Anime you say?

When it comes to favorite movies for me it's hand down Ghost in the Shell and Ghost in the Shell: Innocence movies as well cyberpunk being my favorite genre and they where very thought provoking when I was done watching. Honorable mentioning of some other titles of movies I liked a lot would be Jin-Roh, Sword of the Stranger and Wings of Honneamise: Royal Space Force.

As for the Series to name a few of my favorites those would be Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 1 & 2, Psycho Pass Season 1, Vision of Escaflowne, Code Geass: lelouch of the rebellion & R2, Fate/Zero, Black Lagoon, Cowboy Bebop, Full Metal Panic, Future Diary and Hellsing Ultimate.

Now ofcourse I have guilty pleasures like the Mind F--k that is Evangelion but also things I ignore they exist like the Ghost in the Shell RISE OVA's, the movie that followed suit after the OVA's and the live action abomination. Now it's fair to note that I haven't bothered watchin the new anime movie of Ghost in the Shell and the live action one as the first well from what I could gather of the OVA's in which the writer turned all characters into a running joke and plot was left to be desired I wanted to prevent further damage done to my holy grail of franchises. The Live action, well knowing Hollywood they would trade in plot for action and not be thought provoking in the slightest so why would I even bother.

In that case, I recommend you following:
A.D. Police
Bubblegum Crisis
Parasite Dolls
Mardock Scramble & sequels

Do you know any good war anime & manga? I have already typed out here most of the good stuff I know of.

[edit]
One more:
Saga of Tanya the Evil. Mages using guns!!?

I've seen A.D. Police but that was really really long ago and knowing it's related to Bubblegum Crisis and so is Parasite Dolls for that matter I'll have to check those out. Probably going re-watching A.D. Police in the process as well.

Tow Ubukata, I do not like his work. I've seen the 2 flicks and it stopped me from watching the third. He's also responsible for Ghost in the Shell:Arise and he further managed to dissapoint me with Psycho Pass season 2.

You're well informed. Bubblegum Crisis was first, A.D. Police is kind of prequel to it, and Parasite Dolls is the new one. Is also Bubblegum Crash, but that one has bad reputation, though my only gripe is sub-par voice acting. You could also be interested about Pandora in the Crimson Shell : Ghost Urn. Manga is from Masamune Shirow (best known by Ghost in the Shell), though much of the artwork (at least the characters) is drawn by someone else. Shirow-san couldn't get it right, and he had enough balls to admit it.

Ah, the forum has an anime thread. Most excellent.
Tell me, has anyone here watched "Irresponsible Captain Tylor"?

Great majority of fantasy works are ... how Frodo put it? Something about tales about great adventures, heroic deeds, and whatnot. The stuff like Hercules (Heracles?), Knights of the round table, and Lord of the Rings. Goblin Slayer is almost like fantasy equivalent of All Quiet on the Western Front, Apocalypse Now Redux, and Stalingrad, which leaves several (human) characters raped, dead, and broken in various ways.

I have read more of this and paid my respects to author by paying for Kindle versions. Manga blends together fantasy and realistic combat: armor isn't useless, and Goblin Slayer pierces goblin's helmet with a pick instead of with a sword slash. Also weapons wear down after repeated strikes. I want a JRPG like this! Can you recommend me any?

Yes they are. But you need to tell why.

GIRLS und PANZER has already been discussed. Death Note is supernatural drama about youth, who joins police to fight against crime and he rise to position of authority. He is aided by shinigami's notebook, which he uses to kill criminals simply by writing on it. I have read bit of the manga and seen the anime movie which is shortened version of the series.

I'd like to talk a little bit about Hayao Miyazaki. I'm a big fan of his movies (I can't even name these as animes or cartoons), think he's genius and worth remembering and talking about. Can't say I have a single favorite movie, but, I think, the best one is Princess Mononoke. What's your favoritefrom Mr. Miyazaki's works?

In this week I have binged through Gunota ga Mahou Sekai ni Tensei ****ara, Gendai Heiki de Guntai Harem wo Tsukucchaimashita!? It's a mouthful, so let's call it Gunota for short. Isekai story of reincarnation variety with few interesting twists. So Japanese guy is stabbed to death and he is reborn in a fantasy world ruled by magicians (does this sound familiar?). He makes firearms and recruits number of monster girls to wield them. There are a number of cliches and tropes you'd expect, but good number of them are averted and subverted. This guy even has interest for romance and he proposes to #1 girl! And she befriends with other girls close to the guy! You didn't see that coming, did you?

Even though he has some magical assets to work with, making of guns isn't that easy: his first gun (S&M M10) explodes when fired and perfecting assault rifle (AK47) takes him several years. Gun fights are comparable to Black Lagoon: equally ridiculous. Racial traits are used to good extent: loli vampire with a rifle (Remington Model 700P) in high ground is VERY bad news. As one beastman words it:
quote:

We're stuck.
If we move even an inch...
We become a target.
It's just limbs for now,
But we don't know when she'll decide to start shooting to kill.
A chill, just like the Grim Reaper brushing his hand by your cheek...
And that Reaper is...
Just like...
an angel
The mistress has no talent?
Bullshit! She's worse than the master!

This may not be equal to The familiar of Zero, but certainly is above the average in isekai genre. Recommended!

WARNING!
Contains gun porn!

[edit]
What the Frak? Why does forum censor the title?

First episode of Goblin Slayer is now available for free to unregistered users and you need to wait up for 2nd episode for a week. I tell you this though: Goblin Slayer don't fight against armoured opponent with a sword; instead he uses pick to punch through a helmet. Also his own armour stops a dagger in the first episode. Armour wins against sword but lose to pick; this is reality many shows & movies miss but Goblin Slayer nails it. Adult age is 15 years which is a medieval standard. Do you notice other interesting details?

Shad's first impressions about Vinland Saga anime. He makes a comparison to viking sagas. Considering that, the anime don't seem so much over the top (compared to sagas). Manga is less exaggerated. Amazon streams anime.

This TV tropes article lists surprisingly many hard scifi anime and manga. My contribution to the page is most of the content under second anime and manga folder. Moonlight Mile in particular has some interesting takes on the future of space warfare, and manly men doing manly things. I recommend that one to you old geezers. And MrsWargamer might get some Mr. Fan Service out of it too

Something to add: Rocket Girls is surprisingly hard scifi despite of teenage girls riding rockets to space. At least it has a somewhat plausible reason: the girls are small and light weight for small rockets where adult man twice the weight don't fit in. Quite good too and got me singing Fly on Yurika Morita (seriously)

I have just watched through anime Violet Evergarden. It's about a child soldier recovering from the war & related trauma while learning to cope with a civilian life. Veteran's assessment about it.

Why do they say "**** episode 10"? I liked that one.

I loved anime with full-length films by Miyazaki like Totoro, Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle. These are unsurpassed animated masterpieces that keep you warm from year to year. Manga is also good and perfect for the fast pace of life when you can always go back to your favorite story, and turn on the anime in the evening to relax in adventures with your favorite characters. For me, manga and anime are great symbioses.

Amazon has banned (more) manga and other Japanese literature. Those with an account, I urge you to go to give feedback about it. I already did it with using a word "discrimination".
