Hello fellow Commanders !

I'm currently playing a nerve breaking and mind blowing scenario (The Four Horsemen) and I ran into a situation I feel is a bit odd. My Lira sub, lying above the layer, got detected, identified, triangulated, tracked and, unfortunately, torpedoed. What is bugging me is that the torpedo managed to inflict severe damages to my ship while being ~1000 ft above my ship.

Here is a detailed report, it may help :
As soon as my sub heard the dipping sonar contact, I steered him (her for subs ?) away. Then the terrible torpedo-incoming message popped, which prompted me to pull the panic button : full flank, full dive to increase my evasion chances. The torpedo (later ID as a Stingray mk 0) fell for decoys twice (!) then missed the target (!!) and failed to reattack (!!!). I kept flanking and diving.

The ASW helo then launched a second torpedo, which hit my sub a few seconds later with its 80% to-hit-proba. My ship was around 2000 ft deep while the torpedo was between 900 and 1100ft deep. Log mentions "torpedo impacted ship". Well, that's a damn impact indeed :D

Damages includes most magazines and torpedo tubes (it has no firepower anymore), some sensors, most comms suite and amount to 47.5% of all ship's systems.

I'm not an expert of sub warfare by any stretch of the imagination, but it still seems odd to me that the deflagration may inflict such damages from 1000ft/300 meters away, or even that the proximity fuse of the torpedo triggered at such distance. I don't mind loosing that sub considering the Mission:Impossible situation I'm in, and it's an ok tradeoff for 5 NATO ships sunk, but it's puzzling nonetheless.

What do you think ?
Working as designed (I'll take any documentation on this fascinating topic) ? Buggy ? Somewhere in between ?

Best regards,
Rh.

EDIT : added a save occuring just before the hit, zoomed in the action.

Hi Rhysaxiel

I just gave your save a try in the editor, and if you watch the engagement in gods-eye mode, you can see the torpedo dive towards your sub and impacting it at the correct depth.
If you play in normal mode you will not see the torpedo diving because your sub will not be able to get an accurate fix on the torpedo. This is because the sonar performance is severely degraded at high speed.
Therefore the reported depth of the torpedo will be the last known.

Hope this helped.

Søren

Thank you for your reply and your advice, but I seem to have different outcomes than yours : using God's Eye View (that's damn useful !) I reproduced the impact several times, and there is consistently a 800ft gap between torp and sub. Torp impacts at 1107ft.

I see the same thing happen at times with Air-to-Air missiles. I think that if the weapon merges with the target in x and y coordinates and is capable of engaging at z altitude the game just fudges out any intervening vertical distance and resolves the attack.

Re-ran OP's save three times. First run the Stingray missed the sub, re-attacked while diving and impacted the sub when the torp was <300ft above the sub. At a depth of over 2200 feet this seems plausible.

The other two runs, the torp "impacted" the sub ~1000 above the sub. One time it severely damaged the sub, the other time it destroyed it.

Primarchx could be right about there be a built in fudge factor, but a 1000ft altitude delta for an "impact" (at least for a non-nuke) seems much. At the very least the warhead's max damage should be severely penalized for such a large altitude difference...
