The generic answer is: because this is the AE board and even when I wrote "M-16" I knew someone would also recognize details like 'the tripod nuts on the MG' or 'the number of cross laces on the boots' or ...

The bang bang stick that the soldier on the right is carrying (along with the two children) is similar to the one the soldier in the background and the soldier leaning against the tree has. This appears to be an M16A1 (I think I erroneously identified the rifle as an M16A2 in my previous post). This distinctive combat rifle was not in service at the time of the Second World War when Okinawa was the site of a major fight.

When dating combat pictures, I look for details in the firearms and uniforms of the soldiers involved. That helps me date the time frame that they were likely taken.

There is a discordant note in this image-the inclusion of the bipod M1919A4/6 light machine gun in the lower left frame. These were in widespread service in WWII, post 1943. They were largely supplanted by the M60 in the LMG capacity in Vietnam.

I think it's an A-1. A-2 came very late (in fact few troops in Vietnam had it late in the war , and the USMC (except for special guard assignments like the embassy) were gone by then. You can really tell as in both cases the "assist button" (the big button you hit when the @##$% thing jams) is hidden. But you are right about the flash hider. The browning light machine gun was used by the Marines till quite late in the war. I'd say this photo (based upon the uniforms and armor) was relatively early in the war , probably pre-Tet offensive. The USNC always held on to old gear as long as possible. At this point they were still using UH-34's as helos (and used the same browning), had reluctantly given up their beloved M-14's and were just getting the M-60.

Yes it was. But look at how long this one is. There may have been a post war version that was longer , but any of the world war two versions I've seen or handled didn't extend that far.
