Also another good movie was Crimson Tide "Capt I relieve you from the command of this ship":

Indeed so - some great acting, fine music and a great piece of cinema

Having been on such a boat for many years, the Hunt for Red October was a great movie, Crimson Tide was not.
Red October tried to be realistic and accurate. Tom Clancy was known for that. Crimson Tide - I am not sure - perhaps it wanted to be just an action filled adventure. Perhaps I was expecting more from such a wonderful cast in Crimson Tide. I loved Bat 21.

It's worth a penetrating analysis for sure!

Hi all,

The "new" 2014 (german) Blu-Ray version of "Das Boot" is pretty good. It's split into 6 parts of 52 minutes again (like the TV-Version) and contains flashback(?) and preview at start of each episode. It's also some kind of "remastered", nothing too great but still pretty good. :)
Not sure about the US market version.

Europe had a different standard for TV displays than the Americas. I am not sure if the standards have been brought together once digital broadcast became the norm or if there is a difference still. That might affect compatibility of DVDs.

It is BluRay - not DVD... [8D]

Crimson Tide was abhorrent as both a story and a piece of moviemaking. It was also dangerous in that it indicated to the public that such a thing could happen.

Thanks to this post I saw Crimson Tide for the first time in these last days; cannot say about the movie, which is interesting still at least, but the interpretation of Gene Hackman is masterful and impressive; Denzel Washington good too;

In any case I find that Das Boot holds good cards to concur for best war movie, ever;

The Enemy Below
worth watching. a bit more hollywood and a bit less historic but good actors and an interesting plot

So is "Journey's end",

CaptBeefheart -> RE: Semi OT: New "Das Boot"? (4/23/2018 3:29:33 AM)

So, they are going to remake one of the best movies ever. What's next, a re-boot of "Gone With the Wind?"

Cheers,
CC

No they are not re-making it - its a new series about a later period in the war.

Maybe it will be realistic, but I doubt that they will be put through the rigors endured by the cast of the first. It may have a "off the shelf" feel.

The book Iron Coffins - Herbert Werner, would have have been a good script provider.

adarbrauner -> RE: Semi OT: New "Das Boot"? (4/23/2018 4:07:18 PM)

Point is that at the time it was shoot, German submariners were still well around, and the actors and producers actually being their sons or the sons generation of Germans of the war...with all the human and soul burden, so deep and present in Germany after the war. That's why that movie was so special and accurate. The production went really out of their way to reproduce everything in the most accurate way, they, as well as the cast, probably felt a moral obligation to themselves and the world to exactly reproduce the inheritance they've been relinquished by their fathers as it was, , not even Spielberg could have done better, even if he wanted to in this .
