Then came the fun stuff. The IJN had apparently tried an intercept during the night and got hung out to dry without much LR CAP. Oh oh ...

These were all penetrating shots with severe or critical damage messages. Looking good for the boys in blue here!!

Then the coup de Grace. A large strike hits the IJN main SCTF with BB Nagato and CA Mogami. I wish Mogami could have taken a few more of those 1000lb hits, but I'll take it!!
The one fish that hit caused major engine damage, so this may be something to pursue again tomorrow. I'll be careful, but there are a lot of Soviet subs in the area and there is an extra Marine fighter group and a DB group on the CVs. I'll be hunting to send these ships under.

Stick around??? Where are his carriers? Even IJN destroyers could deal crippling damage to a force so far from a friendly base.

Jan 30, 1942

SOVIETS: The naval battles over, the final blow of the day came as the Soviets got a 44:1 attack near Rashin and devastated the IJA troops. Eight units retreated, which means the border fortress is still hanging on. I'll hit it tomorrow and head for Rashin, which has another brigade sized unit and should fall easily.

This could really spell danger for the Japanese in Manchuria. Rashin would give us a very good base in MiG range of central Manchuria. It could also be changed to US command and any other Allied planes could use the base. Yikes!! Hurricanes here and some 4Es would be pretty fun to see.

I'll measure my enthusiasm for now, but it's looking good in the North.

DEI: The 4Es are still repairing. I've reorganised and filled out some groups, retired some others, not lost plane numbers but got some small groups out to spend time training while others filled out to full size and now are using all of the best pilots. This is for nailing Djambi in the next week, trying to wipe the remaining 150 oil points out, then aiming for Palembang.

The other positive on the ground is that Tarakan holds again easily in spite of intense bombing. The IJ naval guard units take big disablements again while Dutch forces hold strong. He'll have to land more here. That could hurt if supply lasts. He may just wait it out.

CHINA: Sweeps clear the air at Hong Kong. I'll add bombers tomorrow.

Five more DDs hit as well. I've got to count it up, but the IJN has to be struggling for good DDs at this point. Subs will be tough for them from now on.

Last sight of the KB was in the Dei, but of course they could have moved up. I know two of the CVs were here but Shokaku and Zuikaku groups were in the fighting at Shikuka, and one of them I think was destroyed at Toyohara. Shokaku 1 was in the fight there and a zero group was destroyed on the ground.

The Soryu zeros were at Singers just a few turns argo too. So I think the KB is down there or some of their fighter groups were landed in the DEI.

He only has about 4-5 undamaged IJN DDs here it seems, but of course more could be lurking around Tokyo/Yokohama.

It's a gamble, but I'll try with the Warspite and company to hit the retiring wounded and stay in LR CAP range at least.

Unless he redistributed them before Russia activated, a huge part of the Manchukuo garrison was at Mutankiang. I think what is happening at the fort near Rashin is that he sent a lot of units via strat mode to Yenki and then switched to move mode to march down to the border fort. The Arty and Mortar units likely only needed one day to pack and one day to unpack for this trip, while the infantry and tank units (if any were still there) would need at least two days, maybe three days for packing and again for unpacking.

Thus you ended up hitting all that artillery and mortars, perhaps when they had just arrived in the hex and had not switched to combat mode. This would explain the "Supply (-)" because the units just arrived and supply flow had not yet adjusted to their new location. But if my guess is correct there will be a lot of AV power coming from Yenki to stop you. IMO Russian tanks are the best way to stop the Japanese at this point because their anti-armour values are so poor.

He actually had a problem with a massive garrison allocation at some base, I think he said Mukden, which kept most of his troops there. He's had ample time to move them though, and sent some quite far forward already. This is somehow just a blind spot he didn't think of getting to yet, it seems. It looks like a division or two are now in Yenki, but a few turns ago it was looking like a brigade with some arty. The ones here had arrived at least a few days before, so should have been in combat mode easily.

I do see him now shifting more forces around to help. We'll see if it's in time!

Jeff is taking some time with the next turn. I don't want to report until I've seen the turn file. Sorry for the delay. It's an interesting (and somewhat scary) turn.

Interesting is an understatement. This is the most unconventional few opening months of the GC I have ever seen! Fascinating, and kudos to both of you for not shying away from the risky stuff!

+1

I cannot even fathom leaving a USN CV Task force off the coast of the Home Islands after a mini-successful 'Doolittle raid'.

Both players are commended !

The honorable crsuutton underscores my own point as well ; the war is over. Simply keep punching the same shoulder.

I sincerely hope both opponents continue for some time; but there is no way for Japan to sustain TOE upgrades, supply and wage offensive operations in Burma / Manchuria / "inner co-prosperity sphere" while at the same time building resources to upgrade industry / R&D / stockpile for the home islands. All this while stategic bombing the home islands from Soviet Airspace (with or without great results) ?

I would note - just to emphasis the point.. all the offensive operations are in Singers / DEI / China... so whats up in the Coral Sea ? Whats up in New Guinea ? Whats up in the Gilberts and Marshalls ? If the empire is there (assumption) how are those troops being supplied and fortified ? Probably not at all.

It may be foolhardy, but I have to think Halsey would have pursued for a day here with a severely wounded BB nearby and very low DL the previous day. Anyway, I-oats suck, but without revealing to much it looks like the danger is not mortal so far. I will get outta dodge now. I do have LBA support from a nearby (Soviet) base which is part of my thinking here.

I still think it's going to be tough, but Japan will have some successes still. There are a lot of unaccounted divisions available right now. If they're no in the PI and not attacking Singers and not in China or Manchuria, where are they?

SUBS: Damn. The I-157 starts the turn for Japan with a fish in the side of Sara. She's got 19 float damage and can make good speed so should be able to get out if no other boats are encountered. Have two dedicated ASW TFs here and the Soviets are sending in another. An I-boat also sinks an xAKL on the Canadian west coast. Good to see them here rather than chasing my CVs.

PACIFIC: The CVs near Japan whiff, not even getting a sighting of the damaged ships from the previous day, and are swarmed by well escorted Betties. The results are predictable, and Halsey decides to flank out to hopefully remove the CVs from any more strikes. The Warspite is actually worst off with 39 float damage and some to engines, limiting to 4 hexes per phase, but if she can get out of range should be fine to make it home. Finger crossed for tomorrow.

The Russians will try to help out by sending in their fast DDs for a bombardment on Bihoro, where the main strike originated. I'll also put on some night bombing of the airfield. Even a few hits could lower morale and affect any strike that come out, likely reducing their effective range. No Kuril bases have strike ability other than for FP or patrols, but hopefully we can handle the little FPs and big Mavis if they come.

DEI: P-38s hit Djambi again, wiping out another 10 or so A6M2. They get a 5:1 on the day. I'm wondering if pilots skill is beginning to drop on the Japanese side. I'll keep it going and add some 4E to hit the oil tomorrow.

It's a new month, and while not much extra is coming the Dutch get some Hurri IIb which cold really help here. I'd like to focus on Sumatra, working on the airframe pools and pilot reserves, then after the current supply mission for Banjarmasin props that base up into some usefulness, begin sweeping and hitting Balikpapan hard. The Dutch have NO engineers, so I have to use bought out US and RAF base forces to fix up fields everywhere.

CHINA: Two tank regiments have moved to Kiuchuan in the Chinese West and our two Corps are 2-3 days out. There is a base force and one fort in the x2 territory, and our bombers struck for 4-5 vehicles on the day. More are now in place and I'll try to thwart this incursion with air strength before the Corps can arrive to save the day. A base force is also coming up the road so there is the possibility of trapping these units or bombing them to dust if they can't win the base. Pray for good weather, although we are bombing from three separate bases, so something should fly.

SOVIETS: The industry bombing takes to the night while the moon is bright and some fires are started at Mukden and Harbin. I'll keep working the bases and eventually this will all accumulate to hurt the Japanese economy white a bit I think.

The ground forces kill off the border fortress and will now move to Rashin. He seems to be sending a bunch of troops into the coastal base next door, so we may not be able to get there before it's built up to strength. The IJA forces in Koutou will be cut off tomorrow by our forward tanks if they don't rail out immediately. They have movement showing, but not sure when they were set. There is one division outside the base which is looking pretty vulnerable now as bombing commences on it and it's main supply line is about to be cut.

SIGINT: Some interesting notes here. The Japanese are still moving troops to Malaya, so this campaign may be a long one. I've just loaded up a fast 17 knot xAK and will try to begin sneaking supply into Singers while he's not looking.

3/144th Infantry Regiment is loaded on xAK Nishimi Maru moving to Kota Bharu.

Pretty good day in the air again. Lots of Wildcat ops losses, probably due to the days they've been on CAP duty here. Gotta get out and replenish, although there are NO USN fighters available until the F4F-4 begins production in a month.

BB losses

Here is the beginning of a record of ship losses to date. The BBs at PH were hit hard, and Force Z was used hard, with Repulse going down near Balikpapan after a massive bombardment of that base. It did open up a lot of opportunities for strategic work in the area so it may have been worth the loss. The PoW made it out and is at Cape Town repairing.

The four remaining BBs in PH will stay there for an extended period rather than trying to negotiate a return to the West Coast for a faster repair. I'd rather not risk them.

I don't believe these Japanese BBs are lost, just injured. Yamashiro is still hopefully on her way through a net of subs at some point to get home. I think she's stopped off near Jolo to get us off the track, but not entirely sure.

CV losses

This still hurts.

Akagi was hit by a sub but should be fine. Ryujo however will eventually be on this list, as she was confirmed sunk by aircraft losses on the day.

CA/CL Losses

I've lost a few too many USN CA/CL. The last few CL around Singers hurt as I couldn't put down the damaged IJN CAs, which have now vanished. This is the story of the game. IJN ships winning battles, decisively sinking Allied ships, then limping off to be repaired. Damn.

A few more might be on this list, and the most recent a bit of a gift in the North, sunk by CV air judging from the Petes lost on the ground today!

DD losees

This is the one area the IJN is really hurting. Of the starting 90-100 DD/TB/E they get, he's lost 52!! This will mean subs could have a lot of success in the future outside the IJN ASW air umbrella. There may even be a few more to add here after recent air strikes and mine hits at Singers.

The Allies have lost 42 DDs, not a small amount for sure, but many are the four stackers and old Dutch and RN DDs that just aren't ready for a fight with the new IJN models.

The KB alone should eventually need 20-25 DDs for escort and ASW, and that doesn't leave too many for SCTFs and none for fast tanker or troop ship escorts.

SUB losses

Pretty minor of both sides so far. The I-boats had been pretty quiet until last turn.

SINGAPORE

A report on the base. It's Feb 1. This is taking a while for Japan. Allied strength here is growing. Supply is still being produced. Forts are increasing. Commanders have ALL been switched out for major HQ and infantry units, as well as some AA and Singers Fortress.

This is a base he has tried to work on in several ways. First through air power, suffering once the P-38s arrived to get at the sweepers and the P-40E and P-39D set up shop to hit bombers. He hasn't tried anything but sweeps here for many weeks.

The BB bombardment were hurting, but the last addition of mines by CM Abdiel proved decisive. A TF of 2 BB and 7 DDs tried for a hit and got nailed. I'll keep adding to the pile and continue the close in patrols of the 25 Dutch, USN and RN subs now here. I've also just added Dutch PT boats to the base!! Been trying to get them here for a while, and finally sneaked some in. I find PTs can really help lure ships into the mine fields.

Now if the troops experience levels have time to increase after prepping fully, this will really be a tough spot. In another month it could have 1300 AV and 5 forts. Yikes!

Each side is short on DDs in '42. This is going to hurt Jeff in long run. As Allies, the loss of the two modern American CLs hurt the most.

What has Japan gained in Oil centers? The more you can hurt him there, the shorter the war will be.

Is this based on scenario 1, or 2? With scenario 1, he's going to be short on DDs right quick.

He doesn't have is Magwe, which should auto-flip very soon. I plan to bomb it ASAP.

In addition, he has lost 98 from Djambi, about another 109 from Palembang. I think 59 from Balikpapan and 27 from Samarinda. He's lost all 30 from Shikuka, and may still lose the base. From Rashin 4 have been hit, and I think some also at Yamagata and Asahikawa.

He hasn't taken Medan yet, Tarakan or Babo and Boela.

Ok. So I have the next replay and CR. Still won't report on everything until I see the run, but it looks like the CVs get out of the major area of danger around Hokkaido. He does spot them, but I sent in a bombardment using the Soviet DDs at what seemed his biggest field in range, Bihoro. The red lines of previous attacks showed that this was the origination point for the Nettie strike. I wish I had some more of these!! (Although it's good I don't have to pronounce their names anytime soon!)

He spotted us close to Etorofu in the night, and out here during the day. I tried to head in a direction I thought would not be the most likely. Also, there is fuel unloading at Petropavlovsk that I may need after a flank run.

In another interesting development, the IJA tanks do not attack at Kiuchuan out in Western China. There are two units installed there now. About 80 of our bombers fly and can't get a single hit. I'm hoping his supply is at least being stretched by these guys. I flew at 2k but the bombers are using only half loads so I'll move them up tomorrow and try again. All bases have adequate supply they're flying from. Gotta hit the tanks!!
