The Ardennes Offensive goes freeware! - 1/4/2006 5:52:39 PM

Status: offline 		Just today I had read from WWW that game The Ardennes Offensive is officially available as freeware. Little digging revealed that it is made by SSG which has also made Korsun Pocket. I trust that web site I had read about this is reliable but I would like to have confirmation from here. Are there any other freeware games from SSG?

Status: offline 		The game has been free, if not "freeware" as such, for years.

It's HERE. The download link is about halfway down. It used to be on the Matrix servers too, as I recall - dunno if it still is. If you have either KP or BiN, you don't need TAO. I could never get it to run under XP either, despite trying all the usual tricks and settings.

Yeah according to that website it looks to be unlikely that Korsun Pocket will ever be made.

Status: offline 		The freeware version is not as up to date as the version included as a bonus campaign in Battles In Normandy. If you want the latest TAO, that's how to get it.

I played PBEM games regularly but it only runs on WIN 98

Included in Korsun Pocket is an updated and improved version of The Ardennes Offensive

Included in Battles in Normandy is an further updated and further improved version of The Ardennes Offensive taking advantages of the new features in BIN.

Status: offline 		My Question is as I bought BiI instead of BiN as BiI was newer is why isnt the TAO Scenario included in BiI also like it was in KP and BiN. That is dissapointing that they would remove it when it was included in the last 2 games come on Matrix and SSG release TAO for BiI also as an update or something.

Remember that "it" has changed over time somewhat, what you got in KP and BiN were new versions of the TAO scenario, not the original release.

I can understand where you are coming from if you only own BiI, but to be fair "Battles in Italy" never claimed to include the Ardennes scenario as well, and its hardly something a purchaser of a game with that title should expect. As to why it wasn't included, I suspect the developers had just taken it as far as they thought it could go - especially as the majority of BiI buyers already had TAO3, TAO4, or both, anyway.

Status: offline 		I understand your point however Matrix and SSG shouldn't assume that everybody that is buying BiI already owns KP or BiN. Some users maybe new to the SSG games and go for the latest version or some users may like the Italy battles and don't care for Normandy or Korsun. I am not asking they update it to TAO5 just include TAO4 for all I care that came with BiN and that would be fine with me. I don't see paying another 40-50 for BiN just to get TAO which was included as a free bonus in the first 2 games.


Just my opinion I am not mad and am happy with BiI but it would be nice to have TAO they can include it as a downloaded free scenario for BiI.

Status: offline 		Just thinking possibilities here. Remember TOA was originally a entire title of it's own. The update were nice extra's included by SSG. KP and BIN were the main attraction and TOA added to these gave you another full length scenario.

It could be argued that BII had extra value already as you were getting 3 full scenario's similar in length to KP, TOA, BIN in the Italy theatre. Also need to remember more improvements were made to the BII engine as well so with 3 full scenarios perhaps no time for a TOA update to that engine.

On the positive side you obviously enjoy this engine and series so if you purchase BIN look at all the value you are getting for something you enjoy.

I have all the SSG series, but had great difficulty learning them.

If you learn/play the original The Ardennes Offensive by SSG TAO240 is flattens the learning curve for the subsequent titles in The Decisive Battles Series.

The game will not run in compatible mode.

It will run with a win98se os, or install microsoft virtual pc 2007 and it will run on that without any problems.

Status: offline 		I bought the original SSG Korsun Pocket on CD and Across the Dnepr Second Edition via download. It works fine on Win 10. Yes, it is difficult to learn and the PDF manual is horribly organized. However, those with CD get a smaller paper tutorial-like manual that explains everything clear as a bell.

It's been a while, so the only thing I still have trouble with is the new "reinforcements" screen. Have no idea how it works, without reading the manual again - very carefully.

Status: offline 		SSG Battlefront game has a user made Stalingrad scenario sadly with no AI. The map is easy the best Stalingrad PC game map I've ever seen. Infact it probably is my fav game map of all time.

Go find it in Battlefront game forum.

Now if an AI was made for it I'd buy in a heart beat.

Status: offline 		Thakyou Eric ill grab it from BIN then instead cheers.Ive only just got all my SSG games running/working properly again after they seem to have gone wonky/corrupt or something like this,my mouse cursor was leaving traces across the whole screen etc and it would also freeze up before it crashed.It started when i tried to move all SSG library from one Drive to a Stick then made mistake and tried to un-do it all sigh right mess was what i ended up with,even fresh installs didnt fix each game.Then today after a pot chance i tried again and Hey Presto!Alls well that ends well.

Ill second that!!Ive also seen the lovely looking "stalingrad"scenario and cant belive it has NO AI.Maybe one day fella we will be lucky.
