Libyan-Egyptian war

Background: Relations between Libya and Egypt were tumultuous over more than two decades after Qaddafi rose to power in Libya. Qaddafi's virulent brand of socialistic-Islamic fundamentalist government clashed frequently with the more moderate and pragmatic socialistic government of Egypt. Although technically allied with each other against Israel during the Arab-Israeli war, relations between Egypt and Libya had soured to such a point that full-scale armed conflict broke out. This though was only one part of a much larger war that would engulf the western hemisphere in armed conflict.

America: during this time, America remained neutral, but her military leaders were making plans to implement " WAR PLAN RED" She saw Africa as important because of the Suez Canal and she wanted to make sure that America controlled this vital waterway in order to prevent the UK and the European's from sending reinforcements to Canada when war comes.

The Egyptian-Libyan war began in August 1955, with the Egyptian 3rd Army crossing the border and capturing the Libyan port of Tobruk meeting no resistance. Independent Egyptian units consisting of two light Tank Divisions and 1 Motor Rifle Brigade crossed the border near the Libyan city of Al'Jawf pushing aside a Libyan infantry Division, capturing the city.

The Egyptian air force consisting of over 200 fighters engaged Libyan aircraft thereby destroying over 50 Libyan fighters.

Egyptian Airforce leaders thinking the bulk of the Libyan air force had been neutralized, sent fighter bombers against Libyan forces near Al'Jawf, but was ambushed by Libyan Mig-19's based out of Tripoli ( the Libyan capital). Egyptian losses were high resulting in the sacking of the Egyptian air force general.

By October September 1955 two Egyptian tank divisions had reached the outskirts of the Libyan city of Sabha launching a full scale assault against the city, resulting in heavy Egyptian losses in men and material. On October 20th, the Egyptians had regrouped and tried again, this time successfully taking the city, but suffered heavy casualties.

In the North the Egyptian 3rd Army had unsuccessfully tried to take the mountain passes, taking heavy losses. This defeat the Egyptians hoped would open the northern front thereby dooming Libyan defenses. The 3rd Army had to regroup before resuming the offensive.

In the face of stubborn Libyan resistance, the Egyptian high command may have to move either the 1st or 2nd Army to support the invasion, as it is becoming clear they misjudged the will of Libyan armed forces to resist. The Egyptians also were surprised to find an entire Infantry corp from Cuba waiting on them with a tank brigade in reserve near the Libyan capital.

They also have to keep a wary eye on her southern border against Sudan because if the war in Libya lasts much longer and Egypt becomes bogged down, the Sudanese may find that their best chance of gaining her national objectives is to attack Egypt sooner rather than later.

Egyptian forces finally break through Libyan defenses on the Northern front. With the way clear, the only other obstacle before the Libyan capital is the city of Sirte.

with the fall of Sirte, victory is at hand as Egyptian forces begin advancing on the Libyan capital. Remnants of the Libyan armed forces as well as Cuban forces have fallen back for a last ditch stand.

In western Africa, Nigeria in the throws of her worst economic decline in decades, and the rising tension with Cameroon, over disputed oil fields and the west's ignoring Egyptian aggression has caused the Government of Nigeria to make the decision on war against her neighbors and the capturing of vital oil fields.

Greater Nigeria now has support from the Military and her goal of dominance in this part of Africa is now a reality. Nigerian Military know that the EU will support Cameroon but the only military assets that the EU have for immediate deployment is her Mediterranean navy and one Airborne Corps. It will take time for the European armed forces to prepare for war, and this Nigeria knows.

The Government of Nigeria has sent diplomatic missions to both Sudan and Ethiopia in the hopes of forming an alliance against Egyptian aggression, but also against the EU. The Nigerian's are using Europe's past colonization of Africa as a means in bringing both of these nations into line.
