I doubt its quality will be even close to the original but I also doubt it will turn into dumbshit like U-571

Except the book had more details on sub to ship and ship to sub combat. As the "reporter" character in the book is displayed as one who also served on an asw ship in the baltics before assigned to the boat..

OT but speaking of German productions.... I just finished watching the German mini-series "Babylon Berlin". It is set in 1929 Weimar; for those of us interested in the tumultuous politics of that time it is very well done. It has a very dark Germanic side to it. A lot of money was spent on costumes set etc. The "failing" NY Times highly rated the production. Another darkish German movie set in late 1945 that I watched recently was worthwhile: This Land of Mine

The Buchheim book was supposed to be better/more detailed than the movie as it was too much material to fit into limited length of a movie. The 3-part TV series is actually far superior to the movie as it provides lots of details/background/ambiente. Will be hard to top with anything new.

The original was a 5 hour mini-series. You can get a 209 minute version on Amazon.

Nope it was good filmmaking as well most good actors just like Red October...if you looked for realism in these 2 then perhaps not so much

I am thinking of ordering the blue ray version. But some blue ray transfers are pretty sucky. Does anyone own the blue ray and find it to be of good quality.

The "new" 2014 (german) Blu-Ray version of "Das Boot" is pretty good. It's split into 6 parts of 52 minutes again (like the TV-Version) and contains flashback(?) and preview at start of each episode. It's also some kind of "remastered", nothing too great but still pretty good. :) Not sure about the US market version.

I am not sure if the standards have been brought together once digital broadcast became the norm or if there is a difference still. That might affect compatibility of DVDs.

I think that there already was remake . . . Das Booty. It may have veered from the original somewhat.
