We've had a bit of a hiatus in the past few days. The family here was getting over jet lag and I had to get antibiotics for a chest infection. Not so fun.

In addition, now, once I got back into it all and was running the latest turn, my laptop crashed. I lost that and to top it off it looks like it’s toast. No sign of life.

So … I need to figure out what to do next. I’ll try to get bootcamp and Windows going on my Mac finally and play on there if possible. If that doesn’t work I’ll need to get another game laptop. It might a day or two before I can get this going again.

That machine is the only one I’ve played WITP and WITP:AE on, so it was due a retirement!! It served me well!

I just wish I’d put it out to pasture in a planned way instead of unexpectedly seeing it topple over and die.

I do have a few updates still to make here, and some interesting action going on. I'll catch up and try to get this back on track soon.

So the Japanese Special Weapons program finally got a virus that could stop the Allies!

That's actually an impressive lifespan for a laptop. RIP.

It is, and I was suspecting some issues recently, and should have started contingency plans earlier! Oh, well. Maybe my hard rive needed a break as well!

Ok. Got a basic install working.

Can anyone give me a quick run down on installing the DBB files again? I've misplaced my saved notes, and I can't remember exactly the stuff I need to copy and paste to make it work correctly.

Thanks!

Ok. Got it all sorted. I’d set it all up and the turn didn’t run earlier, but realized I hadn’t installed the newer patch on that game version. Once loaded all seems to be working.

So disregard the above

April 23, 1942

Ok. So back to the reporting. I've sent Jeff the turn and he's run the latest with no problems.

The last days saw the Allies trying to put an end to the Mutsu, but it's still afloat as SS KIX spots her near Singkawang today. Five hits so far, but not under.

Other action is shown below.

The Allies though are planning to land on Malaya at Port Dickson, and the troops there, a tank regiment, are being decimated by air and sea bombardments. An Aussie brigade will arrive in a few days and should be able to take the base. Another brigade will follow at Patu Palat, where there appears t one only a Port Unit.

The goals here are to cut the rail and move on middle Malayan bases around Georgetown.

Heiho looks promising too given that the Japanese suffered far more destroyed squads, so the assault value ratio will swing in your favour once some of your disablements recover.

Yeah, and the forts are going down! That is key since the x3 terrain here is tough.

I can rotate tank brigades in and out quickly, and the IJA is cut off so should be nearly out of supply.

The 1st is one tough IJA division, but it's not going to be soon. This will be a good haul of destroyed troops unless he sends massive reinforcements right now, and even those would have to break through the 1,500AV guarding the approaches and resting up.

Sabang is crushed by another bombardment from Ashigara and company. I thought I'd damaged these ships a bit but apparently not enough to stop them from operating. Once the Port Dickson and Batu Paalat landings are finished I'll be able to turn the 4Es loose and hit Georgetown and Alor Star, where these ships can base.

Troop ships move to Singers and prepare for the invasion at Port Dickson. The Batu Palat troops are loading at Palembang.

Air strikes make a dent in the troops at Malacca and Port Dickson, but can't do anything with Batu Palat.

A few new airframes start production in May and we get our first Il-2 groups arriving. Should be interesting. I'm not sure how the armor 2 will act in game, but I'll certainly give them a try at low level ground bombing to see if it makes a difference!

The IL-2s are decent close support aircraft, but I can never scrape up enough Soviet pilots for the number of IL-2s available.

A very weak aircraft in game terms. Pitiful range and very weak bomb load. This does not reflect how effective they really were in real life. I find strafing to be quite impotent in the game (bombs are much more effective) and later versions of this aircraft don't get the improved ordinance that they actually had. (rockets for example). They probably were devastating when they got into action against Japan. Difficult for Japanese fighters or AA to bring down.

What crsutton said. Game does not do justice to IL-2
Had a lot of experience against Ironman AI. I'm using ILs as AA sponge on cut off AI stacks to deplete their supply, nothing more. It is not resilient enough to do strafing despite armor 2. Bombing from some height is fine though, lots of damaged planes but very few taken down. Damage to LCUs is pitiful even in clearer terrain - 100kg bombs suck.
First model does not have defensive armament and is helpless against fighters. Armor does not save them from Oscars. Was also the problem in RL, hence second model was rushed

The range is a big drawback for sure. I'm hoping they can conserve the 2E and hit bases I'd like to work on without too many losses of pilots or the longer range, more valuable planes. A lot of the areas we're fighting in are tight enough that 2-3 hexes can still be useful.

Some very odd, but pleasing, night battles this turn against IJN DDs. Lowpe sends in the small TFs, one of 5 DD to Singkep, but this decides not to engage an AM sent to minesweeper here. Interesting.

Then, 3 DD are sent to Palembang to raid the am-hubs in port. One DD stands in their way; Isis.

The first battle is over without a shot fired again. Then things get interesting. Outnumbered and outgunned, commander C.S.B Swinley using his maneuverability and lands one decisive shot on the bridge of DD Minegumo. Not sure what effect this has on the capabilities of the ship in later battles, but it seems that she didn't really play a part in subsequent battles and had a raging fire going throughout.

The next encounter sees Isis land two shots on DD Ayanami, again without taking a hit.

Next, Isis devastates the older, smaller DD Mikazuki with 29 hits, sinking her outright. Another single 4.7" shell lands on Minegumo, pushing her fires to 'heavy.' Again, the IJN cannot land a return shot.

Finally in the last battle of the night, Isis puts 29 hits onto DD Ayanami, sinking her, and three more on inegumo, putting her into danger with 'heavy fires, heavy damage.' This time Isis takes five hits from the beleaguered Japanese, leaving her with moderate damage, but no active fires after the turn. She'll head to a victory celebration and repair at Singers next turn.

In other news our troops begin to land at Port Dickson after bombardments further weakened IJA units there. I'll suspend unloading and let the ones on the ground attack tomorrow in case there is a reaction by LBA or the KB.

Allied troops finally take Djambi as part of the 4th division is there and I didn't want them to be flown back to combine again with the element at Malacca. They retreat back to the North out of harm's way. I'll let them sit there and wither slowly.

At Heiho another DA gets forts to 3 but only a 1:2 adjustment. I bet the next will be even or positive though, and then it'll be a steady road to annihilation of these IJA forces.

Huzzah for Isis - a great showing! IIR her crew has great experience and she is very effective in an ASW TF as well.

Exactly! Not sure what she was before but her crew is probably the best in the Allied fleet now! After this one they're 81/75!!

April 26, 1942

Things didn't go to plan today. One, I wanted to stop unloading and retire the Port Dickson invasion TF, but didn't click it to stop. Second, my LR CAP was over the xAKLs I had moved into the area to set up a CAP trap. So, the KB moved in and instead of hitting a large LR CAP over low value ships, hit some CLs, a few decent xAP and a lot of small transports. Overall, it's not a disaster, but not what I needed when I had the opportunity to hit those planes hard.

The Aussies did take Port Dickson and the tank regiment was destroyed outright. So that's positive.

We also take Padang. That armoured brigade will now move on to the NW part of Sumatra.

Hard to lose two of these for nothing here, even though they're old. I like them for the missions I don't want to send amore valuable ship on.

Yes, on the side of Malaya NW of Malacca. Also I think Port Swettenham may be a DBB base, just to the North of Port Dickson.

Lowpe sends a lot of night striking TB every turn. None have had any success yet, but Have no NF, so one day it may payoff. At Singers the Flak gets one this turn.

Our landing at Batu Palat does land effectively, with only about 25% disablement of the Aussie brigade. At 30% prep, that's not bad! There does appear to be a lot more here now though, with an infantry battalion and tank regiment plus the port unit, and I don't think this unit will take the base soon. I'l need to bombard by sea and air for a good while here, while moving to take Malacca with the other unit from Port Dickson, then move it in too.

I have an Indian ID queued up and ready to land at a base that we own, but need the KB to back off before I risk that move. It's still sitting off of Malaya, and seems to have sent about 35 Vals to their doom today, with no escort. I'll take it! Especially with KB pilots on board.

The air war is good today, with no efforts to stop our work against Malacca or Batu Palat, and the destroyed bombers. Lowpe did sink a couple of small TK at Medan.

The 28th sees the rest of the Aussie brigade successfully land at Batu Palat. Now for some naval work on the troops there. I'll wait about a week to even think about attacking, and bombard nightly. Nice and close to Singers.

I have some troops I'm going to try to steak into Sibolga on Sumatra to walk across to Medan and other bases. I need to fortify and have the bases build over there.

Got a nice haul of Oscars for nothing over Malacca as my LR CAP did a job on the lower IJA fighters. Surprised how well my pilots are doing with early war Allied planes.

At Heiho we get a good 1:1 and forts go to 2, so now the fall is imminent. This is going to be a good haul of IJA troops and VPs. Over 21k of decent units including a very good ID and two tank regiments plus the other supporting units and an HQ.

CV Illustrious arrives at Capetown! This brings our IO CV fleet to four RN CVs, (if you include Hermes in that) and I'll be using them soon more regularly. The USN CV fleet is nearly ready to start moving again, and I've also got designs on the Russian bases Japan captured and has been kindly building up for us.

You're going to cut them into slabs and send them to the hungry Japanese? I think there are some flaws in that plan!
Or maybe you meant to type "speak", so you will BS your way into Sibolga, pretending to be traveling minstrels or arms merchants?

April 29, 1942

Sorry for the lack of updates. Busy RL stuff plus a slower than normal pace here. I think Jeff must be busy too, although I haven't heard much about the delay. We used to get 1/day back and forth, but lately it's 1/two-three days.

Subs drop mines near Batu Palat but our industrious Fairmile B MLs find the field before bombardment TFs move through in the night.

Zeros sweep Sabang again, but this time the defending P-40E have the bounce and knock down four of the IJN’s best. He seems reluctant to play the altitude game and that’s fine, as 25k wins out this time. He does lose a lot at higher altitudes with the A6M2 so I get it.

Night strikes and daytime 4E strikes went ofr Singkawang, where Mutsu is holed up. I decided to try for the fields and port, and did get some damage on each, including 3 500lb bomb hits to Mutsu. Not bad, but I suspect this will be the best chance for a while. More groups will be added in now.

The 4Es and 2Es have other business to attend to anyway, but I want Lowpe o have to protect both Pontiniak where CA Maya is holed up and Singkawang. That should leave more leeway to hit troops along the Malayan coast and make sure the lower Malaya airfields are damaged. I’ll then try to get more troops in and go for the middle Malayan bases. Georgetown is the goal.

Up in Soviet territory Heiho drops another fort lever and the DA gets a 2:1. Nearly done here. IJAAF bombers hit tanks in a Mongolian desert area, and I’ll have to retreat there. Too far from airbases to defend.

I don't really believe these totals anymore, but 631 A6M2 downed would be a LOT for May 1 of this campaign if that is true. That would be about 125/month lost. He might be making more soon with R & D finishing on next models and changing those to production, but This means likely he has lost more than he's produces so far.

The end of April and the Allied position is stronger than ever in the DEI. Singers is nearing forts 6 and has increased field size to 7. The Allies have now established a firm hold along the SW Malay coastline with two bases held and a third in contention. I'll attack at Batu Palat in a few days.

If the Aussies can get a hold of the rail lines I'll land tanks, base forces, an Indian ID and other useful bits and pieces for a drive to the NW Malay bases around Georgetown. I worry that the IJA will leave Singers, bringing 6 strong divisions into play here, but the Allies are bringing more in every day, and with good defensive terrain, there is a chance the Addition of another Brit ID could be enough to hold in x3 terrain in middle Malaya.

Sumatra is building and growing in importance for the Allies. Oosthaven is the port of entry for dozens of new Allied units and airgroups arriving in the next two weeks and beyond. Palembang is developing into a strong airfield, close to maxing out, and Paebemolih and Benkolen are good supporting fields.

I'll also begin devoting the recently conquered island bases between Sumatra and Malaya, and eventually make the jump to Borneo, where in about a month I'd like to develop a base for sweeping the NW coast of Borneo.

On the 30th bombardments hit the Malay coastline again. More mines are picked off by the passing TF DDs and dedicated minesweepers. The I-boats strike against some small transports at Sabang and Medan.

The big news is that the IJN releases the Netties for the first time en masse. Luckily they reach out to hit a relatively unimportant TF landing troops at Sibolga on the NW Sumatran coast. Several ships are sunk, which is not great, but the troops all land with only minimal losses. These are base forces, remnants of other units left in the first stages of transport from India, and other engineer and support units to beef up Medan and bases on the East side of Sumatra.

I have to be careful even close to Singers now. If I can get up and take Georgetown, Alor Star and surrounding bases in a few weeks it will really diminish strike possibilities against landing and supplying troops in Northern Sumatra and middle Malaya.

His strikes started high, so I have to be careful of where LR defensive CAP is set here. This is also an opportunity to get a lot of IJN planes shot down, so I'll think of how to set some traps here. It'll help to get some more support units to Medan, the biggest airfield in central Sumatra.

It is May! The P-38E beings production!!!

More night bombardments of Batu Palat hit all of the units there for some damage. I'll attack in a day or two with the well rested Aussies.

The 2E and some 4E hit Johore Baru hard. It should be closed. I just want to make sure since it is decent size 4 base that he doesn't drop some fighters here to support strikes against Singers or nearby bases. We also hit size 2 Kuantan airfield for about 20-30 damage.

Up North Heiho Falls! About 3k more IJA troops are disabled or destroyed, and another 18-20k will be captured and sent to the Gulags soon. This is a huge marker for the Soviets. There is still time to move on the central Manchurian plains area, but first I'll let some units rest and reallocate some forces to make sure we're ready for the loss of air parity coming soon. A few units withdraw soon, but also some brigades will be arriving.

Near Palembang the troops herding the former defenders get a 1:1 DA and gain a lot of experience right away. I added lower EXP troops here to grind it out with the IJA, who should have very little if any supply. This is another 9-10k about to be turned into VPs, including a split 4th ID, one of the first to cross the causeway into Singers and taking huge losses then. It's not been their war.

CV Yorktown is a few days from being all fixed up after taking a torpedo near the HI a while back. I'll be sending the 3 USN CVs out together. I think the KB is split and the smaller bit is in the Northern area. Could be good hunting up there!

The air groups from Enterprise and Lexington are now almost all bought back. This should provide us both with some flexibility about how to set up the CVs as well as some good pilot training. Always trying to look on the bright side here.

Wait! Did Heiho get a US star after changing hands? How did Stalin allow the American observer to claim the base?

And what are the model P-28E beings? Do they resemble humans? Are you cloning them or using more traditional methods of production?
