SINGAPORE

The jewel of the Empire is safe. The airfields have reached level 9, the forts are at level 6, there is 210k+ supply at base and more landing, with nearly 35k fuel and a garrison of now experienced troops 1,600+ AV strong.

The big units are now prepping for other destinations. A crossing of the causeway again is extremely unlikely, and would result in massive casualties for troops bold enough to try.

Johore Baru is being bombarded daily by the RN and USN, and the shipyards are full, repairing and refitting the many subs and surface ships based here.

There are now 400+ fighters in base, with about 80 4E HB, 100 2E MB, and about 120 1E DB and TB. A few US and British recon units now provide lots of local info, and one LR recon unit is operable with another two on the way from the states through Cape Town. Patrol and search is plentiful and more Kingfishers are on the way.

This is new territory for me here. The priority is keeping the LOC between Palembang and Singers secure, and I've built Sinkep and Muntok to help in that. Several good ASW groups now fly there and are getting some reported hits on IJN subs. Since the Isis battered and sank 2-3 IJN DDs in a solo defence of Palembang port, no IJN surface vessels have ventured this way.

June 10, 1942

An interesting turn. The 4Es pound virtually empty Kuching and Singkawang fields. A lot of hits, only two lost on the day, but they couldn't take out the pesky Oscars in the sky or on the ground. Odd that there is no fighter cover here at all right now. I keep getting the sense something is up but can't suss it out yet.

At Temuloh the IJA tries a quick DA. Our cavalry recce unit not only held it's own, but was untouched by the attack while disabling 11 infantry squads. Other units are racing in. The hope is to attack before major reinforcements arrive.

The Drum again finds the KB, but can't break the escort screen. The KB moves down toward Borneo. What is it doing there?

I sent some RN CLs in to try and hit ASW TFs near Mersing, but it whiffed and then sat out there for some odd reason, in spite of retreat orders. Dates arrived unescorted, but my LR CAP was a bit too high, and they scooted under to drop two 250kg bombs on the CLs. Only Dauntless needs some time, about a week in the shipyard. Got lucky there. I'll have to start laying LR CAP. That is the first very low strike he's made. He's preferred very high before.

Coastal Bases

All of these bases are ripe for bombardments, and the IJ air forces have for the most part abandoned them. I think Kuantan is being supported by about 75 fighters at Temuloh, so I've not yet sent in the bombers, and it does have mines as well.

I was surprised by the number of troops at Singkawang and Kuching. I like that. Keep them there isolated.

June 11, 1942

On the 11th the 4Es hit a vacant Victoria Point. I wa aiming for about 40 bombers that were here. No guns in base so this was a clean strike with lots of hits for the half loads the B-17Es carried.

The KB heads toward Kuching. No idea what is going on there. I've decided to suspend supply and troop runs from Palembang to Singers in case this is a move to interdict. The RN CVs also retire into the shadows to avoid any quick runs in.

No action at Temuloh, and the other forces should be arriving over the next two days.

Lowpe's turns have been coming faster lately. This also makes me think something is happening he thinks will be a major op. Is it China? Is it a reinforcement in the DEI? Maybe a push toward Oz to break the LOC?

Whatever it is, I'm convinced something is up. For the Allies I just have to be careful and protect everything that is moving and major bases that need cover. Luckily I've got enough to do that right now.

On the 12th the IJ jumps a few bombing runs, but only hitting about five RAF bombers. These were aiming for the naval guard that shocked into Benkalis, but with no supply and barely any combat power. Still, he might sacrifice a transport or two and pul out the rest of the unit now that it's on the coast. I should now hit the other stranded units here on Sumatra to prevent a similar situation with the elements of the 4th division that were at Djambi.

He also now knows there are CD guns at Benkalis!

I usually look at the maneuver bands for the aircraft and find the point where their performance trails off most severely, then set them just below that in altitude. But there is always a need for some very low CAP around 4K feet to make sure torpedo bombers do not get a free shot.

Yes.

For Singapore if any TB strike, they're going to suffer! There are probably 100 40mm Bofors in base in addition to the many more 12.7mm MG and 20mm Oerlikons. There are also now 3 new USA Heavy AA gun units.

Not sure, but I think the base AAA only helps protect docked or disbanded ships, not the TFs that could be anywhere in the 40 NM hex.

June 13, 1942

Aggressive sub use has it's drawbacks occasionally. Two hit mines this turn, but they should make it back to the yards.

The big news is that the IJA rails in the 38th division from Taiping. This is the last of the divisions that were not engaged in Southern Malaya, and I love that it's here now. The armoured units move into Temuloh, and he doesn't have enough to boot us out in x3 terrain. Now though, that division cannot rail out!

About 500 AV of armor and Aussie brigades are turning NW and will run toward Taiping. I've got a lot of arty up here too, and recon should reveal what's left soon. Now I need to land some more units up at Utan Melintang and quickly.

Two good bombardments on the 14th. The units in Johore Baru have to be suffering after all of this. I'll keep it up for another month or so. Then I hope to land two supported and rested divisions there. The KB is still showing itself along the coast of Borneo. What is up?

June 15, 1942

Went away to Devon over the Easter holiday. A good trip with the family. had a ride on an old steam train, went to Agatha Christie's house and estate, some good coastal walks and some great old pubs. Most of the ones we went to this trip dated from the 14th-16th century!!

The beer was fresh and tasty though, and the fires and dogs made for a cosy visit.

Something definitely began on the 15th. The Japanese air forces combined for a massive 400 bombers attack on the fields at Chungking. Remarkably, with the entire Chinese air force and some Brit and US groups on the ground, only about a dozen planes were lost. I'm confused at how the fields are still open, I was able to fly all groups out this turn, and most fighters are able to offer CAP in their new locations.

I'm guessing these were not well trained pilots. At any rate, it doesn't matter. Chinese industry is open to attack now. I've moved all of the AVG and the better Chinese groups to Kunming to hold out with the good US air support there. It's still a long distance sweep to the mountains, so maybe these groups can pop in now and again to cause some trouble. I'm guessing this coincides with the recent ground movements to Pingsiang, and I bet more will come. I think it's already to little too late for the Japanese in China though. Most Corps have filled out disabled, forts have reached high levels at key locations, and supply has been conserved for months. In addition, the northern bases are recieving some help from Russian supply and engineers. Several Chinese infantry units are filling out up there as well.

Some zero sweeps went for the AVG and they were set up high, so handled them easily with only 2 losses for about 20 A6M2.

I am guessing KB is simply covering the several valuable damaged ships in Northern Borneo so they can repair enough system points to risk moving further away from your bombers. I think there are at least two BBs there?

There have been, but somehow I show no ships in any North Borneo port now, with decent recon flying. I think he either sneaked the Mutsu and Myoko out, or they sank trying! There have been subs all over the place for a while now, but some TFs still get through undetected or unchallenged.

He's been putting damaged warships with merchants and troop ships in big TFs to move them around. It's an interesting tactic, and can cover them up a bit from search, but ultimately if they get jumped by a sub the sub will go for the BB over the xAK.

June 16, 1942

The divisions at Johore Baru can't be doing well by now. It looks like the guys making dinner and cleaning out the guns are getting hit hard right now. I have two IDs prepping to land here in about a month, and by that time these might be in bad shape if this continues. I wish I could land sooner.

In China some pea shooters take out a few Bettys aiming for Lanchow. If he's trying to hit here, that probably means he's not going for China by land. It looks like he'll just try to strangle the economy there, hitting the industry and engaging to make the Chinese run short.

Some Sallys get to Kunming bofore the AVG could make it, and get a bit taken off of the HI. A few I-15s that did make it there knock some down though too, surprisingly.

Units begin to approach Taiping on Malaya. Temuloh is locked up with equal numbers on both sides, as is Kluong, but there is a chance the armor can make a difference at Taiping. I'll give it a shot anyway.

The KB is now set up at Miri. It appears no other fighters are there though, which is curious. Hmmm.

Hmmm - no troops showing at Pontianak, Singkawang or the base to the east of that. Could be ceding NW Borneo to you and moving all his troops to Miri and Brunei to hold those as long as possible? Or maybe you just haven't reconned those three bases in a while?

Your ships bombarding Johore Bahru seem to be doing very well for CAs and CLs. Is all that bombarding increasing their experience level significantly? Someone on the forum said that bombardment doesn't to much for experience.

He does have troops there. Quite a few at last recon. More than I would have expected. I posted a map a while back with numbers I think.

Kuching is over 10k if I remember correctly, while Singkawang was about 8k. Significant in that I can't get them easily, but he has a lot of troops potentially out on a limb. The nearby dot bases are being invested now, and will grow.

I'll check. I'm not running tracker, so I'll have to do a screenshot and keep it for later to check changes. I do know the ships that have survived the bloodbaths of the DEI in the early months are very high in EXP. There are many with 65+ night skill, which is fantastic for the Allies at this stage.

June 17, 1942

The Japanese had built Luong to level 2 fields, and they have been periodically posting fighters here for LR CAP, so I've finally decided to deal with it. I sent the works in today, and got some decent hits, but not as much as I'd like due to severe storms. I'll revisit again later. Two hexes from Singers it should be easy to manage.

The Allies grab a dot base near Borneo today. This should begin small commando operation to continue seizing little unoccupied bases at a rate the Japanese cannot keep up with, starting here and moving toward the PI.

Most Gatos only inserted small groups, 1-5 people plus supplies. It would be a tight fit to put a platoon of marines, with all their gear, on a Gato rigged for patrol

It might be the USS Silversides Museum in Muskegon, MI. The sign over the engine on the left is the same sign over the same engine in a picture I have from visiting the USS Silversides several years ago.

Early war in the Solomons the coast watchers and often many civilians were loaded on subs to be rescued. Sometimes 20-30 at a time. May have been tight, but the journeys were not long, and it meant life or death, so they piled them in as tightly as possible.

Even if you could only get one or two squads per sub on, that would take a dot base, so it would work.

June 18-19, 1942

Not much action on the 18th, but on the 19th Miri is hit for the first time. This strike takes about 60+ points off of the oil. A very good hit. No fighters there to contest. There are about 400 on Malaya flying CAP and (most likely) escort. With the 4Es it doesn't take much of a gap in coverage to make a big impact.

Interesting that although the KB went dark from search, it is still at Miri, and it's CAP was reported as not being able to get to the strikes.

That makes me wonder. Is there CAP up? Is it LR CAPing something? Odd. message if the KB is in hex since the strikes were very reachable at 8k.

The IJAAF takes a few HI points from Chungking. This will be a slow bleed and not much I can do except for an occasional run in with CAP.

A sub gets a nice fat AKE near the PI.

Yes!! Another decent hit on Zuikaku! This one has listing/counter flooding and engine damage messages. That should mean some good damage and slowed speed.

I also got lucky on Luzon, where a P-400 group jumps some Sallys and a few Anns the one turn he doesn't have Nicks flying sweeps or escort.
