Hey guys, its been a while.

So, after following Canoerebel and John IIIs excellent AARs Ive gotten the urge back to return to this game. Reinstalled it yesterday, and looking through things, it seems much has changed and much is the same.

Ive started an AI game as allies against Don Bowens dreadful superman-ironman Japanese nightmare to get me back into things, and man, those starting turns are dreadful!

Anyway, I wanted to ask what sort of mods you guys are using the most these days. What would you say is the best mod/scen combination for a good AE experience right now?

For realism, either DaBigBabes-C ( DBB-C) or RHS II.

I'm a huge fan of The Babes mods and all newer ones based on it.

I'm currently playing AndyMac's Ironman Nasty ported to Babes (scen. 40).

I'm in April '44 with AI still putting up a viable fight.

And I suggest adding the self-restriction "no fuel loaded in cargo spaces".

At first glance , this seems a very reasonable rule. And a player wants to obey it with all his heart. Then comes the weird situation that no one envisions when agreeing to rules. Somehow you run a sub out of fuel. It makes it damaged to a "dot" base , where there is no fuel. It's in a contested area. All you need is enough fuel to get it to safety. As there's no port to speak of , it's perfect to send a AKL on amphibious with minimum escort, and a low detection likelihood. But you can't because you've agreed to this house rule. So you now have the choice of risking a full sized tanker with a big capacity, or letting the sub rot there till the island gets taken and the sub scuttled , or the sub is discovered and sunk.

This is why I'd rather not be hung up on lots of "reasonable" house rules , and instead choose a "reasonable" opponent.

There is more "weirdness" in this game that can fit in your philosophy (or house rules) Horatio. Apologies to the Bard.

I've got a PBEM going as Japan playing Between The Storms Lite (BTSL) vs Gen Patton. This mod was done by John 3rd and FatR, but now is mainly John and I doing the heavy lifting. It focuses on a 'what if' for the IJN in the 30s with some improvements for the Allies at start. Japan should have more teeth left in late '43 and '44 when the Allies come knocking. John is a bigger JFB than I'm an AFB, so we keep the mod well balance, IMO. If your are looking at a 'what if' mod, I'll be highly biased and recommend this one (this mod takes out the Yamato Class and gives you 4 smaller BB instead).

Welcome back!!

As I recall, you were considered a pretty fearsome Allied player backin the day, racking up 5 or 6 Auto victory wins against strong Japanese players... or do I have you confused with someone else?

Thanks guys!

I have a question. I knew this once, but cant remember now.

If I want two installs of the game, I can just copy the entire AE-folder right? I want to have one clean setup for vanilla, and one with the babes.

Yes. I have separate installs for each of my games. It's a simple copy/paste operation.

Doesn't DBB require the extended map - which has some different data and picture elements to replace the stock map?
And you should decide if you want to use the new stacking limits in every land hex, vs. the stock S/L only on small islands/atolls.

So, I have installed the big babes B, the extended map, and the (marvellous!!) topo-map, aswell as aircraft art. But I cant find any ship art anymore. Anyone know where I can find ship art to go with DBB-B?

You know what, I intend to have such an HR for my games, and if this were the situation and my opponent did just as you propose it would not bother me. I would have a question to ask if I hit the xAK and saw the 'fuel burning' message. If you explained it as you did above I'd accept your reasoning, because you need to get that boat outta there somehow. As you propose its the only way, within the game anyway.

Right, as implied above, I would not even expect my opponent to inform me as such, as long as the intent of the rule were adhered to. I would not want to be tempted to 'search' for such a boat not matter how subconsciously.

So like many things in life there are grey areas. Some in game are black and white as well, but not all. It comes down to judgement. If in doubt, ask. I know this may lead to some problems, but I think most if not all here would attempt to 'follow the rules', and things could be worked out amicably.

Can't help with that one, but I am sure if you asked in the Mods forum the experts there could tell you what needs doing.

Welcome back to you and your avatar!

As for ship art, the stock stuff is quite good; however, if you're looking for something different, I'd recommend Big B's Shipyard. The "Direct Replacement" sides + shills, as well as the Japanese section are the game-ready assets.

It sounds like you already found Halsey's site, but double-check just in case (art art, squadron patches, LCU pics, etc.). It's also worthwhile to browse the Art Mods thread for various art items. There are some nice finds buried in there.
