Most usually the sequals are far far worse than the originals... and the original "Das Boot" (especially the German series = 6 hours long) was as good as it could be... [8D]

They can use the Wilhelm Bauer in this series, and round it up in 1945 with an escape to South America. Maybe with
some shady persons onboard....[8|]

The first series was more than good, you are right...and the base and model for the Silent Hunter Simulator.

I always felt that the people who cling to the theory that Hitler escaped to South America to be closeted wishful
thinking.
Just a little bit creepy [:D]

Denniss -> RE: Semi OT: New "Das Boot"? (4/19/2018 9:36:02 AM)

I doubt its quality will be even close to the original but I also doubt it will turn into dumbshit like U-571

U571 had 2-3 ok ship - sub battle scenes IIRC

BTW: I think the film / series of Das Boot was in fact better then the book. Except the book had more details on sub to ship and ship to sub combat. As the "reporter" character in the book is displayed as one who also served on an asw ship in the baltics before assigned to the boat..

pontiouspilot -> RE: Semi OT: New "Das Boot"? (4/19/2018 3:22:04 PM)

OT but speaking of German productions.... I just finished watching the German mini-series "Babylon Berlin". It is set in 1929 Weimar; for those of us interested in the tumultuous politics of that time it is very well done. It has a very dark Germanic side to it. A lot of money was spent on costumes set etc. The "failing" NY Times highly rated the production. Another darkish German movie set in late 1945 that I watched recently was worthwhile: This Land of Mine

crsutton -> RE: Semi OT: New "Das Boot"? (4/19/2018 5:30:18 PM)

Gonna be hard to top the original.

BillBrown -> RE: Semi OT: New "Das Boot"? (4/19/2018 5:40:48 PM)

A reboot of Das Boot? [8D]

Yes, I think Microsoft Tech Support is responsible.

Denniss -> RE: Semi OT: New "Das Boot"? (4/19/2018 5:47:45 PM)

The Buchheim book was supposed to be better/more detailed than the movie as it was too much material to fit into limited length of a movie.
The 3-part TV series is actually far superior to the movie as it provides lots of details/background/ambiente.
Will be hard to top with anything new.

adarbrauner -> RE: Semi OT: New "Das Boot"? (4/19/2018 8:06:29 PM)

Gosh I was a child...but still that movie made such a great impression, and the accompanying music is unforgettable.

Who'd like to see it again with me (in original German is completely a different experience) ?

I re-watch it every year (it is the very 1st DVD I ever bought)... I watch it in original German language (and with English subtitles)... [:)]

The original was a 5 hour mini-series. You can get a 209 minute version on Amazon.

BillBrown -> RE: Semi OT: New "Das Boot"? (4/19/2018 10:03:16 PM)

whatever.

Denniss -> RE: Semi OT: New "Das Boot"? (4/19/2018 10:26:19 PM)

BBC was not involved with the minisieries other than to broadcast it first.
I still shudder when the intro/title music starts playing

MakeeLearn -> RE: Semi OT: New "Das Boot"? (4/19/2018 11:37:26 PM)

It's great. The "German with English subtitles" is more informative and precise in meaning than the "In English" option.

Alpha77 -> RE: Semi OT: New "Das Boot"? (4/20/2018 10:05:33 AM)

Here is the original 90ties Tekkno version (there is also a longer remix):

Crimson Tide was abhorrent as both a story and a piece of moviemaking. It was also dangerous in that it indicated to the public that such a thing could happen.

Alpha77 -> RE: Semi OT: New "Das Boot"? (4/20/2018 11:10:04 AM)

Nope it was good filmmaking as well most good actors just like Red October...if you looked for realism in these 2 then perhaps not so much

LeeChard -> RE: Semi OT: New "Das Boot"? (4/20/2018 11:50:33 AM)

I liked 'Red October'. 'Crimson Tide' not so much.

crsutton -> RE: Semi OT: New "Das Boot"? (4/20/2018 2:33:41 PM)

I am thinking of ordering the blue ray version. But some blue ray transfers are pretty sucky. Does anyone own the blue ray and find it to be of good quality.

Banzan -> RE: Semi OT: New "Das Boot"? (4/20/2018 4:46:13 PM)

The "new" 2014 (german) Blu-Ray version of "Das Boot" is pretty good. It's split into 6 parts of 52 minutes again (like the TV-Version) and contains flashback(?) and preview at start of each episode. It's also some kind of "remastered", nothing too great but still pretty good. :)
Not sure about the US market version.

Europe had a different standard for TV displays than the Americas. I am not sure if the standards have been brought together once digital broadcast became the norm or if there is a difference still. That might affect compatibility of DVDs.

anarchyintheuk -> RE: Semi OT: New "Das Boot"? (4/20/2018 5:38:10 PM)

I think that there already was remake . . . Das Booty. It may have veered from the original somewhat.
