I bought the game a few hours ago and I'm loving it already.

This is the kind of game I've been looking for (albeit not too actively ) ever since I read an Advanced Third Reich AAR in a magazine 25 years ago.

A big shout out to the developers for this fantastic game.

Now I need to understand what I'm doing... It'll probably take me another 25 years

Thanks Vichyssoise and welcome aboard

Glad to hear you are enjoying it and please don't hesitate to spread the word as every little bit helps in our very niche market.

Hubert

Best way to learn how to play well, once you've grasped the basic mechanics, is to play a game against a more experienced human - you'll probably lose badly, but will learn a lot in the process

Especially if your opponent will engage in a narrative about your possible alternative moves, guiding as well as playing.

Thanks for the good advice everyone. I'll stick to the easiest level for a while until I've read the whole manual (very well done by the way).

The manual is very nice, but a few things are out of date, e.g. about how "surprise" works for land units, a whole bunch of stuff has change for naval movement/surprise/AP remaining after attack and some of the dates and other information for Decision Events are different. Best to check the patch notes too...

Which would be easier with a larger space for comms.

Yeah, but you can communicate using PMs in the forum, or by email, at least.

Vichyssoise, great news that you found this little gem.
Feel at home, sit down, take a cookie.
:)

This is the real deal, you found solid gold here with Hubert and Bill.

Many of us are following this series since nearly two decades, and this game got better and better with every relaase (full game or add-on), and to our great joy, the developers have their ears on the heartbeat of this community.

If you have some interest in older releases, try SC WW1 or SC Global Gold, or wait just like the rest of us on the next release of this fantastic game.

This one may be obvious, but where do I find said patch notes? They aren't in the patch zip folder.

Tell me about it. I can't stop playing the damn thing. It's too addictive. I'm still cutting my teeth trying to defeat France in 3-4 turns tops to learn the mechanics. Great fun.

The party is far from over and is getting better all the time!

Cheers,

Allow me to bump my own thread.
First and foremost, I would like to express my profound displeasure at the developers for making a game so damn enjoyable and so thoroughly addictive, so much that I spent a whole day off (9 hours straight) playing the game, something that brought me way back to my college years. Boy was that fun! Not sure the missus agrees though. In fact, it's nothing short of criminal. And I'd still be playing if the Allies had kept on fighting.

After an initial period spend gathering much needed advice and information and (sort of) "mastering" the Axis' East-West-East swing of 39-41, I've finally completed a full campaign vs the Allied AI on intermediate.
If I may toot my own newbie horn, I earned a Major win when the Allies sued for peace on December 31, 1943!
Luck payed its part: The Allies helped Finland win the Winter War before it swung back to the Axis, I attacked the USSR when it was still under 60% mobilization, Spain joined the Axis, took Gibraltar (that helped a lot!) and successfully defended North Africa when Operation Torch failed to overcome early troubles as the US HQ ran into a U-boat (coming off the Azores after a refit) and was subsequently sunk.
The highlight was a successful paratroopers drop on Moscow! (the other Fallschirmjäger corps had been destroyed following a disastrous drop on Benghazi). The Italians (AI controlled) did their best to frustrate the German High Command at times, but provided useful manpower when needed.

All of this tells me that I should try a higher level of difficulty (I'm still too wet behind the ears to venture into PBEM). Speaking of which, is there any real difference in game play besides the obvious AI bonuses?

Please consider this customer a happy one. Damn you!

Great to hear it, and please pass on my apologies to your beloved for taking you away from her for so long.

The only difference in PBEM is the lack of AI related scripts/bonuses. I love PBEM and it is a good way of spreading your playing time so you shouldn't get in too much trouble at home, so I'd strongly recommend it.

It doesn't take terribly long before you need to start playing with others in order to get better.
You know just like... sex.

Apologies accepted. I'm apparently on probation though.

My question was more AI-related, but I found the answer in the manual (note to self: always read it! ). Too early for PBEM, I'd be about as (in)competent as Gen. Huntzinger.

Might as well have to do it some day... re: the probation bit above.
