No worries Mark VII. There's a hospital ship with a nurse with a unique raspy voice nearby, ready to take care of Wedge if anything happens.

Sub Searaven spots a transport task force south of the Solomons, probably northbound. No firing solution achieved. 2xAPs, AMC, CL Kuma, and 4 DDs.

My second big effort to sweep and bomb Koumac, and ships there, isn't much more successful than the first try. First 12 P40Es sweep, finding 55 Zeros. Many Warhawks are lost. I set this sweep at 7000 feet, hoping to draw the CAP down. I guess that part worked. They had to come down to shoot.

Then 8 LB-30s from Brisbane came to bomb the port. One port hit for the cost of 5 bombers. Then 8 B-17Ds arrive to bomb the airfield. No hits on the airfield, and 6 bombers are lost. This helps speed up the upgrade to the E model. (dry humor inserted)

Finally 25 P-400s sweep at 15000 feet, and do halfway decent against 31 Zeros. The divebombers with P-39 escorts did not fly.

Total losses are 21 Zeros for the cost of 11 P40Es, 7 P400s, 6 B17s and 5 LB30s.

In China, some limited success with my bombers. 8 B-17Es bomb Nanchang's airfield, doing minor damage and destroying a couple of Oscars and Sonias on the ground. 8 B-26s bombed the 15th Tank Regiment near Pingsiang, destroying 1 vehicle and disabling 15. H81s flew LRCAP, but there was no enemy CAP here today. Today the infantry caught up with the armor, so there will undoubtedly be CAP today.

The good news was with sub Thresher, the same sub that torpedoed (reportedly) carrier Soryu recently.

KB has moved up near the Solomons.

Many P40 squadrons have a 15 Mar 42 withdrawl date. These squadrons were all either in Australia or the South Pacific. This reduces my fighter numbers significantly. I will be able to upgrade and fill out some P40B squadrons, but they aren't all in the South Pacific.

British sub Trusty was refueling at Brisbane. For the first time ever, in any game, I spent a few political points to get a great sub captain, with high aggressiveness. In the past, I've done well with my subs, playing either side, without ever picking my captains. This is a test to see what this guy can do. The Brit torpedoes work, and Koumac remains the focal point.

Massive Explosion usually means fire levels of 20 or so plus some system and engineering damage. Add to that the torpedo flood damage and I say Japanese damage control is not going to have a good day! If no sinking sounds this turn they should be there tomorrow.

No sinking sounds today, or any sign of that AV.

The battle for Bandoeng, Java begins in earnest. This Dutch base is the last stand for the Dutch on Java, in a mountainous hex. The Dutch have plenty of supply here. When the enemy bombers come low, they take very high losses. They generally bomb from high altitude. Aurorus has brought in many artillery units, including lots of units from Manchuria. We knew they were coming from SigInt. His move is a smart one, judging from the casualties from his first bombardment. I thought that this fortress would hold out for a significant amount of time. Now I have my doubts.

Ground combat at Bandoeng (50,100)

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 28712 troops, 356 guns, 515 vehicles, Assault Value = 814

DMS sighted SW of Rangoon. The port has already been cleared of mines.

Bandoeng is heavily bombed and artillery attacked again today. The enemy artillery does far less damage today compared to yesterday. Medan's troops are bombed.

KB has disappeared. High detection levels are near Rabaul today. Probably there. Enemy troops approach Noumea. US cruiser TF is spotted 8 hexes SE of Noumea. I can hope that it looks like a carrier TF. They'll move a bit south today, but will remain in the area to go up against bombarding ships at Noumea, which are surely coming soon. It will be interesting to see if KB comes rushing back south with this sighting. I actually hope that it does.

With Rangoon easily conquered, Japanese troops are rushing north in Burma. Each base is garrisoned, but minimally, and every base in Burma will be easily conquered by the enemy. I will draw the line in the jungle near the Indian border.

In China, the contested hex southwest of Changsha is getting more crowded with enemy units. The Chinese corp there won't last long, maybe not even a day. Not against multiple tank regiments and multiple infantry divisions. China could get very ugly soon. Reinforcements are moving into position behind this hex, but it will be a single line of defense. There's nothing behind that.

A word of warning about trying to defend Pingsiang. Units in a base can only draw supplies from that base (as opposed to units in non base hexes that can draw supplies from anywhere).

If you intend to make it part of your defensive line you will need to keep it topped up with supplies. If the base runs out then your units will too, even though you may have stockpiles elsewhere. You don't want to pull too much there as it is a dot and can only store 5000 before spoilage becomes a problem. You could really do with getting the airfield up a couple of points to make supply management easier.

Of course, this is only an issue if you intend to fight there. As the Chinese I do everything I can to avoid fighting in my own base hexes as they often result in 'local supply shortage, weak spots'.

Good point on supply Yakface. I'll keep an eye on it. I do intend to fight at Pingsiang. Forcing the enemy to go around, through jungle terrain, delays things a bit more.

Sub S-38 fires 4 torpedoes at CL Yura near Port Moresby. Torpedoes miss. This is a big transport convoy. 4 xAPs, 2 AKs, 2 DMS, 2 CLs, and 4 DDs. The convoy just passed Horn Island. Another big convoy into the South Pacific. Could be carrying at least a division.

Dutch sub KIX sights an AO near Rabaul. No engagement.

Rennell Island in the Solomons is invaded by the enemy. No Catalinas here, but the number of places that I could be hiding them is dwindling.

No sign of KB today. Enemy troops at La Foa haven't made it to Noumea yet, but they are due any day. A second big stack is spotted in China, moving a bit south of the first big stack. I'll try to bomb this stack today, in clear terrain.

Near Koumac, Salmon fires 2 torpedoes at patrol boat Heiei Maru #7. One hits but is a dud. 4 PBs are escorting an AMC here, either inbound to or outbound from Koumac.

Near Buka in the Solomons, Dutch sub KIX spots a task force with 2 AKs and an AMC. Maybe the big task force seen near Port Moresby.

Just south of Rabaul, KIX then fires 2 torpedoes at DD Yugumo. Yugomo is escorting BB Hiei with other destroyers. First sighting of a battleship in the Solomons, I think. Could be that the big boys are on the way to work Noumea over.

In Burma, Zeros swept Mandalay. No CAP. Lots of bombers hit a base force unit there.

In China, some B-17s and B-26s hit the 6th Division, the 102nd Infantry Regiment and the 19th Ind. Mixed Brigade at Kanhsien. Minor damage to the troops. Significant forces to the south of the bigger armor-equipped stack.

Bandoeng on Java gets the daily artillery attack. Assume this every day from now on if I don't mention it.

Bombay went to a level 7 airfield, enabling air units to upgrade. A squadron of AVG is there waiting for this. It upgrades to P40Es. A couple of Buffalo squadrons start to move to Bombay for upgrades.

No sign of KB, but the spotting of BB Hiei in the Solomons is notable. KB is probably nearby.

Brit sub Truant hit big tanker San Diego Maru near Koumac. The tanker was loaded with fuel and burning badly. Sinking audio just after this, so it is gone.

Dutch sub KXVII then torpedoed a patrol boat in the same area. Audio says it sank.

In Burma, Oscars swept Mandalay, finding nothing. Sallys hit a base force at Mandalay. Sallys with Oscars hit Shwebo, doing a lot of damage to a ground unit there. Zeros then swept Shwebo, and I think they came from a carrier task force near Pegu. CVE spotted. The enemy's 1st Raiding Regiment then dropped on Shwebo, destroying the Burma battalion that was there. This cuts the rail line to the south. Normally, this would be a very bad thing, but the drop was too late to isolate units that I'd already railed to the north. I still have weak units in the bases south, but they were and are going to stay and wait to be kicked around.

Tomorrow I will spend some time planning the defensive line on the Indian border. Two disturbing things learned today: there are already 24 enemy units in Rangoon. These certainly aren't necessary for just Burma. And Koumac now has 94 enemy fighters based there. Not looking good for Noumea.

Sub S-18 spots CS Mizuho and destroyers on the coast south of Pegu. There are CVEs here. The sub doesn't get a shot. Other subs are vectored to this hex, as this task force has been parked here.

36 Oscars sweep Mandalay again. No Allied aircraft here.

Oscars and Zeros in China sweep Hengyang. Part of AVG was here, flying CAP for a couple of days, along with a 2 plane recon unit. But AVG left yesterday, heading back to India. Sallys then bomb the airfield to medium effect.

Troops at Prome are bombed heavily, with almost 300 casualties. Clear terrain. Prome is then captured by the enemy 18th Division. Burma is becoming a complete rout, but that is according to plan. I'll defend the Indian border, not Burma, other than speed bumps at the bases.

See map for the South Pacific developments. I expect the enemy to do an artillery attack at Noumea today, as recon. So I'm guessing that there won't be a naval bombardment until the next day. But mines have to be laid on their predicted route tonight, so that will occur. A big drop of mines was made by that super fast Dutch minelayer (I really need to look up the name of that ship. It's very nice) Maybe KB can come through that hex.

Allied cruisers and destroyers loiter to the south of Noumea, waiting to run into Noumea when I guess that a bombardment force will show up.

S-18 again spots the CVE task force, now moving away from Pegu near Moulmein, but doesn't get a shot.

Near Rennell Island, sub Tambor fires 4 torpedoes at DMS W-9. It is part of a huge transport task force, spotted earlier. Lots of xAPs, some true AKs, 2 CLs and 4 DDs. Headed toward Koumac.

Brit sub Trusty fires 2 torpedoes at xAK Eihuku Maru NW of Koumac, but misses. Also spotted an AMC and another xAK. Probably also going to Koumac, but I can't rule out a landing directly at La Foa, next to Noumea. High detection levels are now in 2 areas: west of Koumac, and northwest of Koumac.

Many enemy bombers and fighters do their work over a lone Chinese corp near Pingsiang. This is the location of the big enemy stack. An attack follows:

Ground combat at 81,55 (near Pingsiang)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 30937 troops, 315 guns, 295 vehicles, Assault Value = 1022

Defending force 9074 troops, 38 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 308

Japanese adjusted assault: 933

Allied adjusted defense: 327

Japanese assault odds: 2 to 1

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), leaders(+), experience(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
542 casualties reported
Squads: 1 destroyed, 61 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 5 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 6 disabled

Allied ground losses:
696 casualties reported
Squads: 8 destroyed, 98 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 15 disabled
Engineers: 1 destroyed, 8 disabled

Assaulting units:
3rd Division
12th Tank Regiment
15th Tank Regiment
39th Division
8th Armored Car Co
13th Tank Regiment
5th Armored Car Co
14th Medium Field Artillery Regiment
13th Army
15th Ind.Medium Field Artillery Regiment
11th Field Artillery Regiment

Defending units:
86th Chinese Corps

The Chinese Corp does hold, but won't hold for long. There is enemy movement out of this hex now, but probably just a unit that took some losses today.

Toungoo is lost in Burma.

With high detection levels west of Koumac, the Allied cruisers south of Koumac will move a bit to the east, for safety. There was no artillery attack at Noumea yet, so the big enemy attack is coming, yet. There could be an additional landing of troops at La Foa very soon, and/or more troops coming south from Koumac.

Today I moved 3 decent fighter squadrons to Noumea. The enemy got good recon of Noumea yesterday, and there haven't been fighters there, so maybe I can surprise some enemy activity there today. A new batch of PT boats will arrive at Noumea, coming from Suva.

Sub Trout spots 3 DMS and 4 DDs north of Koumac, but doesn't get a shot.

Near Pearl Harbor, I-6 spots battleship Mississippi and gets a torpedo hit on her. Damage isn't too bad: SYS 8/FLOT 13-11/ENG 15-10/FIRE 0. It will repair some at Pearl Harbor and probably go to the West Coast to repair the rest. Those slow battleships are definitely torpedo magnets.

I-6 then spots a transport TF in the same hex with Mississippi, but doesn't get a shot off. I-6 takes one good depth charge hit.

26 Zeros and 77 Oscars sweep Changsha in China. A squadron of Warhawks are defending, and do a decent job considering the overwhelming numbers. 10 P40Es are lost, while 7 Zeros are downed. It's not a new idea to fight with overwhelming numbers. Sometimes, when you are on short end of numbers, it's better not to fight at all, or at least pick your spots. The squadron will return to India for now.

15 Sallys then bombed Changsha's airfield, doing very minor damage in bad weather.

35 Oscars sweep Taung Gyi, Burma, but find no CAP. 21 Sallys escorted by another 30 Oscars bomb the troops here, hitting nothing in bad weather.

42 Oscars sweep Magwe, finding no defenders. 50 Sallys hit ground troops here, doing very minor damage in bad weather.

8 LB-30s bomb Japanese troops at Noumea, hitting the 56th Recon Regiment. Minor damage caused. No LRCAP. It'll show up eventually, maybe after La Foa is built. I will know when it's there as I've been flying supply into Noumea from Norfolk Island every day, with 4 or 5 transport planes.

See the map for developments in the South Pacific.

Near Koumac, sub Trout spots CA Haguro and 3 DDs, but doesn't get a shot.

Near Balep Island, north of Koumac, sub Seal fires 4 torpedoes at DD Akikaze but misses. An AMC and 2 AKs are spotted. Could be carrying the 16th Division listed on SigInt recently.

Just east of Noumea, RO-66 spots the Allied cruiser TF speeding to Noumea. 2 torpedoes miss DD Benham. At Noumea, a naval battle takes place, in the rain, with maximum visibility at 1,000 yards. The fight started at that range, and ended at just 4,000 yards, resulting in a rather short and indecisive fight.

Task forces break off...

The hero of the fight was light cruiser Leander, who launched the 2 torpedoes that hit the Japanese light cruiser. I had debated whether to include non-US ships in this task force, and decided to do so due to the lack of ships. Leander was the key in this short fight.

Cruiser Indianapolis was badly damaged, with SYS 5/FLOT 57-41/ENG 1-1/FIRE 0. Destroyer Ellet has SYS 26/FLOT 18-10/ENG 2-0/FIRE 0.

The Allied ships were not spotted during the day as they retired. The enemy TF retired to Koumac, not hitting any mines at Noumea or the ones off the east coast. A PT boat did hit an enemy mine at Noumea and sank. Interesting that this type 88 minefield was there and Aurorus still moved ships in. It could be that the mines were dropped simultaneously today.

More enemy fighter sweeps and bombing in Burma, China, and Sumatra. Hengyang in China is becoming not operational for aircraft. Cairns was bombed for the first time, by Bettys from Port Moresby, escorted by Zeros. No damage to the airfield. Ichang in China is bombed for the first time. A recon bombing no doubt, as it targeted ground troops. There's just one Chinese corp there. The defensive line is behind Ichang, in better terrain.

It's been awhile since Malaybalay on Mindanao was attacked deliberately. It gets an artillery attack every day. The previous two or three deliberate attacks went very badly for the Japanese. Today was no exception. Still plenty of supply here in the mountain holdout.

Ground combat at Malaybalay (80,90)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 8622 troops, 68 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 263

Sub Trout fires 4 torpedoes at DD Oshio near Koumac, but misses.

Near Kirakira, sub Searaven fires 2 torpedoes at xAK Kusuyama Maru. One hits, but is a dud. Kirakira is then amphibiously invaded. An AVP has been hiding here, supporting Catalinas flying search missions in the Solomons. Time to leave. The AVP will try to make a run to another hideaway.

Noumea is bombarded by heavy cruisers Ashigara, Nachi, Haguro, and Myoko. PT-28 is sunk in port. 208 casualties, and minor damage to the port and airfield. On the way home, CA Haguro is torpedoed once by Dutch sub O21.

AM Whyalla gets a good depth charge hit on I-173, near Newcastle, Australia.

Sub S-34 fires 2 torpedoes at xAK Tokai Maru, near Moulmein, but misses.

Wake Island has been mostly forgotten so far. The enemy has never even did recon on the base. I snuck an xAK there with supply long ago. It was there unloading when the last xAKL from the Philippines escaped to Wake, and helped the xAKL back to Pearl Harbor, providing some fuel. But I haven't reinforced Wake, thinking that it was just a matter of time till Aurorus got around to taking it. It hadn't happened. So I made plans to sneak in some troops and maybe surprise him with a tougher defense. Well, today Wake was invaded, and he beat my reinforcements by a classified number of days.

Battleships Mutsu and Nagato, with 4 destroyers bombarded Wake first, causing minimal casualties, and minimal base damage, but highly disrupting the troops, and eliminating some supply. The invasion then began, and the Marines did their best.

45 Zeros sweep Noumea. No CAP.
42 Oscars sweep Taung Gyi, Burma. No CAP. Bombers follow.
33 Oscars sweep a hex near Pingsiang, China. No CAP. Bombers follow.

South of Pingsiang, the enemy crushes a Chinese corp in rough terrain. A line has been formed behind this hex, knowing that this was coming.

Near Toungoo, Burma, a Burma battalion is defeated and destroyed.

At Wake, the Marines held, but barely. I don't know how many troops are in the 3 enemy units, and if there could be any overstacking issues for them. I do know that today's fight destroyed all of Wake's supply, and most of the supply in the units themselves. I decided to pull out fragments of the 2 units by Catalinas, figuring that I can rebuild them faster at Pearl Harbor than waiting for them to be regenerated. On the chance that the enemy doesn't attack again today, Cats are also flying in some supply. The unit that I hoped to reinforce Wake with is only barely prepped for Wake, so a counter invasion is not possible.

At Noumea, I moved in a fighter squadron and 2 bomber units, with their naval strike range limited to 1, hoping to hit anything that stays at Noumea. They could have LRCAP from Koumac, but at range 3, its effectiveness should be limited. With KB seemingly moving away to the north, I will be using every cruiser and destroyer that I have in the area to defend Noumea. Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of them. It looks like there are enough combat ships at Koumac that there could be a steady flow of bombarding ships from now on. I'm hoping that the mines, the subs, and the airstrikes can have some effect.

Invasion Aborted

Since December 8, I've had 4 infantry regiments prepping for the 4 big airfields in the Marshalls, all in the north. I had no idea if I would get a chance to do these invasions early on, but I'd get ready. With all of the enemy activity in the South Pacific, and little activity noted in the Marshalls, when my carriers retired to Pearl Harbor to repair Yorktown, I decided to pull the trigger when the time was right. Each invasion would consist of an infantry regiment and a combat engineer unit. Each target is a very small island with a 6,000 man limit. All units were fully prepped, but the infantry were very inexperienced, starting at 40. When they loaded on ships, they were between 45 and 50, so not great.

6 carriers were involved, with a Brit carrier having made the trip from Diego Garcia to Australia to Pearl Harbor. 10 US slow battleships were going to be used, some in bombardment TFs, others with invasion TFs. Task forces included minesweepers, minelayers, ASW, replenishment, supply, ships with a few air units to unload, support ships. Pretty much some of everything. Over 30 TFs.

As the armada left Pearl Harbor within the last week, it ran over an enemy sub, which torpedoed BB Mississippi and got a good look at multiple TFs that looked very much like invasion TFs, with a slow BB embedded with multiple APs. It just looked like a big invasion armada was on the way to somewhere, and it was spotted between Pearl Harbor and Johnston Island.

But what would Aurorus think of this? I couldn't be sure, and still don't know for sure, but it was a lot more than a convoy to Johnston Island, and the only other thing out in that direction is the Marshalls. They'd already gone too far west to be a typical convoy leaving Pearl Harbor for the South Pacific.

My gut feeling is that it looked like the southern Marshalls would be the target, since the Tarawa area has a lack of big Japanese airfields. It's the logical place to go first. Regardless, if I'm going northern and he's thinking southern, that doesn't work for me.

Initially, KB was heading south while west of New Caledonia. When KB continued south to near Norfolk Island, things were looking very good for an invasion. It would take at least a week, and require refueling, for KB to go from Norfolk Island to the northern Marshalls.

Then I was spotted, and since then KB proceeded north for 3 days in a row, looking like it was going to Tulagi, and today turned NE toward Ndeni. Which is also in the direction of the Marshalls.

I may be completely wrong about where KB is going. It could be just joining up with another TF going to Koumac, or a new South Pacific invasion. But I can't risk everything in the Marshalls with KB seemingly on the way. I wasn't going to win the race, and it would take days to approach, invade, conquer, pull off combat troops, and land support troops.

So unfortunately, after many hours of planning, and over a month of game time and real time setting all of this up, I had to cancel. The infantry regiment that was to go to Wake is going to Johnston Island, to beef up the defense there, and prevent another Wake. April is a big naval upgrade month. I haven't decided whether to upgrade carriers now or wait. Cruisers, destroyers, and subs are due also.

Sub S-23 torpedoes tiny YO J-3847 near Mergui, Burma. The TF also has an AS and 2 ACMs, and is undoubtedly moving to Rangoon. The sub gets hit by a depth charge and is returning to base.

Cruisers Kako, Furutaka, Kinugasa, and Aoba bombard Noumea. I'd taken a chance and moved air units into Noumea. The number and type of aircraft destroyed is accurate, just 2 planes. PT boats at Noumea basically ran away to the south.

Night Naval bombardment of Noumea at 115,160 - Coastal Guns Fire Back!

Allied aircraft
no flights

Allied aircraft losses
Hudson III (LR): 3 damaged
P-400 Airacobra: 8 damaged
SB2U-3 Vindicator: 11 damaged
SB2U-3 Vindicator: 1 destroyed on ground
PBY-5 Catalina: 1 damaged
PBY-5 Catalina: 1 destroyed on ground

20 Coastal gun shots fired in defense.

Japanese Ships
CA Kako
CA Furutaka
CA Kinugasa, Shell hits 1
CA Aoba

Allied ground losses:
331 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 6 disabled
Non Combat: 5 destroyed, 42 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 9 (1 destroyed, 8 disabled)
Vehicles lost 7 (4 destroyed, 3 disabled)

Resources hits 1
Airbase hits 5
Airbase supply hits 4
Runway hits 20
Port hits 9
Port supply hits 3

Near Rennell Island, one of the KB TFs is spotted. Dutch sub KXVIII fires 2 torpedoes at DD Yugumo and misses.

Near Koumac, Dutch sub O16 fires 4 torpedoes at DD Yukikaze and misses.

Zeros and Oscars sweep Changsha, Oscars sweep Taung Gyi in Burma. In an unusual attack, 67 Zeros fly to Noumea from Koumac, with about half sweeping at 11000 feet and half bombing from 21000 feet. 8 P400s are downed with 4 Zeros destroyed. Bettys then bomb the airfield, doing minor damage.

The enemy continues to land at Wake, and the Marines get a couple more shell hits on an xAP, before the base is attacked and overwhelmed. An infantry regiment and supply would have been enough to hold. The enemy beat me to Wake by 4 days. Not that I didn't have time to do this earlier. I've had over 3 months. But I didn't think it worth the risk until I could tag along with the Marshalls invasion shipping.

KB is now near Ndeni.

A shame about that invasion being thwarted, but it can be mounted again when KB inevitably has to return home for repairs and upgrades.

My next big decision is whether to commit the fleet to the South Pacific immediately, and try to save Noumea, or start a bunch of ship upgrades. I will probably leave the slow battleships at Pearl Harbor. I think they are the best insurance against a surprise raid by KB on Pearl Harbor. I've done a few 1942 or 1943 Pearl Harbor raids as the Japanese, and hitting a bunch of battleships instead of the hundreds of other ships there is a bad result for the Japanese. Sure, some battleship damage is good, but the cost to get through heavy CAP and not getting any carriers or lots and lots of other ships makes it a bad result, in my opinion. The battleships just soak up so many bombs.

Which is another reason why KB still has the advantage. It has battleships escorting it. I don't have decent torpedo bombers until I get the TBFs. Not ready to go toe-to-toe with KB just yet.

I need to drag out the Noumea defense as long as possible. If it is going to be lost, make it as long and painful as I can. If KB gets distracted into the Marshalls, it may become possible to sneak in troops with many APDs that I have in the area now. But it could be just adding more troops in to be lost. If the enemy continues to bombard Noumea nightly, there's no chance to sneak in troops. I'll continue to bleed the IJN with combat ships arriving at Noumea at night, and adding mines if possible.

The April upgrade list includes 3 US carriers, 1 British carrier, 4 US heavy cruisers, 10 US light cruisers, 40 US destroyers, 13 US DMS, and most (if not all) of the US subs. Lots of AMs and AVDs too.

Some minor notes:
I sent a PBY squadron from Australia to the Philippines. The pilots are trained in torpedo attack. Once in a long while, Catalinas spot something in the South China Sea. It would be nice to get something with those torpedo equipped Cats.

Some units have started moving from positions in India towards the Burma border. I won't form a line until I see where the enemy is pushing, whether they move inland or along the coast.

Noumea gets its nightly bombardment. Cruisers Aoba, Kinugasa, Furutaka, and Kako, with 4 destroyers comes in and fights 5 PT boats in 3 separate battles. The PTs do fire a couple of torpedoes, but miss. 3 PT boats are lost. Noumea is bombarded, with 221 casualties and minimal damage to the base.

The usual sweeps and bombing in Burma and China. Aurorus is looking for a place to breakthrough in southern China, and is doing lots of recon of the Chinese front. Changsha's airfield is bombed.

Sub KXIII fires 2 torpedoes at patrol boat Sinko Maru, missing. This is the support TF headed to Rangoon, with an AS, ACM, and others.

Sibolga on Sumatra is lost to the enemy.

KB really is headed to the Marshalls.

US and Allied cruiser TFs are positioning for another run into Noumea. I will coordinate the next attack, with all ships arriving at night at Noumea. Need to attrit the enemy bombardment forces.

SigInt says that the Imperial Guard Division is at Singapore. It will be interesting to see where it heads.

O16 fires 4 torpedoes at DD Asagumo near Koumac but misses.
Haddock fires 2 torpedoes at xAK Kinugasa Maru near Kwajalein but misses.
O21 fires 4 torpedoes at DD Oshio near Noumea but misses.
Trout spots the same TF, but no engagement.

The same old enemy cruisers bombard Noumea. 360 casualties and a PT boat sunk in port. Moderate airfield damage.

24 Zeros sweep Changsha. Lots of bombers hit the airfield. 31 Oscars sweep.
42 Oscars sweep Meiktila, Burma. Sallys bomb troops.
42 Oscars sweep Magwe, Burma. Sallys bomb troops (just a base unit here)
Sallys and Sonias bomb Medan, Sumatra.
Sallys and Lilys bomb Bandoeng, Java.
Lilys bomb troops near Sibolga, Sumatra.
Sallys bomb troops at Taung Gyi, Burma.

Meiktila, Burma is lost to the enemy.

A small New Guinea unit is kicked out of Kokoda. The enemy 5th Indpt SNLF Coy wasn't able to do this months ago, but the 84th Naval Guard just reinforced and took the base easily.

No sign of KB today. Last seen NE of Ndeni headed N or NE.

Sub Gudgeon fires 2 torpedoes at PB Kinsyo Maru #4 near Koumac but misses.

Light cruiser Dragon and a destroyer tries to bombard La Foa but doesn't hit anything. Not having a recon plane didn't help.

Similar sweeps and bombings as yesterday.

Medan is lost, as is Terapo on New Guinea, and Taung Gyi in Burma.

Allied carriers return to Pearl Harbor, with lots of invasion shipping also returning or about to. KB is spotted just west of Tarawa. Aurorus will have to wonder where all of that invasion shipping went.

My cruiser move into Noumea failed, as the enemy didn't show up. Seeing the Dutch ships south of Noumea must have spooked them. There may be a battleship group at Koumac now. Don't want to run into battleships at Noumea. The fast Dutch minelayer successfully dropped a load of mines at Noumea. Maybe a battleship can find those.

Interesting SigInt for today:

It's almost April 1942. KB is at Tarawa. Most of the US fleet is at or near Pearl Harbor. 3 US carriers are due for a 7 day upgrade. CV Indomitable has a 15 day upgrade. Some CAs and lots of CLs have upgrades up to 27 days long. And many DDs have upgrades from 14 to 18 days long.

The question is, do I risk upgrading at Pearl Harbor, with KB just a week's movement away?

Pearl Harbor is incredibly well defended. Lots of fighters and bombers. Not to mention that any upgraded carriers have their squadrons moved to land bases. 10 US battleships will be at Pearl, available to soak up bombs. I really don't think Aurorus would come here with a raid. But he is smart. He knows when my ships are due upgrade, and he knows that my strengths are in logistics and being efficient with things like upgrades. It would be tempting to go to Pearl. I don't think he will, but I have to consider the chances.

I want to upgrade, but don't want to have to move everything to the West Coast and lose a couple of weeks use of the ships. After the upgrade, I want to head back to the South Pacific.

What to do...

[edit: Part of my concern is that he sent KB to Tarawa to stop a possible invasion, and now that KB is there, he may want to find something to do with it. Maybe raid to the SE, maybe raid Pearl Harbor, maybe invade Midway or Johnston, who knows.]

Just move your carrier air groups onto PH and Lahaina airfields and load up the other islands with aircraft too. If KB comes he might get a few hits on ships in port but he will lose most of his best pilots and aircraft.

Noumea is bombarded by the same cruisers. The support units there are taking a pounding. The combat troops are barely touched. 384 casualties, and troops are being destroyed. The airbase is basically out of action. Allied TFs are moving into position for another attempted intercept. They've taken on fuel and are mostly rearmed.

Medan is heavily bombed and lost to the enemy. There were still Allied mines there from the very fast Dutch minelayer who's now working in the South Pacific. The enemy never brought ships here, landing to the south instead.

Magwe is lost.

B-26s in northern China bomb the 9th Armored Car Co north of Yenan. The enemy is flanking my line here, but I have a small Chinese unit on the way.

KB disappeared today. It was adjacent to Tarawa.
The Southern Army HQ, which was at Bangkok, is now at Moulmein.

Here's the morale boost for today:

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Samah at 73,66

Weather in hex: Partial cloud

Raid spotted at 9 NM, estimated altitude 1,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 5 minutes

Allied aircraft
PBY-5 Catalina x 12

Allied aircraft losses
PBY-5 Catalina: 1 damaged

Japanese Ships
TK Nisshin Maru
SC Ch 26
TK Tonan Maru #3, Torpedo hits 4, heavy fires, heavy damage

Aircraft Attacking:
12 x PBY-5 Catalina launching torpedoes at 200 feet
Naval Attack: 2 x 22.4in Mk 13 Torp

There was also a dud hit. Sinking audio heard. The Cats go back to Australia. This surprise attack won't happen again. Aurorus will give the Philippines a wider berth with his shipping, and maybe even do some bombing of Luzon in retaliation.

That is one of Japan's biggest tankers - something like 28 VP IIRC. That will hurt his fuel hauling plans! Nice to see the Cats get their shot too!

I'm considering starting to extract troops from Noumea by air instead of flying in supply. If I'm not committing the carriers to the region immediately, and the enemy continues to reinforce Koumac for a push on Noumea, it might be better to save some of the troops, particularly support troops like airbase support. The airfield is borderline operational right now, but is getting worse with each bombardment.

I wouldn't be able to extract enough troops to make the base fall much sooner, and the extraction may not even be noticed by the enemy. But it would help keep some units in the area, even if just as fragments.

I still hope to delay at Noumea as long as possible, and continue to commit the few cruisers and destroyers in the area.

Sub Trout spots the regular Noumea bombardment group leaving Koumac, and gets a torpedo hit on heavy cruiser Myoko. The replay shows Myoko smoking later in the turn, but the ship isn't too badly damaged, as it continued to Noumea to bombard.

PT-22, the only PT boat left at Noumea, and lacking torpedoes, engages the enemy at Noumea in 3 fights. No shells landed for anyone. Noumea is bombarded. Moderate damage.

Denpassar, near Java, is invaded. There are still Dutch troops here.

I will list all of the enemy air activity today, to highlight just how many fighters and bombers are being used.

27 Zeros sweep Changsha.
42 Oscars sweep Mandalay.
34 Oscars sweep Changsha.
29 Nells bomb troops at Sibolga.
42 Oscars sweep a hex near Magwe.
21 Sallys, 3 Sonias, and 6 Lilys bomb Changsha. 12 Oscar escorts.
25 Sallys and 29 Oscar escorts hit troops near Taung Gyi.
19 Sonias and 23 Lilys hit troops near Medan.
3 Lilys and 45 Sonias hit troops near Hengyang. 30 Nates escort.
15 Lilys and 10 Sonias hit troops near Changsha.
49 Sallys hit troops near Mandalay.
27 Sallys and 31 Oscars escorts hit troops near Magwe.
27 Lilys hit troops near Medan.
9 Sonias and 12 Nate escorts hit troops near Changsha.
9 Lilys and 12 Nate escorts hit troops near Hengyang.
9 Marys hit troops near Melak.
9 Sonias hit troops near Hengyang.
29 Sallys and 27 Lilys hit Bandoeng.

Mandalay in Burma is lost to the enemy.

Preliminary combat at Denpassar shows that the enemy hasn't brought enough troops.

No sign of KB for 2 days now, since it was seen near Tarawa.

Tonight Allied combat ships will run into Noumea again. They weren't spotted today, so I'm hoping that the enemy shows up. Fragments of Allied troops at Noumea are starting to be flown out by Catalina. This isn't a full-blown evacuation. Not yet, anyhow. Mainly getting the airbase support out. With the airfield too damaged to use, I might as well.

I just recently got SigInt about an enemy regiment planning for Townsville. Today I got that the 4th Infantry Regiment is planning for Cairns. Just regiments so far, and could be misinformation, but I have to consider it possible. With New Caledonia contested and possibly to be lost, I'm looking out for a smaller invasion in NE Australia, to draw me north, and a bigger invasion mid-coast, to cut off the north. But that's all speculation at this point.

I'm surprised to see a mineclearing ship at Wake Island already. Aurorus is really focused on the mine threat. I guess that I've done enough to warrant that.

A lot of the same bombing as yesterday. I moved an AVG squadron back to Changsha to mix things up a bit.

The rest of the enemy Yokosuka 2nd SNLF has landed at Denspassar, and it looks like it may be enough now to defeat the Dutch defenders.

I got 2 messages of heavy activity at Kusaie Island, which is interesting, as it is near the Marshalls. I wonder what that is about, as it doesn't appear to be KB related.

Today is the last day of the "amphibious bonus". That is something to celebrate. Tomorrow is a big Allied ship upgrade day, and a lot of ships are scheduled to begin their refits. With KB now apparently back in the Ndeni area, my fear of a Pearl Harbor strike has gone away. Many ships start upgrades there tomorrow.

My goal is to be more open to a carrier battle in one month, after carrier, cruiser, and destroyer upgrades.

Are those regiments from the same division or divided from 2 separate divisions? It is common to divide your division to take on reinforcements quicker. Also are those division/s restricted? If restricted it may be a little OPSEC misdirection.
