Full story on the USN's MQ-25 UAV here: The Drive

But an interesting part for scenario designers:

quote:

Per U.S. Navy documents the author previously obtained via FOIA, the full MQ-25 “system” will include four drones, a control station linked to the carrier’s existing networks, and modifications to the ships to accommodate the Stingrays and their specific equipment. The initial contract appears to cover one single package. A full fleet of 72 aircraft would cover 18 total systems, which would allow the service to assign one to each of its nine carrier air wings, while holding additional packages in reserve in case of a maintenance issue, the need to deploy additional groups during a crisis, and for training and testing purposes.

Four airframes per CVW, of which only one or two are likely to be available at any given time.

Higher ground is not just a figurative meaning of decisive advantage, but also a testament to information gathering. When satellite imaging gets smarter, it will automatically find military encampments and missile sites rapidly:

A German shipbuilding company has won the $3.5 billion contract to design and build Australia's next fleet of 12 Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs), with construction to be shared between shipyards in Western Australia and South Australia. The first two Luerssen-designed ships will be built in Adelaide by the Government-owned ASC Shipbuilding from the end of next year. The remaining 10 OPVs will be built at the Austal shipyard at Henderson, south of Perth.

Embarassing. At least the engines did not break down this time ...

I don't think the article is correct when it says that five of the six destroyers are undergoing maintenance. I think HMS Duncan is operational at the moment. HMS Dragon has just returned to Portsmouth after taking part in QEII's successful sea trials. She is seaworthy. Moreover, HMS Defender is completing a major refit and will be returning to the fleet.

Despite of the skepticism, TheDrive took the substantially big interest in China’s Ghost Imaging sensor experiments, and quoted it with several references into one big article:

Swedish-Finnish Naval Task Group (SFNTG) Reaches Initial Operational Capability

quote:

Vice Admiral Veijo Taipalus, Commander of the Finnish Navy, and Rear Admiral Jens Nykvist, Chief of Swedish Navy, agreed on an intensified cooperation between the Finnish and Swedish navies in Helsinki on December 1st.

The Swedish-Finnish Naval Task Group (SFNTG) has reached initial operational capability (IOC). It means that the SFNTG is now able to conduct naval operations.

The emphasis is a common recognized maritime picture through sea surveillance operations with an ability to protect maritime traffic.

Video: U.S. Navy Second Zumwalt-Class Destroyer Michael Monsoor Started Sea Trials

The second Zumwalt-class destroyer, the future USS Michael Monsoor (DDG 1001) sailed out of General Dynamics-Bath Iron Works (GD BIW) shipyard in Bath, Maine, yesteday for its very first sea trials (called builder trials). The Zumwalt-class is the largest class of destroyers ever built for the U.S Navy. This initial builder sea trials will help check basic systems onboard.

Japan Considering JSM & LRASM Next Gen Anti-Ship Missile Procurement

quote:

According to a report by Fuji News Network (FNN)'s "Fuji TV" which aired today, the Japan Self-Defense Forces (自衛隊 Jieitai or JSDF) is considering the procurement of JASSM-ER (Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile - Extended Range) long-range air-to-ground, precision standoff missiles as well as Joint Strike Missile (JSM) and LRASM (Long Range Anti Ship Missile) next generation anti-ship missiles.

While the procurement of Kongsberg's JSM was previously mentionned in the Japanese press (Yomiuri newspaper first mentionned it in June this year), it is the first time that LRASM is mentionned. LRASM just entered mass production this summer and it is unlikely to be available for export any time soon. The missiles would be intended to be fitted on the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) F-15J and F-2 fighters. Japan is set to mass produce its own next gen anti-ship missile, the XASM-3, next year. But XASM-3 has a shorter range compared to JSM and LRASM and lacks land attack capability.

Kh-31 air-to-surface missile added to Russian Navy MiG-29K/KUB weapons package

quote:

Kh-31 missiles have been added to the set of armaments of Russian seaborne MiG-29K/KUB fighter jets. Various missile modifications can hit adversary warships and radars. Supersonic speed makes Kh-31 nearly invulnerable for air defense. One salvo by a wing of fighter jets can destroy or make inoperative a major warship, the Izvestia daily writes.

The Russian Navy headquarters told the newspaper that Kh-31 adaptation for MiG-29K (one-seater) and MiG-29KUB (two-seater) had been completed. In autumn the missiles were added to the set of arms of the seaborne fighter jet. Pilots have successfully fulfilled the program of combat training launches.

Russian TV Report Highlights Project 855M Yasen-M class Submarine Kazan Design Improvements

quote:

The Severodvinsk nuclear-powered cruise missile submarine (SSGN) of project 885 became operational in the Russian Navy three years ago. Armed with Onix and Kalibr missiles it operates in the Northern fleet. In foreseeable future a project 885M boat of Yasen-M class is to become operational in the Navy. It will be built by an upgraded project and enjoy unique characteristics, including decreased noisiness. The submarine named Kazan is the first one in the series which will comprise the backbone of the Russian underwater forces, the Zvezda broadcaster reported.

Watched a new documentary about the Yasen-M "Kazan" submarine that was recently shown at Zvezda channel. There is very interesting scene about the lattest torpedoes that are being produced for 4th gen subs:
Watch from 29:36
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqjgEzDav9Q
Torpedo is not named in the movie. Factory official has commented that the max depth is 1000m and max distance is 100km, however it is not said at what speed such distance can be reached.
The torpedo looks very similar to the pictures of "Fizik-2"/"Futlyar" topredo which were associated with the news about that torpedo in 2016:

However it can turn out that those pictures were not related to the new torpedo. Journalists time to time post pictures not related to the article.
Latter in the video "Fizik-1" and new mine-torpedo system are shown.
