Hummingbirds kept checking her out, hovering close to her head with her watching them, then they would go to the feeders.

When I was a kid we had the 17 year cicadas hatch out one year. I looked for them all summer but never saw one. I'm sure the praying mantises ate well that year. We always had mantises for pest control.

We've found a few massive mantises around here. The biggest one we found last year was perched on the hummingbird feeder, awaiting the obvious. Yes, "it" is a thing. Amazing.

The largest common mantises in the US are Chinese mantises. They lay large eggcases that can be up to 1 inch around. When full grown they are 5-6 inches long. Because of the encapsulated eggs, it's easy to get them for gardeners. Those are the ones I get. You can also get Carolina mantises who get to about 1/2 the size of the Chinese mantises.

I have to buy the egg cases on EBay because ones laid here usually don't hatch, the springs are too cool. There are a couple of sellers in the Mid Atlantic states that sell on EBay. The ones we got when I was a kid were from the foothills of the Sierras east of Sacramento.

Mantises mostly east insects, but they will eat any critter small enough. I saw one eating a tree frog once. There is a picture out there of one eating a hummingbird.

Chinese Mantises have to be big in order to eat Chinese Hornets.

Some of those hives or swarms are crazy. I've seen the Chinese National Guard equivalent taking them out with flame throwers from afar.

I had to do a lot of cropping and shrinking to make the files small enough for the forum.

Isn't it though? I wonder why there aren't any other birds sharing the bird bath?

So, like I said in earlier posts while she was perambulating my back yard I went out and refilled the birdbath. She was watching me do that. The following sequence shows what she did about it, beginning from the position that juvenile robin had been occupying.

What was she up to that required her to cool her butt in a hurry? Communing with eagles?

Actually I do and it's on a pedestal but I've not seen her in it before, or any of the other hawks. It's so deep only larger birds like starlings and robins wade in, and not frequently at that.
