Maybe a noob question... But here it is:

Is it possible to create an intel gathering mission for subs? I mean... I can create a support mission for AEW planes and use active or passive systems. Can I do the same with subs?

What I'm trying to do is to use my subs to use their ELINT to gather intel from the coast. Is it better to create a mission or to do it manually. And how to do it correctly?

Any idea?

Thanks in advance!

Yeah a bunch of ways you could do this. Key pieces are if you want to actually use the subs sensors to do this you need to come to periscope depth to get visual or ESM hits. Please check to be sure your sub actually has ESM if you'd like to do this.

Simplest way is to create a support mission and make sure you set custom depths for transit and station for subs in the mission editor dialog. This would allow you to transit deep etc and then come to periscope to attempt ESM hits etc.

A little more complex way is using lua to script depth and speed changes or perhaps adding messages to interpret data etc. You can add teh sub to different missions or change mission parameters if need be.

Mike

Not a noob question at all. I actually find ISR with submarines to be fairly challenging for several reasons. I'd use the simplest method that Mike described, but here's some things you need to think about:

*Mast mounted sensors are limited by their horizon. In order to observe a coast you probably need to get pretty close to it.

*Getting close to the coast means shallow water. Shallow water means you need to be very careful about navigation. Plot your way points so that you don't find your submarine exposing more than a mast by accident.

*Shallow water might be mined to deter sneaky submarines from doing exactly what you're trying to do.

Have you thought about exactly what kinds of targets you're trying to scout?
