of UV, and have had WITP-AE, played the Guadalcanal scenario but never a GC. Just starting my first one and looking forward to it. Can't wait to dive in, and have been reading the forum for years now. Welcome aboard to all of us relatively old-timer newbies!

As I mentioned previously, I had not been able to find a game with the right feeling of being connected to the era. The decisions I made didn’t seem to have meaning in the long run… there was always something visceral that was missing.

So I fired up the grand campaign to get a feel for what AE brings to the table… keeping my first couple turns light… it’s not like every commander had the sparkling clear view of the grand strategy in play on Dec. 8th or 9th…

A couple days in I witnessed Buffaloes catching unescorted Nells and actually doing some damage… Claudes clawing up to altitude to take on some early B-17’s…

It was glorious!! Exactly what I was looking for… and… then…

The Enterprise was torpedoed and sunk South of Pearl…

Thrill and agony…

What have I gotten myself in to?

Yes!! Just finding space for games like Terrible Swift Sword, Operation Crusader, Atlantic Wall... and having the time.... ah... youth.

Good eye... Yes that is House Hawkwood... I was happy to see my Avatar was still loaded here! EFS is one of my favorites and I wish someone would remake it!

Our cat never got up on things, my Mom would have skinned it alive. My nemesis was my younger sister, who thought all the colored counters were "cool!" She liked to examine them, and they often didn't end up back in their original location. In some ways, more disastrous than a cat, since one didn't always notice the errant counter until play had continued a bit ... ("hey, you're cheating, that wasn't there before")

Or retirement..... It will give you something to look forward to.

I just hope I will still be able to absorb rulebooks which seem to be the size of encyclopaedias. One of the goals of maintaining an active mind for your entire life.
