Today the bombers flew. The AVG easily brushes aside some Notes and Hong Kong port takes a pounding.

Based on yesterday's recon, I changed some orders and sent the longer ranged LB-30 and B-17D to Cam Ranh Bay. This was unexpected!!!

Awesome to get a few hits on a Japanese fleet CV in port, and I'm sure this rattled Lowpe to the core. Unfortunately the seven 500lb GP bombs look to have all bounced except one that destroyed a 12.7cm mount. At least a fire was going at the end of the turn. No idea what damage this may have caused, but it's sure to make him keep the Zuikaku off the front lines and get her patched up, I'd think. Can't believe the luck of this one!!

The two BBs hit by torpedoes recently were also holed up there, the Hiei and Haruna. They also took a few bouncers each.

The ships at Hong Kong look to be devastated, with maybe one or two surviving the strikes. Unfortunately there weren't CA and DD as the rollover had shown, but the ARs wiped out are a nice bonus.

At Cam Rant Bay the KB is also parked in hex, and subs will be thrown this direction from all over the DEI tomorrow in an effort to hit the damaged Zuikaku again. I'm pretty sure he'll leave the base, and I'm guessing will head toward Bangkok with the main body, but may send the Zuikaku toward the HI. I'll work on both of those paths.

Wow- five or six ARs clobbered in one place - talk about putting all your eggs in one basket. That will hurt his plans to operate the navy at small, newly conquered ports. Their position in HK rather than Truk suggests he might be staging for a move into the IO?

And of course plastering carriers in port is always good times for the plasterer (but not the plasteree!)

EDIT: Thought of another reason those ARs would be in HK - there are in the process of conversion to AR in the SY - which takes something like 9 months.

Could be, could be. He might miss these for sure, and the points are good once they're converted to AR.

I've threatened HK before too, so kind of surprised it was left less defended. Cam Ranh Bay without CAP and CVs and BBs in port boggles my mind!!

This is a look at recent additions for coastal defence. The two Marine Defence units here are outstanding. I love them.

I've also just added the big 57th CD gun Rgt with 20+ guns. Merak is now a fortress. Nothing is getting through. I will move the two Marine units. I'm considering putting them on the SE DEI in bases that are pretty vulnerable now. Probably Koepang and Ambon. I'll be sending more troops and supply that way in the next weeks to guard the flank a bit better and keep some options open to eventually get to the PI with some supply.

Naval forces engage on the night of the 23rd!!

The moonlight is improving, which helps the Allies a bit here, although I didn't expect to find the BB Ise around here. I'd only seen cruisers on search. Luckily I sent a lot this way!

Tennant crosses the 'T' and gets in a few first shots, but CA Cornwall takes some significant damage while the Allies sink one DD and extensively damage another. The Ise shrugs off a few hits and doesn't even show fires.

Next up the RN runs into Atago with two CL and two DD. This is a tough TF and this would've turned out badly if CA Devonshire hadn't landed a TT in the side of Atago. Cornwall detaches after this and heads for home with 50 float damage, but only 25 system, so she will make Singers and have some time in the docks.

The CLs came in next and ran into some CMs and their escorts. A big TF, which seems to be Lowpe's style. Makes for good shooting.

Dewey shows heavy damage here form a collision apparently, I found out later.

The CLs then found the still very feisty Atago and one DD, but got a lot of shots in and left her burning and in trouble. At the least she'll be in the yard for a good while, but I hope to catch her tomorrow with some subs or something else.

Only the Hobart continued on to bombard, and I was worried the primary mission wouldn't work out, but ...

I didn't have to fear though, as the last TF to be involved here, two RN CAs and two CLs got some good licks in. A fantastic bombardment actually, really messing up ground troops as well.

I'd thought things were pretty much wrapped up, but then Ise pops up again and the depleted RN cruisers do their best to knock some holes in her. CA Dorsetshire ends up in trouble in this one, and after the turn has 69 float damage with 45 fires still burning. Not good, and 6 hexes out of Singers. Fingers crossed.

The four cruiser TF then shows up to save the day, knocking out the remains IJN DDs and dropping 21 shells onto Ice and two fish in her side!!

I think she disbanded in Singkawang, So another stranded BB that either has to negotiate the sub infested waters or fight off increasing bombing runs on the port.

I was about to relax and enjoy the rest of the minimal events of the turn when suddenly ... here is Zuikaku again!!

This time old, rusty S-41 gets into Cam Ranh Bay hex and lands one of four into here. As shown below this resulted in a belt armor penetration and II see a 'severe damage' message, but no explosions. I'd say yard time for sure after the bombing runs of the previous day, but I bet she scooted off out of range somewhere and will easily make it back to a repair yard.

I thin know the KB in the area will be Kaga, Hiryu and Soryu bases on air groups participating yesterday.

In looking at the perfectly distributed damage of this TF I wonder if one of the advantages of crossing the 'T' due to a good commander is just this; all ships are shooting but they're also all bing attacked, where the other side is having one ship take all of the shots. I know this is the idea on the offensive side, but hadn't thought about the defensive side before.

All of these ships will need 3-4 weeks in Singers at the least. I think so far it might have been worth it though.

Worth it? You lost no ships, right? And you devastated his DDs once again, plus maybe sank Atago. Of course it is worth it! Well done!

You set up this victory by sinking so many of his first-class DDs in previous battles and he is now using smaller second-class DDs like Sanae that were meant for convoy escort, not fleet escort. Soon he'll be using TBs for fleet escorts.

On the day the air losses aren't quite were I'd hoped. Too many fighters made it out of Singkawang. It only shows 12 there today whereas the day before it was 45. With less than 10 lost, that means over half escaped. Too bad.

The fields are messed up though, which is positive, and now Kuching is the only strong airbase useable in the area. It is also in range of bombardments and air strikes though, so it's potentially risky for him to put 50-70 fighter and 100 bombers there, as it looks like he now has. There are mines laid, as a sub just hit one, but four other subs were in hex and didn't, and the Grunion only has minor damage.

Here is the sunk list for yesterday. If this were true it'd be amazing!! Definitely worth it, but sadly Zuikaku is still afloat, somewhere, but has gone stealth.

The night of the 24th started with a bang!! I detached the escorts from the Dorsetshire and two damaged DDs and decided to send these two, the Alwin and Dale, back toward the visible cruiser TF with the strike Atago in it. I knew the IJN would be short on ammo, and although these DDs were out of torpedoes, they both had 10/16 for all of the 5inch guns left.

The ran in and not only found Atago, but BB Use and a bunch of escorts and support ships united in one TF. Lowpe has a tendency to do this to protect the capitol ships from subs, but against surface threats it means the hens are all in one house and the door is open for the foxes. Alwin and Dale take advantage. I watched this replay carefully, and wanted to see how the shots were landing.

Use took the brunt of 5 x 5inch hits to the superstructure and 2 more glancing blows to the belt armor. She sank after a hit to the superstructure, so I guess the fires that were going were increased and resulted in unsustainable system damage during the fight!! Awesome!!

I've never seen a BB taken out by 5inch guns like this, but I guess she was in pretty bad shape after 2 torps, 30+ shots from 8inch and 6inch guns, and having to dodge around while burning on day two.

the USN DDs then went for Atago right away, and left her burning more furiously with two superstructure shots. They then hits the AKE extensively and some of the escorts before shooting all of the way back home to Singers and disbanding in port!

(I had trouble finding them the next turn until I looked in port).

So yes, although Doresetshire did go down during the day, with an IJN BB and a CA most likely sunk along with 3-4 DDs, now this is completely worth it!!

The Ashigara TF makes itself known again over near Georgetown. They hit a few MTBs before going in to bombard Port Swetenham for minimal damage. Happy to see them out, since I know they must still have some damage from the 350kg bombs that hit earlier.

For tomorrow I have to now make sure to protect shipping around Batu Palat, and I've sent two SCTFs there to patrol and react.

The bombardments were decent against the fields but really must have messed up the support units on the ground. It feels like this base is trashed for a good long while.
