In the Aleutians we shock and take Amchitka!! This is good since it's definitive now that the IJN has moved up here in strength. At least two CVs and a few SCTFs. The Marines will keep pounding away and hopefully ruin this regiment and big base force.

On the 17th finally everyone flew!!! The results were not as spectacular, but did the job of keeping Palembang closed and hitting the remaining airframes on the field. The nighttime bombardments were again very effective, so now I can breahe and rest the ships for a few days at Singers. There are something like 65-70 ships listed as in the port at Palembang, so I'll go for those in the next few turns too.

For the 18th though I'll revisit some airfields and ports on Borneo. I think some more ships may be hiding in Kuching, and the Singkawang fields might be used to hit the area and protect ships moving in, so those will be the target of a bombardment.

The oil at Boela took another 2 hits in spite of some LR CAP showing up. The oil there looks to be down to 8 (18)

The best thing during the turn happened late in the day phase when S-18 put two fish into the retreating Takao!! Yes!! Finally getting a chance to put down a badly damaged CA. The messages of severe flooding and hull penetration suggest this is a mortal blow, but I'll send a few more Dutch and USN boats in to patrol both sides of this TF's trajectory to make sure. With Palembang also being shut this means CL Natori and possibly a few more DDs might be caught in the net, along with CA Myoko at Pontiniak. This could be a turning point in the naval battles of the DEI. The question is will he throw another set of ships into the meat grinder or concede the seas until the KB can be reformulated to control some space here?

This pic should give an idea of the precarious state the Japanese find themselves in here now. The airfields at Palembang are closed, the oil has already suffered and will be targeted again soon, and the port is full of ships waiting for slaughter. It's the a reverse PI where he could run them out in single ship TFs. I'll be sending the occasional TF across from Singers to Batavia just to see what might be out there.

In the Aleutians the USN hits an AMC unloading at Agatu. Not bad. The Marines keep pounding at the Amchitka units, and should have them erased soon. All major shipping is moving back to Kodiak in case the CVs here decide to make a run. Dutch has no field and LR CAP is not enough against what is probably at least the Shokakau and Zuikaku, plus possibly another CV/CVL.

In Soviet territory the Hailar army continues to wreak havoc on the IJA, hitting the already weakened 14th and the newly arrived 20th divisions with a shock attack in the clear. IJA losses are massive, and although the Soviets also lost a chunk of tanks and infantry squads, the IJA losses are around 570+ devices destroyed plus another 340+ disabled. The Soviets only lose 65 devices destroyed and 470+ disabled.

Hopefully the pace of action will slow for a bit to recover some of the disabled squads and these troops can fan out across the plains to continue to hem in the IJA in forward positions.

Haha! Thanks, firstly, it's helpful to think about what I would hate to have happen if I were playing Japan. I've played enough good players on that side I have a few examples in mind. I always feared losing the oil, having something slow down my expansion, and having the IJN attritted early.

Secondly, by throwing everything forward I can use it when it's most useable. The P-40E has a short shelf-life in this game when Japan can make infinite Tojos, Georges and eventually Franks. In my last allied game I had hundreds sitting in pools in 43 unused. I'm trying to think of how to use every last airframe, unit and ship I can right now to cause Lowpe some problems. My Vincents flown in from So Pac just wiped out a few oil points in the DEI. Those were never anything but trainers before (and for most players) but they carry a 1,000lb bomb. Why not use them?

If I can hit the oil there is no better use for all of this stuff that will happen in 43-44 when he has a much stronger airforce and more AA with higher forts and bigger airfields. Now is the time.

So this report is the reason I'm hitting Kuching tomorrow. Any report of a CV in port within range of 4Es must be acted on I feel!!

Even if it's a CVL or CS that is great, and there are 10 ships listed. Something is there. There should be CAP up but from what it's looked like recently around here, not too much. He did fly out the CAP from Palembang to somewhere though, I'm just not sure where.

We saw what was reported as a single CV TF leave the area a few days ago, but who knows? Also, the TF near Miri is ASW as is the one at Kuching. The one at Pontiniak is listed as CA, so there is a sub present, and a few more patrolling between there and Singkawang.

The 18th opens with a surprise!! Nearly a very good surprise, but not quite. The S-47, one of 6 S-boats arriving in the North a few turns ago, ran smack into the mini-KB!

Always nice to see an IJN CV filling the combat screen in the night phase. No hits from 4 fish, but that's gotta give him the jitters. I've got about 10-12 boats total running up here and they're going to swarm the known position and expected path of the mini-KB for tomorrow. I think he'll go a bit North and forward to threaten Allied shipping and be ready for a moe toward Dutch, possibly.

A naval guard takes Agattu near Attu at the far end of the Aleutians. He doesn't have much invested out here, and that's a dot base, so it'll be hard to hold onto unless the CVs stay involved. If they do that's a win for the Allies because they're not in the DEI. If they don't I will take the remaining Aleutians and move toward the Soviet islands Japan took, the continue to the Kuriles as I can.

In the DEI it's another busy day around Palembang, and a very interesting strike on Kuching.

In the night our DMS take out a few handfuls of mines at Palembang. USN cruisers then run into DD Samidare and put her under mercilessly. I'll have to total the DDs destroyed in the past few weeks. It feels like a lot!

DM Pruitt from this TF then ran into a mine in Palembang and sank immediately.

During the day a lot of strikes hit ships at Palembang, setting fires. Only a few hits on the runways, so I'll have to make sure more planes target the fields tomorrow.

The 4Es hit Kuching and the last few strike packages got through unscathed to drop on ... BB Haruna!! Only 7 deck armor hits, but fires are started, and really, if system damage goes up from fires it could still be a while to repair a BB. He also has to think about whether to remove the ships there now, making them vulnerable to subs. We also hit and a big AV ,Kamikawa Maru.

Tomorrow I have to put some 4Es on the Djambi oil and she on Palembang fields, so these ships will have to wait.

The Dutch did manage to clear the rail line from Oosthaven to Palembang so we can now send the Indian Division, a USMC tank regiment and another brigade to Praebemolih.

The Soviets wiped out an arty unit blocking the path to Tsitsahar and will now continue. We've killed off at least 5 heavy art units now. I know he can just refill/buy them back, but that has to have a significant short term effect, since these are really powerful and he won't have them ready for the next month or two of battles.

Our units chasing the pocketed troops near Mishan will be overstacking the swamp hex next turn. I don't know if that means they'll not get enough supply in to attack, but we should at least double the IJA units here and they are moving, so have no forts. I'd really like to wear the down and slow them down.

Here's a shot of No Pac now. I'll keep trying to corral the mini-KB with subs and the rest is cleared out with troops building forts and fields. I have some DBs flying in, and I will try to strike if he hangs around long enough. a good 50 fighter escort might just punch them through the mini-KB CAP.

FORTS 5!!!

This has been a goal for a while. That first DA will now be a doozy that might rival the crossing. Also shown here is the supply situation which is at almost 35k, going up tomorrow and up again on the 21st as two more TFs arrive. Should top 50k, maybe up to 55k by the 22nd. That is good for another two months easily, but I'll keep trying to add more. I've got 10-12 freighters waiting in port in Java and more circling out beyond Singkawang looking for the right moment to move in.

The BBs keep up the bombardment at Singers. Nice to hit four different divisions with this one.

The CL Abukuma ventured deep into the IO to hit two medium sized xAPs and an AM near Ceylon. Luckily they were empty. I've diverted the more precious TFs to what I think are now safe routes.

More ships are hit at Palembang, and CL Natori s confirmed sunk. Nice!!

I'll show a count soon. It's been a busy two weeks.

Hi Zecke. Worry about?

Lowpe is writing an AAR as well if you're interested in the Japanese side of things. We have a somewhat unique game going as he accidentally activated the Soviets and then decided, completely of his own volition, to play on with them active. I offered to go back a turn or act as if they did not activate as a House Rule, but he was curious and tenacious enough to try it out.

Lowpe is a great partner in this game, and we've played a hard fought, continuously crazy game for just over three months of game time. I've not had so much fun ever in this game. Every time I think I've done something good he comes back and beats me down, and likewise, I've gotten in some unusual licks for the Allies in 42.

Allied troops have overstacked hex 114, 41, and my hope is that supply will keep flowing to give us one chance at attacking here. The other possibility to consider is that some of the IJA units will leave before others can get out. That would increase odds for us and I'd attack even without complete supply if that is the case. The next few turns will be interesting.

Lowpe is writing an AAR as well if you're interested in the Japanese side of things. We have a somewhat unique game going as he accidentally activated the Soviets and then decided, completely of his own volition, to play on with them active. I offered to go back a turn or act as if they did not activate as a House Rule, but he was curious and tenacious enough to try it out.

Lowpe is a great partner in this game, and we've played a hard fought, continuously crazy game for just over three months of game time. I've not had so much fun ever in this game. Every time I think I've done something good he comes back and beats me down, and likewise, I've gotten in some unusual licks for the Allies in 42.

Zecke struggles a bit with English, but I have seen similar comments from him in other parts of the forum so I will hazard an answer. He is concerned that the Japanese player will quit early if the war goes too well for the Allies early on (like losing all of Japan's carriers, for example).
He does not know that Lowpe is one tenacious opponent and enjoys the challenge of playing the underdog.
Zecke, please correct me if I guessed wrong.

Looks like a good situation for continual rotation out of your units low on supply or high on disruption, bring them back as they are needed.

Status: offline 		My OCD-ness requires I ask about Command HQs. Do you have one prepping for Palembang? I would be moving all the American Command HQs into areas of offensive operations to be paired up with Corp/Army HQs.

Yes, well, there aren't many HQs present that are free to move right now. I can prep a few ABDA Dutch HQs for Palembang, but that's about it. This one might have to be sheer brute force and a lot of aerial and naval assistance. Troops on the ground don't like being bombarded continuously, and if he flies them in to supplement whatever was there they won't have much arty or as much support either. We'll see. Next turn I'll be able to bombard to check out what's in store.

I'm bringing four Aussie and one Indian brigade, an Indian Tank brigade and an Indian division to the party. About 1,000AV, but in swampland Palembang it'll be a tough mission no matter what.

It might be, but ...

A. I don't want to wear down these units any more than I have to since they'll be facing a counteroffensive over the summer once the Japanese have complete aerial supremacy.

B. I have no troops to rotate in!!

Everything else has been shifted to take advantage of the Hailar breakthrough toward Tsitsahar. True Soviet style. Punch a hole and fill it with everything you've got!!

Ok. With this report I will be up to date on turns!! It's taken a week but we made it. I'd really like to start asking for more feedback on a few things, since this is such a complex game and I know I've got only a short window of opportunity to achieve some big goals in these early months. I should get the turn back from Lowpe today. He had some contractors over yesterday and didn't get it back as quickly as usual.

The 20th began with a bang as S-35 applied the finishing touches to the destruction of CA Takao!!

She was one tough ship, and I'm sure Lowpe will miss her, but I certainly won't. It's hard to believe she didn't go down after the previous 3 fish in her gut, in addition to some decent battle damage from a clash with USN CAs. Regardless, this is the end, and I turned up the volume just to make sure I caught the sounds of her breaking up after these hits and a magazine explosion.

At Palembang the bombers of all types continue the barrage. A surprise element arrived as well, with the Tainan group supplying LR CAP over an IJN TF that arrived at Palembang. I wonder if they were after the supply TF that moved through and should just be arriving at Singers? Whatever the reason, our SBDs flew with decent escort and got through the CAP for diving sessions in both the morning and afternoon phases, but couldn't land a hit. Damn.

Lost about 5-7 SBDs, plus a number of escorts, but all of the Palembang bombing runs came in just fine and this also served as great intel on ships here. I can send out much stronger TFs tomorrow if I have a look around and think nothing else is on the way once I can see the turn file. I've got decent search going now and a lot of subs in the approaches.

At Palembang there were some more sunk confirmations, including another DD down, which is great. I'll tabulate the losses after these posts. I can't tell if we're completely closing the fields, but it's dicey for him to put any more panes here in case we do get a decent strike one day. I think over the course of the two phases we got about 20 hits on the airfields and a good number on the ports as well. Engineers were hit hard by the naval bombardments and should be both low in numbers and morale right now.

Four hits were recorded not eh Djambi oil as well, and tomorrow more planes will strike there to try and knock it out in 3-4 days. I need the brigade moving there to take it quickly and move back to Palembang.

Liberators struck at Pnotiniak, but couldn't hit anything in port, if in fact the Myoko is still there. There was a decent CAP up too, so I may have to wait on that ship. The oil is more important right now.

There was another ops report that another Japanese DD sank this past turn, but I can't find where it was hit. Maybe it was damaged previously and he tried to move it out of Palembang?

Nothing big happening in the Aleutians, just more battling to take out remaining Japanese units at Amchitka. No more contacts with the mini-KB, but it does appear to have moved forward and North according to reports from search planes. Cats claim to have hit two IJN CL up here during the turn, which would be nice.

Some good reporting up here! Hopefully some accurate bomb dropping by the search planes too!

The IJA continues to lose large numbers of troops up here in the Soviets regions with 147 devices destroyed and another 62 disabled in todays battles. Two regiments of the 20th division and one arty unit are crushed under the Soviet boot today and since I only used the forward tank units to attack, the main body and some arriving tank units pursued the retreating force. I'm curious to see if any of them went all of the way across the river and made a bridgehead in Tsitsahar. That would be very positive, and especially since the two big divisions are also among the 1,600 AV of pursuing units here.

I'm sure he wasn't counting on that, and it would be amazing to catch the shattered 14th and 20th divisions again plus any troops he had been reinforcing with possibly coming out of strat mode. I will be aggressive, but hopefully not stupid here. Getting this base would be a huge accomplishment and would also link the rail form Hailar and cut the rail to the other contested region on the Eastern flank of the Japanese position, trapping at least two divisions and change up there at Heiho.

Just looking back over the past half a month it looks like this is the list of destroyed and damaged ships. We've really started to reduce the number of Japanese DDs, which were already suffering, and I can already see a difference in TF composition. Lowpe does like small TFs set up for night battle, and love single and double ship DD TFs to wear out the Allied ships, expend their ammo, and get in a torpedo or two.

In the early stages this proved successful, but still resulted in a lot of IJN DDs being lost or damaged. He took out more Allied cruisers by a 2:1 factor compared to losses, but the DD numbers were always about equal. Now the ratio is turning to the Allies favour and we're starting get to some IJN cruisers as well.

In addition Lowpe had a huge number of transports sitting in Palembang, I guess waiting until things got quieter to move out and distribute fuel. Recent recon has had up to 75 ships listed in port. The most recent showed only 62 after a few days of bombing, and I would guess that number will be in the 30-40 range when I get the next turn. The multiple shell and bomb hits these xAK and other types have taken will likely keep the fires burning, and over time sink the ships in port. I don't know until we bombard how much naval support is here, but surely not enough to deal with all of these in flames at once.

I'll taper off using the 4Es here (sending them to work on oil at Djambi) and let the Dutch 2Es and smaller 1E bombers with 1,000lb bombs take over, the Vincents and Banshees. The 1,000 pounders are a good way to finish off any cripples here.

USAAF 2Es will continue to hit the fields making sure they don't get working again.
