I always felt that the people who cling to the theory that Hitler escaped to South America to be closeted wishful
thinking.

U571 had 2-3 ok ship - sub battle scenes IIRC


BTW: I think the film / series of Das Boot was in fact better then the book. Except the book had more details on sub to ship and ship to sub combat. As the "reporter" character in the book is displayed as one who also served on an asw ship in the baltics before assigned to the boat..

Status: offline 		OT but speaking of German productions.... I just finished watching the German mini-series "Babylon Berlin". It is set in 1929 Weimar; for those of us interested in the tumultuous politics of that time it is very well done. It has a very dark Germanic side to it. A lot of money was spent on costumes set etc. The "failing" NY Times highly rated the production. Another darkish German movie set in late 1945 that I watched recently was worthwhile: This Land of Mine

Status: offline 		The Buchheim book was supposed to be better/more detailed than the movie as it was too much material to fit into limited length of a movie.
The 3-part TV series is actually far superior to the movie as it provides lots of details/background/ambiente.
Will be hard to top with anything new.

It's great. The "German with English subtitles" is more informative and precise in meaning than the "In English" option.

Crimson Tide was abhorrent as both a story and a piece of moviemaking. It was also dangerous in that it indicated to the public that such a thing could happen.

Status: offline 		The "new" 2014 (german) Blu-Ray version of "Das Boot" is pretty good. It's split into 6 parts of 52 minutes again (like the TV-Version) and contains flashback(?) and preview at start of each episode. It's also some kind of "remastered", nothing too great but still pretty good. :)
Not sure about the US market version.

Not sure about the US market version.

Europe had a different standard for TV displays than the Americas. I am not sure if the standards have been brought together once digital broadcast became the norm or if there is a difference still. That might affect compatibility of DVDs.
