Jul/Aug 1942 Impulse: 1 (Allies) Rail Movement: Soviet Union A factory is railed from Kharkov to Baku. Land Movement: Chinese Communists Reports have reached Mao Tse-Tung that the Chinese Nationalists have launched a series of air strikes against the Japanese 12th Army. This army has been doggedly keeping a huge number of Communist forces tied down north of Sian. Mao believes that this is some sort of Nationalist trap, but his commanders on the ground advise him that the Japanese army has suffered badly. Mao order his Western Army, spearheaded by the 4th Infantry Army, to move into position to attack - and for any units not required, to be sent east to aid his own exposed position. The 3rd Mountain Corps are ordered into the mountains east of Taiyuan in case the Japanese decide to launch an offensive from Manchuria. Only the Cavalry Division is available at present to support Mao and, rather than take any chances, he orders a straightening of the line west of Suchow pending reinforcements. Soviet Union Far Eastern Front In the east Koniev orders the 3rd Cavalry Corps east toward the coast, while on his right flank 14th and 39th Rifle Armies are tasked with crossing the Liao River to pressurise Mukden. This force also have the services of the Vladivostok Militia, which is ordered to support their northern flank. Finally, the Irkutsk Militia arrive in Chita, from where they can be railed to Manchuria in due course. Black Sea Front This front gets a reinforcement in the shape of the Stalingrad Militia. This allows the 43rd Rifle Army to guard the entrance to the Crimea. The weak 4th Rifle Army is moved up to the Taman Peninsular, while the Stalino Militia moves into Sevastopol. 2nd Ukrainian Front (Timoshenko) Timoshenko continues to withdraw eastwards and orders his armoured units - 1st and 3rd Tank Armies and 3rd Mechanised - to concentrate on the River Donets. Bryansk Front (Yeremenko) The 1st Ukrainian Front, as expected, is broken up and Yeremenko takes charge of a new Front designed to protect the southwestern approaches to the capital. Western Front are denuded of their armour and Yeremenko concentrates the armour now under command - 4th Guard Tank Army, 2nd Tank Army and 2nd Mechanised Army - in the forests around Gomel. Western Front The Western Front are ordered to disperse units into the various forests dotted around their front. This hive of activity is designed to hide the fact that STAVKA has absolutely no idea what to do..... Northwest Front (Zhukov) Such has been the pace of withdrawal that the Leningrad Front has now been subsumed into Zhukov's Northwest Front. Not much to report here except the 16th Rifle Army has been moved south to protect the right wing of his front - its place being taken by the newly arrived 1st Guard Cavalry Corps. Zhukov can only dream of creating an armoured reserve, but he simply does not have the boots on the ground to be able achieve this. His only two armoured formations are mechanised anyway and his motorised forces have to serve in the front line. Air Transport: None Land Combat: Chinese Communists Gents what rule have I forgotten? Why is this not 10:1?
