I fairly important article by the U.S. Naval War College.

http://nationalinterest.org/feature/how-chinas-navy-preparing-fight-the-far-seas-21583?utm_source=Sailthru&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=EBB%2007.19.2017&utm_term=Editorial%20-%20Early%20Bird%20Brief

"Tang and Yang’s 2016 Naval Affairs article is not a formal statement of Chinese naval strategy—and should not be treated as such. It does, however, offer important insights into how PLA Navy strategists are striving to operationalize Xi Jinping’s ambitious new requirements that it to become a “world-class navy” and prepare for “military struggle” at sea."

Great National Interest article by Andrew Davies on ASW warfare, the challenging sound environment of the seas last years, and very interesting links:

Well, suddenly NI has some sense makers to write these articles: no longer the 'which ship is better' debate, but 'how this ship change strategies' with some documents to support with.

Building a powerful, toe-to-toe combative frontliners with both quantity and quality isn't every world navies' game because of the sheer amount of cost and logistical support they require. In long run, China will going to pay huge amount of military budget to get this close to the reality, even for now it sounds laughable compare to the US Navy.

What I don't understand however is the 055 destroyer. It is just the beginning of game-changing asset, and it's not the last China can build even better. As well as the Aircraft Carrier and SS(B)N can't get their priorities without assembling a large rank of CBG, they are not directly equalize the strength of Navy no matter how many jets and missiles can bring along with. 055 can be a very powerful candidate as a bodyguard, but definitely not the most important asset for the entire naval warfare if it happens. So this article seems to unnaturally praising the 055 destroyer for more readers get into an attention. Aren't they happy with many dozens of Burkes around the world, and some are FoNing around SCS?

Slightly low res, but shows a J-16 Strike Flanker with the new AAM combo: PL-15 + PL-10

Also shows the Su-30-like inner-wing hardpoint which would allow it to carry up to 8 BVRAAMs.

Put every political events and tensions between China and Taiwan, and you can get this analysis -- Ex-journalist Peter Enav predict that the China-Taiwan military clash like in CMANO's Chains of War campaign will becomes a reality very soon. However, this article posts very little military perspectives between two nations, and mostly piled up with policies of US critique and Chinese avarice. The article does not draw too much attentions internationally as well as the original website, but surprisingly it is virally spreading and translated for many Chinese news websites. Most commenters just take some laughs, but few are triggered and believe this is the last thing China could do before she stalls:

Japan to Produce and Procure XASM-3 Supersonic Anti-Ship Missile in 2018

quote:

According to Japanese news site Yomiuri Online, Japan's next geenration XASM-3 supersonic anti-ship missile will enter mass production in 2018. The missile will also be officially introduced with the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF), it will then be called ASM-3. The Japanese MoD likely conducted a test earlier this year as we previously reported.

Haven't updated in a while... is XASM-3 (to be called ASM-3 once in inventory) in the latest DB ?

It's been in the DB for a while, but doesn't have any actual loadouts on the F-2 (as of DB467).

The Mystery ICBM on that 16 wheel TEL has been finally identified: DF-31AG (or called "DF-31B" by some)

The model of that ICBM now unveiled at Beijing's People's Revolutionary Museum, which was recently renovated: Left is the DF-31AG and right the DF-31A

The DF-31AG/B is said to incorporate MIRV and extended range (which made using a longer missile and hence a longer and beefier TEL necesary).

The use of G ('Gai', modified) is so rare for more modern Chinese military hardwares. My thought exactly why it is not called DF-31B or a new 3X family consider both TEL and the launch tube are very different.

Indeed. This missile is quite mysterious. Why make a DF-31AG/B if the DF-41 is ready?

Anyway... Looks like the Type 055 lead ship's name was unveiled: Nanchang

Meanwhile of the Sino-Rus Naval Drill that previously passed several NATO waters. Official media spokesman answering some questions concerned by British journalists:

http://3g.china.com/act/military/568/20170724/31000555.html (Simplified Chinese)

quote:

"我还想强调一点,在非领海海域,中国军队舰机和其他国家舰机一样,都享有航行自由的权利。" - 吴谦

What Mr. Wu said is all military ships and planes in the world, including Chinese military, has FON as well as long as they are outside the territorial sea.

----------

Another US Naval War College article submitted by NI, but this time is all about Chinese robotic (anti-)submersible assets. You might like it kevin:

http://nationalinterest.org/feature/america-may-soon-fight-itself-underwater-war-china-21650

quote:

Strategists contemplating Asia-Pacific strategy quickly come to the conclusion that the undersea campaign is decisive. Fixed targets are vulnerable in the age of precision strike, meaning that air bases do not have a chance against a barrage of missiles. And with advances in ISR (Intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance) sensors and ever expanding missile ranges and power projection platforms, surface warships may not fare much better. Thus, it is no laughing matter to consider rumors that China has pulled off some breakthroughs in submarine quieting or that the PLA Navy submarine force has ambitions to enter both the Arctic and also the Atlantic as part of a much enhanced pattern of operational deployments.

But undersea warfare is not static and some have speculated that higher computer processing speeds combined with myriad new underwater sensors could render even remote parts of the ocean more and more transparent, undermining submarine stealth and survivability. Some of China’s recent achievements in these developments have been noted in this space. Another question hovering over the undersea warfare planner is the question of how important undersea robots, both unmanned undersea vehicles (UUVs) and remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) could be. Will they come to assume the same vital role that unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have assumed? A Dragon Eye column has dipped a toe into this discussion before by examining the role that the new U.S. Navy anti-submarine unmanned surface ship (USV) Sea Hunter (with an extraordinary range of 10,000 miles) could play in the evolving U.S.-China maritime rivalry. This column will dip another toe into this pond and explore several Chinese platforms in development of this nascent unmanned contest unfolding on and under the waves.

More details of Chinese UUVs at the link

Depending on Erdogan's mood, that could be the worst mistake Russia made in a while. Of course, it's more likely that a "crippled" system will be going to Turkey.

Neither China or Turkey can get 40N6 from Russia, its the only missile to provide very long range area defense, but Russia have to build them for themselves first.

Anyway, Henri made an article about Chinese DF-31AG, the distinctively different IRBM from DF-31A while still is smaller than rumored DF-41:

Yeah, Henri's article is interesting.
Seems like the DF-31AG's main improvement is its cross-country TEL and a longer ranged missile (visible through the structural reinforcements on the launch tube as required by higher pressue propellants).

quote:

Unlike its older DF-31A , which is placed on a semi-trailer 1S1-31A , which is pulled by a road tractor, this new DF-31AG uses a 16 × 16 Tractor-Erector-Launcher (TEL) Thus its off-road capability.

The launch tube has several circular reinforcements, suggesting more pressure during missile take-off. Changes in the propulsion system, at least for the 1st stage, could have been implemented. It is therefore not excluded that a new type of propellant of the N-15 family, which develops a specific pulse (ISP) higher than that of HPTB and NEPE used in the other ICBMs of the world.

It is probably for this reason that this new variant of Chinese mobile ICBM is called DF-31AG, which should read DF-31A (改), where 改 (Gaï) means "Modified" in Chinese.

While the propulsion system of the missile seems to have evolved, there is no indication that its size has changed. The DF-31 and its extended range version DF-31A are mono-ogive ICBMs, the first and second stage of which measure 2 meters in diameter and 1.4 meters for the third stage. The maximum effective range of DF-31A is 12,500 km.

[...]

Based on the first available elements today, it is believed that the DF-31AG would bring the following gains over previous versions:

-Improve the off-road capability of the carrier, therefore its mobility and survivability
-Increase the range of the missile at a lower cost, by changing its engines and reducing the structural mass

Therefore, the DF-31AG would be a project to upgrade the existing DF-31 and DF-31A to a more advanced standard without fundamentally changing the design. It is unclear, however, whether it is the DF-31B whose existence was revealed by the Americans after its shooting of September 25, 2014 .

To be continued.

Maybe this warrants a DB entry; DF-31AG with 6749 nmi instead of 6074 nmi of the DF-31A.

Some more Chinese ballistic missile news:

This photo has been recently posted on Chinese forums. It shows a new modified sail for the Type 032 Qing-class SSB (conventional-powered ballistic missile submarine), which is used as missile test platform in replacement for the sole Golf-class of the PLAN.

The sail of the Qing-class was previously flat. It is widely assumed that the Qing-class was used to test the JL-2 SLBM among other missiles. The new "hump" perhaps indicates that the Qing will now be used to test a new and larger SLBM. Probably the JL-3 SLBM, which would allow true intercontinental ranges to hit the CONUS from near Chinese waters without venturing out of the 1st Island Chain.
