Lurking still.

Have you thought of - tried to - counter attack those blank ports / towns south of Manila ?

Can you spare a brigade ?

I do wonder if there are 'residual' supply / fuel / resources that would feed Manila potentially for the cost of nothing ?

I'm guessing his troops are just South there and would nail any move I'd make. I can have a look with some recon and see. Doesn't hurt to give it a look.

I'd also worry about bombing there.

May 13, 1942

The only bad luck that comes my way on the 13th is a section of DDs operating around Mersing that sink the two little Flower class KV I'd sent for ASW duties. My bad, as I didn't change their patrol orders lat turn after their successful hits on two subs. It is nice to know he's quick to react. I think I can use that in the future to lay some traps. A sub at Kuantan sank an IJN DMS to get a bit of payback.

The bombardments at Johore continue to by anaemic, probably due to the low moonlight, now at 0%. That doesn't seem to affect the R class BBs at Singers though, which are now getting some good results against the troops there. I feel like this is a bit of a shooting gallery now, with his main body of troops no longer the aggressor at Singers but trapped there and hanging on while being pounded daily. Supply can't be good right now after all of this, and this many be forcing the KB and other big units to be involved in relief missions to Kuantan and Mersing. It feels a bit like a bigger version of Guadalcanal, where the Japanese are suddenly having to support a large forward position that is increasingly untenable, and must send in the IJN to very vulnerable locations to do this.

My DBs and TBs are training up on Java and waiting for the right moment, but I will begin to use them around Singers soon. I've got 5 groups of DBs and a bunch of random TBs around, able to move into Singers and strike. I've got to make sure the KB is out of range though.

The big news this turn is that the troops formerly at Palembang have now been completely eliminated. He'll now be able to begin rebuilding the 4th division, but it'll not be complete until I finish the job against the troops that were at Djambi, where part of one of the regiments is still hanging out in the jungle. I'll probably not go for kill any time soon.

Having Singapore as a base at this stage of the war for the Allies is a complete game changer. As you can see below, it has a good amount of flak now, is approaching forts 6, will have 100k plus supply in only a few more turns, and is about to go to airfield size 8 which will allow an even bigger presence and the possibility of well escorted large strikes against anything nearby.

The Allied garrison here also ties down a large contingent of the free IJA for now, allowing the rest of the Allied forces to flow onto Malaya and move up the coastline. I've not decided yet what to do here. I could try to trap the 4-5 divisions at and around singers as well. We'll see how this develops.

A few interesting things developing today. First, the 18th British ID is almost fully installed at Batu Palat, bringing AV totals here to 1200+. In total, with the units at Singapore, the Allies now just about equal IJA units in strength. Soon ,as the above post shows, some more good troops will e transferred over, including two tank regiments, a tank brigade, another Aussie brigade and two regiments of the American division.

Subs can't get in touch with the KB, but do find BB Haruna near Kuantan. Interesting these ships are hanging around here. I wonder what's happening at Kuantan? I've been getting a look around at a few other Malaya bases, but I'll have to circle back to Mersing and Kuantan to check on numbers and activity.

The Soviets are about to enter Tsitsahar. More is on the way arriving slowly over the next few days. Tanks though are spreading around the base. I have an idea I'd like to try here. See if I can't isolate and change direction.

On the 15th some more subs encounter large IJN forces with no luck. One is near Cam Rahn Bay and looks like the KB, and I don't see any search indication of the KB near Malaya anymore. It might have slipped the net.

The RAF has started night bombing Magwe with no luck. Some other strat bombing is still achieving minor results in Manchuria, and I'm also going for resources at Haiphong. Might as well.

I managed to slip a Soviet DD past Paramushiro, but was attacked by Vals. The I-16s at Petropavlosk put up a valiant fight, downing a few IJN planes for 3 lost of their little pesky planes.

No other major news in the DEI, where the transfer of troops continues. I've been having bad thoughts about them all getting over there and suddenly the KB rounding Java and putting an end to resupply and reinforcement, but that is seeming not only less likely but less possible day by day. The amount of supply here now would likely last 3-4 months, and I have a lot more on the way. Plus, the area of entry is so large not even an aggressive KB could stop everything from getting in.

The PI

This is something not seen for a good while; a fighter group sitting on the field in Manila.

I quietly transferred these P-40E, originally one of the PI groups I believe, through Borneo to Manila. Hopefully the milk runs (at 12k) will continue here and at Clark tomorrow.

There is also a Beaufighter unit stationed at Malaybalay. Fingers crossed.

What was the plan for that Soviet DD going past PJ? Raiding? Picket? Repairs? Goodwill tour to Anchorage?

Just getting it out to safer territory. Also good to see what the response is like up here. I got a lot of info from that DD run on this turn and the next.

It'd been up around Okha and consistently picked up by search. I've got a few more still at Vlad, but it's better to get this one out and it can hang out and help retake some Soviet Islands next.

Uh, oh!!

I made a bit of a mistake today. Instead of having a large 2kAV army stroll into Tsitsihar and bombard the IJA there, I had only 1100 AV make it! I didn't realise my other units had been set for a previous hex and stopped early. So that screws up everything I am doing here and will possibly have dire consequences tomorrow. The IJA has a stiff 2100AV defence and lots of heavy arty, which pounds our two IDs and tanks in counter bombardments. The two Soviet divisions here are a bit beat up, but very experienced, and set to withdraw to fight Germans in about 6 weeks. I wanted to get one last effort out of the Soviets before those withdrawals, but it looks bad now if the Japanese attack, and I completely expect they will.

Ive decided to call a full retreat. My plan was fun, to invest Tsitsihar and then use armor to open the sides of the hex (closing off the Japanese from these exits as well) and let our units out to run down toward the area around Kiamuze and try to open the block there. It was a good idea, but I'll have to try that elsewhere I think. I've ordered all other units out of Tsitsihar, and the armor will get out unscathed, but if he attacks the two divisions plus an Army HQ, an AA unit and a few arty will get trashed I'm sure in this clear hex.

In the PI things were a bit better as the IJAAF kept sending the milk runs to Manila and Clark. The P-40s took out 25 bombers for no losses!

Now they'll run back home. At Malaybaly nothing struck so those Beaufighter will withdraw as well. Both groups will support a 4E strike on Balikpapan and Samarinda in a few days.

The 17th brings mixed results. As predicted, the Japanese struck at Tsitsihar, crushing two Soviet IDs and getting back a portion of the previously lost ground troop Ops we'd just won at Hailar. A bad mistake on my part, just forgetting settings and having the army enter the hex separately. All attacks are off and now I'll roll back into defensive turtle for about two years. Forts are nearly built, and the troops are mostly in place already, so these out here will largely be a reserve to counter any major push by the IJA. It's quite a reserve, with two armor divisions, a massive mechanised division, and lots of arty and AA.

Down in the more important battles in the DEI the introduction of some TBs to Singapore had an immediate effect. I'd noticed the BBs hanging quite close at Kuantan, and thought it was worth a shot. Two strikes later and the Haruna took two fish, both with listing and counter flooding messages, one also with engine damage. Yard time at least, and another BB out of the way for a while. Subs are vectored in to see if more can be done. Strikes also went for some little CMs at the base, unfortunately, but at least this lets me know not to try any more bombardments there. Probably a while lot of spikes metal exploding balls floating around now.

Aside from that the movement of troops continues. Imagine everything that usually goes to So Pac going to the DEI. Now imagine everything that usually goes to Burma going to the DEI. then imagine all of it concentrating on Malaya. That's what is happening right now.

See below for the best news of the day!!

Singapore reaches forts 6 and fields 8 on the same turn!!

Also, as you can see here, there is a bit more supply in the base as well! I'll stop forts and bring it to a size 9 field next to be able to keep unlimited numbers of planes here. I'm running into problems with number of groups allowed with the smaller sized Allied groups. Then I'll turn fort building back on.

The night of the 18th starts out well. A Soviet sub hits a nice plump xAP near Cam Rahn Bay. Looks loaded as well, and sinking sounds were heard.

Then the Trout, finding the IJN BBs with her newly installed radar set, also manages to locate a working Mk 14 and plants it (and a dud, just after) into the side of BB Hiei. Just what I'd hoped, and a long way to the shipyard.

Daytime brings RN CVs in range of Balikpapan. Sweeps crush the CAP of Oscars and Rufe float fighters, and the following 4E strikes knock another 30+ points off of the Balikpapan oil and 20+ off of the Samarinda fields.

This gives the RN CV jocks some good kills, with about 30 IJ fighters downed for only 3 Martlets. Three Marine fighter groups are also involved.

Black Oil Update

The strike was decent, catching the CAP in a less than favourable situation and getting free strikes at the wells, but of course at extended range for the B-17E, so only half loads. Took off around 40 points total. I should be able to keep gradually whistling it down and go to night strikes once CAP becomes too daunting.

I would have two subs in parallel patrol zones between CRB and Hong Kong. Hopefully, you can sink a cripple trying to reach the repair shipyard at HK.

Some interesting news about the Haruna. It's now listed in the sunk reports as going down near Cam Rahn Bay. Two hexes off in fact. I don't believe it's sunk for a minute, but that hex is straddled by two subs and I have 4-5 more in the area that will vector in. I've also brought in some search to the Pi to aim that direction.

Maybe I can catch her or the Hiei for another go at it.

Seems much more likely that Lowpe would have those damaged BBs hole up in the nearest port to work on system damage before risking a move to a shipyard. He also knows you well enough to be wary of the subs you always vector onto cripples.
That said, two torpedo hits and additional damage messages afterward could mean the ship just never made port. We should know in six months or so ...

After seeing Mutsu take 5 torpedoes (!!) and make port, and Myoko take (IIRC) 3 fish plus a few bombs and still get back, I won't believe the reports just now. The Hiei is still out there with some damage as well, so the hunt is on.

He does seem to head for the nearest port, but the nearest bases are dot hexes. He wouldn't sit them there so close to Singers would he? Hmmmmm.

I have enough recon to check them all in a day and do some scout bombing.

Sinking reports are a bit odd that way - I find what it means is that the ship added some points of damage or suffered an adverse repair event (couldn't confidently say which, but I'm pretty comfortable saying it's one of them) in the location reported. That is to say, actually the fact that it had an updated sinking location kinda means it's more likely to be afloat (on the presumption that if it's able to move that fast it's probably not as badly damaged as all that), but you know where - can also be used to track e.g Pearl Harbour survivors as they head back to the US for repairs, that sort of thing.

The 19th brings no sighting of any damaged BBs or their escorts. Subs do encounter the xAP TF now heading for Kota Bharu. No hits. An s-class does pick off a supply trip by a single xAKL to Mersing. Good intel there. He is suffering from the rail being closed off and desperate to get supply into the troops South of Malacca.

Allied forces continue to pile into Batu Palat and slowly move out to Malacca where the roads are better. The Allies now have an Indian and a British ID landed, plus three Aussie brigades, and Indian brigade, two Indian tank brigades and several smaller armoured units. A lot more is on the way. I'm now beginning to prep units for landings along the Burmese coastline.

At Singers naval bombardment are now taking a toll as a land bombardment shows IJA AV down from 1500+ to 1387 now. Supply will be running short, disruption and fatigue continuing to grow, and these troops getting closer and closer to being cut off completely. Instead of my original pan to capture middle Malaysia first, I may go for Kluong, Mersing and swing a blocking force into Johore Baru to completely isolate these major IJA divisions. If that works the Allies would need space for 100k more troops in POW camps.

In Soviet lands the solo 111th tank division continues to get pummelled from the air, but mostly suffers disabled. It'll have plenty of time to recover before it's next battle.

A lot of fighters now in upper Malaya. Probably supporting whatever landing is happening up there. Odd that not a lot of troops shown in base. I know troops are on this TF as it was hit by a sub earlier.

Can you get some US Marine CD units into Malaya?? Symon reported to me years ago that they have some of the best artillery for the Allies. Plus, you would have something in case Jeff tries to bombard your troops along the coast.

We think alike!!

Two Marine Defence units are 7 hexes out of Oosthaven, with 2-3 more on the way (basically all of them I can scrape up that aren't in the Aleutians).

They have great guns once they upgrade. Not bad now. I've got a US CD unit in Merak, a few Indian ones scattered around in Sabang, in Singers and on Malaya, and any more that arrive will all be heading this way. The RN base forces also have some 6 inch guns, so those are extra useful.

I also like the idea of putting them on some of the straits bases scattered around so if ships wander through they get shot up. All of the dots spreading out between Malaya and Borneo are crying out for mines and CD guns.

I think the Brit 6" guns can also upgrade to more accurate/faster firing models, no?

I'm not sure about that. I think those continue to be the standard. I'll have a look.

Subs are finding BBs, but not always the right ones. The Skipjack found another working Mk 14 for a big tanker near the Celebes that is fleeing the Balikpapan area.

I sent some small minesweepers into Singkawang, and they did good initial work on clearing the minefields there to prepare for bombardments. I want to see his reaction right now. I won' go ahead until I have DMS ready to get more out of the way. Unfortunately these didn't respond correctly to orders, and instead of flanking in and out, stayed in hex to be caught by later raids. I hate losing any escorts at this stage, but they at least were useful in their demise.

The bombers take on the job of supply destruction in lower Malaya, hitting Kluong mercilessly, and making some progress at Mersing. Another group hits Den Passar where I worry a Nettie strike package could emerge. So far he hasn't used the level 3 field there at all. It should be closed after today's strikes, but I'll let the Dutch B-10s keep going at it for a few more days.

In Soviet lands the 111th tank division keeps getting pounded. Not many destroyed though, which is a positive. Tomorrow it should be clear. I'll now work on how best to allocate the very good Soviet AA units across the map in defensive positions.

One amazing piece of info from SIGINT I forgot to report a few days ago is a CVL sighting location. CVL Shoho is moving to Maizuru. This should confirm that a mini-KB is still operating in the Northern Pacific and that the KB is not unified as one strike force. Love getting this kind of stuff, although it's rare! Subs are already vectoring in to see if they can make a contact.

Something interesting is brewing. My little Lysanders flying recon over Hong Kong have found that there may be some cruisers and destroyers in port repairing, along with several auxiliaries, including AR types. There are only 10 fighters listed as well. The DL of 9/10 gives me some confidence to go for it here. I've decided to take a massive risk and fly 4Es back into Clark Field to get within normal bombing load range form this nice big level 8 field. Ahhhh, feels good to be back!

For now anyway. Clark has a 1/6 detection level, which makes me think he won't necessarily notice that all of these 4Es are here without CAP protection! Yikes!

I've set 2Es in China as well, and sent one small P-38 group to China to help sweep. The AVG will fly escort and LR CAP from Kukong. Strikes at the oil have resulted in a concentration of fighters there on Borneo and in Malaya, and it looks like other areas are less well defended. I'll also recon Cam Ranh Bay and Saigon to see what is there tomorrow.

In other news, 10 x DB-3M make a very successful night strike on the airfields at Harbin. This is why I like to set an HR on night bombing airfields and ports. Only 10 bombers got 18 hits to the fields, and destroyed 2-4 Oscars while the damaged planes messages in the replay were through the roof. If I set the 150 2E in range I might be able to close this base in one night strike. That is simply too much, but under 50 bombers it at least can be managed.

At Singers I've decided to set all bombardments to hit Singers troops. The ones at Johore seem to be more heavily fortified and results are getting better and better at Singers as moonlight improves. Tomorrow five different TFs will bombard, including the four R class BBs.

The battle at Langsa continues, but the Dutch take a hit in the second round. I'll walk them out and let the armor pound away in a few turns after fatigue goes back down from two 1:2 results in a row.

The 22nd opens with Soviet subs having some success in the DEI. They were languishing without target and getting hit by tooo many ASW bombs up near the HI, so I've based about 15 out of Manila.
