Land Movement (cont)

Soviet Union
South of the Priyat, the Soviets try and trade space for time...but they are running out of space - the Dneipr is not that far away. Will they have any units to defend it? As with Minsk in the north, so Odessa in the south is designated a Fortress city.

Air Transport: None
Debark:

United States
The lead elements of the US 15th Army Group land in northern Finland.

We'll take it from the bottom (ohhh eerr missus!) and start with the Indian Army. A pincer attack is mounted east of Hyderabad by the 16th Infantry Corps and the 21st Mechanised Corps at odds of 5:1 no modifiers.

The Partisans prove difficult to dislodge in their forest terrain and although destroyed, cause huge casualties to the Indian infantry.

Next are the Chinese. 3:1 No modifiers. I assume that this will be assault?

Yes please.

I was half-way out of my seat in joy when I saw that 1 roll on the E-mail. Then my eyes caught site of the location. Oh well, good time to use one of those up for the Allies .

The Japanese 6th Army easily fight off a woeful attack by Mao's Eastern Army. The Chinese leader is no military genius... fractional odds fail and another 1 is thrown.

Damn I got rid of the picture before getting a chance to post - sorry . The Chinese lose a MIL and a CAV.

Over to Manchuria now and the attack on the Soviet right flank first. This is 3:1 +2 and the Soviets choose blitzkrieg. The attack is poorly co-ordinated between the tanks and infantry and although the Soviets manage to destroy the stubborn defenders, they are thrown into chaos.

The fractional odds fail and a 2 is thrown.

Last attack of the turn is in the mountains of Manchuria and is a 4:1 +1. I assume the Japanese will choose assault?

The Manchurian defenders in the mountains are well dug in, but are spooked by news that their supply line back to Mukden has been cut. Some of the more inexperienced troops were therefore quick to withdraw and this led to a rout that was gratefully exploited by the elite mountain troops.

The final attack sees the fractional odds fail yet again but an 8 was thrown for the combat.

The air combat doesn't go particularly well for the Allies.

The second bomber cleared through was Allied choice. I selected the lowest factor bomber (the 3 factor B5N1), rather than delay to bounce a decision request across.

The Hurricane was returned to Singapore.

Hope this is okay. If not, will redo.

Well going for A2A was always risky, but with a +4 and -3 I figured I would kill a couple of aircraft even if some of the attackers then got through - and the Japanese can't afford the losses. But then.....

Orm will be distinctly unimpressed

Yes, Singapore is fine.

The Japanese bombers run into a pretty furious AA barrage. Many losses are caused and a large number of the survivors drop their ordnance too far from target.

The surviving aircraft with the bravest pilots press home their attack towards the alpha target. The American CV Hornet looms squarely in their sights.

Multiple torpedo hits include penetrations of fuel storage bunkers. The resulting fires spread rapidly to ammunition lockers and the big flat-top is rapidly reduced to a burnt out irreparable hulk.

How do the Allies wish to place the first D?

The USS California and USS Ranger disappear amongst a curtain of explosions and spray. Naval commanders fear for the worst but as the dust settles the ships emerge shaken but not stirred.

Any preference for the remaining A?

USS Wee Vee and USS Louisville suffer some chipped paint from spent shrapnel.

As the surviving Japanese aircraft return to their carriers and silence descends, a faint ethereal whisper is heard.

"Never disturb a Hornet's nest....."

You didn't quote the entire saying AllenK:

Never disturb a Hornet's nest unless there is a numbnuts in charge of said nest - in which case you can poke the thing into oblivion without fear of being stung (Anon 1798).
